George M. 'Buster' Amos
28 September 1999

CENTRAL CITY -- George M. "Buster" Amos, 78, of Central City died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. He was born in Ohio County and retired as a welder from P&M Coal Mining Co. after 40 years of service. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving under Gen. Patton and receiving two Bronze Campaign Stars, a European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, an American Theater Ribbon, a Victory Ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of Cherry Hill Missionary Baptist Church for 40 years, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a Mason and a former member of the Central City Saddle Club. He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Margaret Miller Amos; three daughters, Anita Stirsman and Sandra Day, both of Central City, and Doris M. Sumner of Owensboro; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Central City. Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Martha Cooper Morford
28 September 1999

Martha Cooper Morford, 97, formerly of Owensboro and Hancock County, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at Millers Merry Manor in Mooresville, Ind. She was born in Hancock County, retired from General Electric and was a member of Wing Avenue Baptist Church. Her husband, Vernie F. Morford, died Jan. 13, 1967.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Morris Hatfield of Owensboro and Louise Morrison of Mooresville, Ind.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six great-stepgrandchildren; and a brother, Gilbert Cooper of Owensboro.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Lewisport cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Linda Ann Smith
28 September 1999

Linda Ann Smith, 59, of 3637 Bordeaux Loop North, Owensboro, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. She was born in Gloversville, N.Y., was a homemaker and member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church in Owensboro.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Richard Smith; two sons, S. Harry Smith and Neil Smith, both of Covington; a daughter, Julie Westerfield of Owensboro; two grandchildren; her mother, Vera Welch of St. Johnsville, N.Y.; a brother, Darrell Welch of Albany, N.Y.; and a sister, Mary Jane Schwebel of Palos Verdes, Calif.

Services are at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Burial will be in St. Johnsville, N.Y., at a later date. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Lupus Foundation of Kentucky and Indiana, 1850 Bluegrass Ave., Louisville, KY 40215-1199. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

John Daley 'J.D.' Farmer
29 September 1999

BREMEN -- John Daley "J.D." Farmer, 78, of Bremen died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Maple Manor in Greenville. He was born in Fordsville, was a retired oil field trucker and member of Eaton Memorial Baptist Church in Owensboro.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Farmer; two stepdaughters, Sandra Estes of Owensboro and Rebecca Phillips of Bremen; seven stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; and an aunt.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Harl-Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville. Burial will be in Friendship Church of Christ cemetery in Ohio County. Visitation is after 2 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Leona S. Hogan
29 September 1999

BEAVER DAM -- Leona S. Hogan, 83, of Beaver Dam died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Homestead Nursing Center in New Castle. She was born in Chicago and was a homemaker. She was a member of Hemet Baptist Church in Hemet, Calif., and Order of the Eastern Star in Hemet. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas B. Hogan.

Survivors include a nephew.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will be in Sunnyside cemetery in Beaver Dam. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Maude Starks Deason
30 September 1999

Maude Starks Deason, 93, of 3205 Lewis Lane, Owensboro, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. She was born in Marshall County and retired in 1972 as a teacher for the Owensboro Board of Education after 33 years of service. She was a member of Southside Church of Christ and the Retired Teachers Association. She received her bachelor's degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College and enjoyed gardening and cross-stitching. Her husband, James N. Deason, died on June 30, 1994.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Parks of Smyrna, Tenn., and Dot Vargason of Owensboro; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruby Russell of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Services are at 3:30 p.m. Friday at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the donor's preferred charity.

James P. Mills
30 September 1999

JELLICO, Tenn. -- James P. Mills, 81, of Jellico, Tenn., formerly of Owensboro, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, in Jellico. He was born in Owensboro and retired from Owensboro City Schools as a maintenance man and bus driver after 15 years of service. He was an Army veteran serving in the Medical Corps in Alaska. He was a lifetime member of D.A.V. and was a member of Peoples Baptist Church and Oddfellows Lodge. He enjoyed writing poetry, short stories, woodworking and making "caned" chairs.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Ruth Williams Mills; four sons, Dennis Mills of Berea, Phillip Mills of Whitesville, James C. Mills and Ralph Mills, both of Owensboro; two daughters, Vada Short of Owensboro and Lillie Angelin Backues of Jefferson City, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Pagan of Owensboro.

Services are at 3 p.m. Friday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pendleton Gardner
10 October 1999

LEWISBURG -- Pendleton Douglas "Doug" Gardner, 52, of Lewisburg died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Gardner Farm in Butler County. He was born in Greenville and was a farmer. He was a member of Morgantown Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Holly T. Gardner; a son, Chris Gardner of Elizabethtown; a daughter, Olivia Francine Gardner of Lewisburg; his parents, Pendleton Joseph and Maxine Gardner of Quality; his maternal grandmother, Marie Cook of Louisville; a brother, Dwight C. Gardner of Morgantown; and a sister, Maxine Jo Milley of Pelham, Ala.

Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Price Funeral Home Inc. in Lewisburg. Burial will be in the Gardner Family cemetery in Butler County. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Olivia Francine Gardner Scholarship Fund, c/o Morgantown Bank and Trust Co., P.O. Box 68, Morgantown, KY 42261-0068. Carroll J. Shrewsberry
12 October 1999

WHITESVILLE -- Carroll J. Shrewsberry, 58, of Whitesville died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at his home. He was born in Breckinridge County and retired from Big Rivers Electric Corp. He was a member of St. Mary's of the Woods Catholic Church in Whitesville, was a Kentucky Colonel and enjoyed restoring old cars, playing music, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Howard Shrewsberry; two sons, Brad Shrewsberry and Bob Shrewsberry, both of Owensboro; a daughter, "Dee Dee" McGehee of Owensboro; his mother, Erma Shrewsberry of Philpot; four stepchildren; nine grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren.

Services are at noon Wednesday at St. Mary's of the Woods Catholic Church. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice Association. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Tranny Stout
12 October 1999

HARTFORD -- Traino Etreak "Tranny" Stout, 45, of Hartford died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at his home. He was born in Owensboro, attended No Creek United Methodist Church, was formerly employed at Hartford Standard Corp. and also farmed.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jean Baird Stout; a daughter, Miranda Mae Stout at home; his mother, Bridget Marie Richards Stout of Fordsville; and a brother, Barry Stout of Boling Chapel.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery in Hartford. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice Association of Ohio County, 1211 Main St., Hartford, KY 42347. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Joseph K. Long
10 October 1999

GREENVILLE -- Joseph K. Long, 62, of Greenville died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. He was born in Greenville and was a professor of anthropology and an advocate of tolerance, social justice and the environment. He enjoyed the arts.

Survivors include his son, David Long of Madison, Wis.; and a grandchild.

A Unitarian memorial service will be held in three to six months in Greenville. Crawford's Mortuary and Crematorium in Nashville are in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the charity of the donor's choice.

Trudy Young Boling
11 October 1999

HAWESVILLE -- Trudy Young Boling, 88, of Hawesville died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. She was born in Daviess County and was a member of the Hawesville Baptist Church. She retired from the Hancock County School System where she taught for 38 years at Hawesville Elementary and Hancock County Middle School. She attended Western Kentucky Teachers College and graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College. She was an active member of Hawesville Senior Citizens and a past member of Eastern Star Chapter No. 480. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Boling Sr. in 1978; and a daughter, Jane Boling-Hamilton in 1994.

Survivors include a son, John M. Boling of Elizabethtown; a daughter, Mary Ann Shelton of Owensboro; and three grandchildren.

Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hawesville Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cloverport cemetery. Visitation is after 2 p.m. Tuesday and until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gibson and Son Funeral Home in Hawesville. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hawesville Baptist Church Building Fund.
