HARDINSBURG -- James "J.J." Clark, 50, of Hardinsburg died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Breckinridge Memorial Hospital. The Hancock County native was a self-employed mechanic and member of St. Romuald Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Clark of Cloverport; two sons, James Allen Clark of Morgantown and Kenny Clark of Hardinsburg; a daughter, Jamie Clark of Cloverport; three grandchildren; and a brother, Thomas Eugene Clark of Denver.

Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Romuald Catholic Church in Hardinsburg. Burial will be in St. Romuald cemetery in Hardinsburg. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg.

Ida Christine Wheeler

Ida Christine Wheeler, 85, of 3321 Allen St., Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at her home. The Daviess County native retired from the cafeteria at Brescia College and was a Baptist. Her husband, Hardwick Wheeler, died Jan. 11, 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Rodney Wayne Wheeler and Clifton J. "Sonny" Wheeler, both of Owensboro; two daughters, Mary Helen Fritton of Santa Claus, Ind., and Betty Lou Skinner of Yuba City, Calif.; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services are at 10 a.m. Monday at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Brushy Fork cemetery in Daviess County. Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Walter Matthews

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Walter John Matthews, 72, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Owensboro, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Missouri Veterans Home. The Griffith, Ind., native had been a salesman at General Sign Co. and Shivelbine's Music Store, a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and served in the Air Force from September 1947 to September 1951, where he earned the rank of staff sergeant.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Elizabeth Jane Lang Matthews; four sons, Walter Lee Matthews of Jackson, Mo., Mark Mathews and J.B. Matthews, both of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and David Matthews of Owensboro; a daughter, Melody Hamilton of Petersburg, Ind.; a stepson, Hugo Lang of Paducah; a stepdaughter, Rebecca Walls of St. Louis; eight grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; three brothers, Don Mathews of Henderson and Mike Mathews and Pat Mathews, both of Owensboro; and two sisters, Wanda Anderson and Lois Weideman, both of Owensboro.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ford and Sons Funeral Home, Mount Auburn chapel. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Magdalene Stewart

HARTFORD -- Mary Magdalene Stewart, 78, of Hartford died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Ohio County Hospital. The Ohio County native was a homemaker and member of New Hope Pentecostal Church in Fordsville. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Hobart Bratcher in 1966, Stoy B. Daugherty in 1972, Amos Daugherty in 1974 and Adrion Stewart in 1999; a son, Orbin Bratcher in 1973; and a daughter, Mae Basham in 1984.

Survivors include her son, William H. Bratcher of Beaver Dam; three daughters, Mildred Bratcher of Hartford and Judy Geary and Cova A. "Vinnie" Stewart, both of Horse Branch; two stepsons, Milford Bratcher of Beaver Dam and Clifton Bratcher of Frankfort; several other stepchildren; 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a half sister, Ruby D. Knudson of Tennessee; a stepbrother, Lafe Neighbors of Arkansas; and two stepsisters, Virginia Coons and Agnes Richert, both of Owensboro.

Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home. Burial will be in Leach cemetery in Ohio County. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Mary M. Stewart Memorial Fund, c/o Cova Stewart, 243 Church Lane, Horse Branch, KY 42349.

Dorothy Elizabeth Kerrick

GLENDALE, Calif. -- Dorothy Elizabeth Kerrick, 91, of Glendale, formerly of Owensboro, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Alexandria Care Center in Hollywood, Calif. The Aurora, Ill., native was a member of First Baptist Church in Hammond, Ind., and attended Harvest Baptist Temple in Owensboro. Her husband, Ernest Clayton Kerrick, died Feb. 28, 1981.

Survivors include a son, Donald Wayne Kerrick of Bloomington, Ind.; two daughters, Linda Clayton Kerrick Lawson of Hammond, Ind., and Marjorie Kerrick Proctor of Glendale, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Friday at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after noon Friday at the funeral home.

Willa T. Furgason Wadleigh
1 June 2001

Willa T. Furgason Wadleigh, 87, of 17-A Quail Ridge Court, Owensboro, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Wellington Parc. The Keokuk, Iowa, native was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and had trained B-17 bomber crews in aircraft mechanics during World War II. She was a research chemist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., where nuclear weapons were designed. Her husband, Leonard A. Wadleigh, died March 1989.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Thomas Greene Furgason III; and two grandchildren.

Private services will be held at Christ Chapel in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Entombment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Settle Memorial United Methodist Church.

Clarenton Dee Lucas

HUDSON -- Clarenton Dee Lucas, 63, of Hudson died there Sunday, May 20, 2001. The Breckinridge County native was a farmer. He was preceded in death by a son, Kelly Lucas.

Survivors include a son, Winfred Lucas of Constantine; a daughter, Clarissa Allen of Locust Hill; and seven grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial will be in Madrid cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Athena Gale Boyken

LIVERMORE -- Athena Gale Boyken, 45, of Kodak, Tenn., formerly of McLean County, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the Sevier County Medical Center in Sevierville, Tenn. The Daviess County native was a homemaker and a dog breeder.

Survivors include her husband, Henry "Hank" Wilson; a son, Jason Ray Thorp of Dallas; a stepson, Dale Wayne Wilson of Sevierville; a stepdaughter, Jackie Jean Geary of Holland, Mich.; her father, Jesse Ray Boyken of Zeeland, Mich.; her mother and stepfather, Louise and Warren Hall of Holland; two grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; a brother, Allen Ray Boyken of Dallas; a stepbrother, Mark Hall of Saugatuck, Mich.; and two stepsisters, Robin Bell and Kris Vandenyacth, both of Saugatuck.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel. Burial will be in the Island Community cemetery in McLean County. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Saturday and after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Island Community cemetery Fund, c/o J.D. Hardison, P.O. Jerry Eugene 'Hawk' Lewis

MORTONS GAP -- Jerry Eugene "Hawk" Lewis, 53, of Mortons Gap died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. The Owensboro native worked at Davco Rest Home and Mr. Tuxedo and was a deacon, chairman of the board of deacons and financial officer at Holy Temple Church of God in Christ in Madisonville. He was a former member of Center Street Baptist Church and a former Pop Warner football coach.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Sharber Day Lewis; three daughters, Anita Johnson of Owensboro, Heather Owens of Lexington and LaQuita Swaney of Mortons Gap; five grandchildren; and three brothers, John Michael Lewis and Lee Evans Johnson, both of Owensboro, and the Rev. James L. Hughes of Clanton, Ala.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Temple Church of God in Christ in Madisonville. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorial services are at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. McFarland Funeral Home in Owensboro is handling arrangements.

Harold C. 'Uncle' Stewart

BEECH GROVE -- Harold C. "Uncle" Stewart, 80, of Beech Grove died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Colonial Terrace Nursing Home in Sebree. The McLean County native was a retired farmer, a Baptist, an Army veteran of World War II and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his sister, Cova Tapp of Sebree; four half brothers, Edward Earl Stewart, Charles Stewart, J.C. Stewart and Paul Stewart, all of Utica; a half sister, Mary Griffin of Utica; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. Burial will be in Bethel cemetery in Beech Grove. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Bethel cemetery Fund, c/o Mrs. W.T. Lee, 190 Smith St., Calhoun, KY 42327.

Goldia Abbott Davis

LEXINGTON -- Goldia Abbott Davis, 73, of Lexington died there Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at the University of Kentucky Hospital. The Wayne County native was a retired factory employee and a member of Flat Rock Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, John Robert Davis, and a daughter, Sharon Kay Davis.

Survivors include a son, Roger Wayne Davis of Owensboro; a daughter Penelope Ann Greenwell of Lexington; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Noel Abbott of Louisville; and six sisters, Grace Taylor of Louisville, Anna Belle Vanover, Bertha Ball and Elvena Kidd, all of Stearns, Easter Adkins of New Richmond, Ohio, and Glendola Morgan of Chesapeake, Va.

Services are at 1 p.m. EDT Saturday at McCreary County Funeral Home in Whitley City. Burial will be in Mount Union cemetery in Keeno. Visitation is after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
