Louise Cooper Snyder
10 July 2001

Louise Cooper Snyder, 95, of Owensboro died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Hermitage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The Owensboro native was state president of Kentucky PTA from 1966 to 1969, was past member of National PTA board and served on the Kentucky Committee on Children and Youth. She served on Governor's Safety Committee and Citizen's Health Committee. She was a Kentucky Colonel and member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Her husband, J. Russel Snyder, died in 1989.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Lett Shaw of Owensboro and Ann Chapman of Woodburn; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elmwood cemetery in Owensboro. There is no visitation. Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 E. Fourth St., Owensboro, KY 42403; Kentucky Talking Book Library, P.O. Box 818, Frankfort, KY 40602; or a charity of the donor's choice.

Ray D. Martin

MORGANTOWN -- Ray D. Martin, 86, of Rochester died Monday, July 9, 2001, at his home. The Butler County native was a retired farmer and member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Basham Martin.

Survivors include a son, Norman Ray Martin of Morgantown; five daughters, Janice Dossey and Carolyn Phelps, both of Morgantown, Joy Sheffield of Cromwell, Shirley McGehee of Browder and Charlotte Barrow of Rochester; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hannah Allen of Ennis and Lora Clay Newton of Morgantown.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Chapel in Morgantown. Burial will be in Dan Johnson cemetery in Morgantown. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gilbert Blake Walker
30 July 2001

BEECHMONT -- Gilbert Blake Walker, 55, of Beechmont, formerly of Hammond, Ind., died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at his home after a short illness. The Penrod native retired in 2000 as a boiler maker from Union Tank after 30 years and served with the Army in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969.

Survivors include two sons, Roger Walker of Medina, Ohio, and Christopher Walker of Africa; a brother, Larry Walker of Ennis; and five sisters, Margie Walker Belcher of Calvert City, Katherin Brister of Cedar Lake, Ind., Deloris Rhoades of Beechmont, Rebecca Allen of Beech Creek and Lottie Brown of Providence.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in Union Ridge cemetery near Twin Tunnels. Visitation is after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Robinson Shourds
29 July 2001

Mary Robinson Shourds, 72, of 3317 Millstone Circle, Owensboro, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Redbanks Nursing Home in Henderson. The Ohio County native retired from Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital as a cook and enjoyed cooking for others. Her husband, James Shourds, died in 1980.

Survivors include a daughter, Anna Shourds of Owensboro; and a sister, Nora Christine Grant of Fordsville.

Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Joe Bandy Penrod
5 June 2001

Joe Bandy Penrod, 68, of 3701 South Griffith Ave., Owensboro, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at his home. The Greenville native retired from the Owensboro Public Schools as a teacher and an administrator and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Goodwin Penrod; a son, Todd Penrod of Dallas; two brothers, Billy Penrod of Benton and Ed Penrod of Columbia, Tenn.; and two sisters, Nancy Alford of Madisonville and Jean Estes of Owensboro.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John United Methodist Church in Owensboro. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Ray Roberts
4 July 2001

UTICA -- William Ray Roberts, 56, of Utica died Monday, June 2, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Daviess County native retired from BFI, was a Catholic and an Army veteran. He was a member of McLean County Fish & Game and enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Josephine Ann Roberts; a son, Kevin Roberts of Utica; two daughters, Karen Winder and Kelly Duncan, both of Utica; eight grandchildren; and three sisters, Marsha Gayle Conder of Philpot, Donna Scott of McHenry and Pam Pullen of Owensboro.

Services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Whitesville. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery in Whitesville. Visitation is after 1 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Ronald McDonald House.

Mary Ellen Higdon

Mary Ellen Higdon, 89, of 410 West Ninth Street, Owensboro, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Tuck native retired after 42 years as a beautician and was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Joseph C. Higdon; four sons, Charles A. "Tony" Higdon and John W. Higdon, both of Owensboro, William Frederick Higdon of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Maron L. "Larry" Higdon of Island; two daughters, Mary Joellen Ivey and Mary Helena Schultz, both of Paducah; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Lorenzia Fulkerson of Owensboro; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday and after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Prayers will be said at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mary Thomas Ireland Adams

REEDSBURG, Wis. -- Mary Thomas Ireland Adams, 89, of Reedsburg, formerly of Hartford, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Our House of Residential Facility in Reedsburg. She was born near Hawesville and was salutatorian of the Beechmont High School Class of 1931. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Hartford Woman's Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Quincy Adams; and a daughter, Jennie Longest Adams.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Young of Baraboo, Wis., and Peggy Curtis-Crockett of Lafayette, Calif; and several grandchildren.

Services are at 6 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Baraboo. Burial will be in Memory Gardens in Hawesville at 10 a.m. Thursday. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Monday at the church. Rago Funeral Home in Baraboo is handling arrangements.

The Rev. John Paul Henning

The Rev. John Paul Henning, 73, of 2027 Airport Road, Owensboro, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Grand Cayman, British West Indies, native was founder and pastor for 20 years of First Church of God and a professional wrestler for 18 years. He served in the Navy for five years and was a World War II Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Peggy Jordan Henning; a son, Jim Henning of Providence; two grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Suggs of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Church of God in Owensboro. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to First Church of God, 2101 Kentucky 554, Owensboro, KY 42301.

William L. Payne
22 July 2001

William L. "Frog" Payne, 80, of 4237 Edgewood Court, Owensboro, died there Friday, July 20, 2001. The Daviess County native retired from Texas Gas after 35 years of service and was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral. His wife, Mildred Raley Payne, died May 18, 1999.

Survivors include three sons, Donnie Payne of Nashville, and Tom Payne and Tony Payne, both of Bowling Green; three daughters, Linda Sowders and Alice F. Cobb, both of Owensboro, and Sharon Saxton of Elizabethtown; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jean Hodskins of Owensboro.

Services are at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro. Entombment will be in Resurrection cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation is from noon to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Prayers will be said at 6:45 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Art Restoration Project, c/o St. Stephen Cathedral, 614 Locust St., Owensboro, KY 42301.

Betty Sue Zimmerman

LOUISVILLE -- Betty Sue Zimmerman, 68, of Louisville died there Friday, July 20, 2001, at Norton Audubon Hospital. The Brownsville native was a Catholic.

Survivors include a son, Eddie Zimmerman of Louisville; a daughter, Theresa Zimmerman of Louisville; two granddaughters; a brother, Luther James of Louisville; and a sister, Patty Warren of Beaver Dam.

Services are at 2 p.m. EDT Monday at Evergreen Funeral Home in Louisville. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to American Lung Association.
