Edward Otis Wathen
25 January 1999

Edward Otis Wathen, 99, formerly of St. Joseph, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at Leisure Years Nursing Home in Owensboro. He was born in Daviess County, was a retired farmer and was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Joe Wathen, in 1957; and two sons, Joseph Otis Wathen Jr. in 1995 and Doug Wathen in 1971.

Survivors include a son, James Wathen of Owensboro; two daughters, Mary Lois Matheny of Owensboro and Hazel Miller of St. Joseph; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Herman Wathen and Marvin Wathen, both of Owensboro; and a sister, Rose Weikel of Owensboro.

Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen Cathedral. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus cemetery in St. Joseph. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gilbert L. Pharris
24 January 1999

ROSINE - Gilbert L. Pharris, 62, of Rosine died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Ohio County Hospital in Hartford. He was born in Ohio County, was employed in logging and was a member of Rosine Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Della Johnson of Livermore; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 3 p.m. Monday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery in Butler County. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Lizzie McCulley Dossett
28 January 1999

SACRAMENTO - Lizzie McCulley Dossett, 89, of Claremore, Okla., formerly of Sacramento, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at Claremore Nursing Home. She was born in Muhlenberg County and was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Loyd "Buddy" Dossett of Claremore; a daughter, Jerry Bowles of Littleton, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento. Burial will be in Briar Creek cemetery in Bremen. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Marshall Wilson
23 April 1999

Elizabeth Marshall Wilson, 91, formerly of Owensboro and Gulfport, Miss., died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at the home of a daughter in Fairfax, Va. She was born in Frankfort. She was a graduate of Hamilton College, Lexington, has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Brescia College and master's of arts degree in speech and audiology from Bill Wilkerson Speech and Hearing Institute, Peabody College, Vanderbilt University, Nashville. She was a certified audiologist and was the speech and hearing clinician for the Harrison County (Miss.) School district for 30 years. She had been a member of First Presbyterian Church in Owensboro, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gulfport, the American Speech and Hearing Association, and the Gulf Coast Scottish Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Russell Wilson, in 1990.

Survivors include three daughters, Ann Whittinghill of Owensboro; Jane Campbell of Fairfax; Virginia Scully of Gulfport; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Thomas Milton Marshall of Louisville.

There will be a memorial service at a later date. Graveside services are today in Arlington, Va.

Mary Hazel Ross
25 January 1999

Mary Hazel Ross, 89, of Owensboro, formerly of Drakesboro, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at Leisure Years Nursing Home in Owensboro. She was born in Muhlenberg County and was a member of Adairville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Charles Ross of Owensboro; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Charles Noffsinger of Forsyth, Mo.; and a sister, Eva Huehls of Louisville.

Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Central City. Visitation is after 3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Kathleen Bates Nonweiler
25 January 1999

Kathleen Bates Nonweiler, 88, of Owensboro died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. She was born in Vanderburgh County, Ind., and was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church in Owensboro, Young Women's Club and Order of the Eastern Star in Boonville, Ind. Her husband, Edwin Arthur Nonweiler, died June 15, 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Edwin Nonweiler and Donald Ray Nonweiler, both of Owensboro; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services are at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Boonville. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Settle Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund, 201 E. Fourth St., Owensboro, KY 42303. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Joseph Allen Alexander
25 January 1999

HARDINSBURG - Joseph Allen Alexander, 65, of Westview died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at his home. He was born in Breckinridge County and was of the Catholic faith. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and retired from the Louisville Police Department after 22 years.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin Alexander of Louisville and Carl Alexander of Jeffersontown; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Richard Alexander of Owensboro, Paul Alexander of Hardinsburg, Harold Alexander of Pleasure Ridge Park and James Michael Alexander of Westview; and a sister, Elizabeth McMahan of Shepherdsville.

Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Romuald Catholic Church in Hardinsburg. Burial will be in St. Romuald cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Tuesday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Prayers will be said at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gwynne Ruth Ashby
10 July 1999

MADISONVILLE -- Gwynne Ruth Ashby, 56, of Madisonville died Friday, July 9, 1999, at the Senior Citizens Nursing Home in Madisonville. She was born in Nashville. She retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in 1992 and was a member of the local Rubber Workers Union.

Survivors include her husband, James Ronald Ashby; two sons, Landon Hughes and Mark Hughes, both of Madisonville; three daughters, Belinda Houck of Madisonville, Patalyn Thompson of Tucson Ariz., and Kimberley Ashby of Owensboro; six grandchildren; a brother, Russell Sage of Forest Park, Ohio; and several nephews and nieces.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at the New Salem cemetery in Nortonville. There will be no visitation. Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville is in charge of the arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Senior Citizens Nursing Home Activities Fund, Pride Avenue, Madisonville, KY 42431.

William Hazel Benningfield
15 July 1999

William Hazel Benningfield, 52, of 5404 Sturgeon Avenue, Owensboro, died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at his home. He was born in Daviess County.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Benningfield and Joey Benningfield, both of Owensboro, and David Benningfield of Buffalo, N.Y.; and four brothers, Jerry Benningfield of Panther, Don Benningfield of Big Sandy, Texas, Jim Benningfield and Bob Benningfield, both of Owensboro.

Services are at 7 p.m. today at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ruby M. Holder
23 February 1999

Ruby M. Holder, 84, of 3010 Calhoun Road, Owensboro, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. She was born in Daviess County, retired from General Electric Co. and was a member of First Baptist Church in Owensboro. She enjoyed gardening and animals. Her husband, Harry Cooper Holder, died in 1989.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Holder of Greers Ferry, Ark., and Larry Holder of Frankfort; two grandchildren; and a sister, Marjorie Horn of Owensboro.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 230 J.R. Miller Blvd., Owensboro, KY 42303. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Leoda Carver Baker
26 January 1999

HOPKINSVILLE - Leoda Carver Baker, 88, of Hopkinsville died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville after a lengthy illness. She was born in Muhlenberg County and was a member of First Baptist Church in Hopkinsville. Her husband, Joseph W. Baker Sr., died in 1974.

Survivors include a son, Joseph W. Baker Jr. of Greenville; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Richard Ree Anthis
26 January 1999

Richard Ree Anthis, 67, of Owensboro died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at his home. He was born in Hazleton, Ind., and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church ELCA in Owensboro. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and retired from Powell County School District, where he was a principal and a teacher. He enjoyed history, including the Roman Empire and the Civil War. His wife, Willie B. Anthis, died in 1998.

Services are at 1 p.m. today at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is after 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.
