Arnold Hallbach, keyboardist

Arnold Hallbach, a cabinetmaker and musician with a contagious zest for life, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital at age 81.

He was stricken with an aneurysm on Wednesday while playing music at a Christmas party at the Newport Elks Lodge in Cold Spring. He lived in Newport.

"He was gregarious and energetic and interested in 50 different things until the end of his life," said his son-in-law, Jim Dady.

Mr. Hallbach brought a spirited warmth wherever he went, said Sister Eulaliae, activities director at Carmel Manor nursing home, where Mr. Hallbach and his wife, Virginia, had volunteered for the past nine years.

"He had a young atti tude and young spirit. When he'd laugh his eyes would laugh, too," she said. "He played keyboard and piano, and his wife led sing-alongs.

"He liked to get people interested in singing and being happy. The first year they came here they did a special party for the people at Christmas and brought presents for everyone.

"They're just generous, genuinely nice people."

Mr. Hallbach grew up in Newport. His wife, Virginia Hudepohl, was from Bellevue.

"They grew up together," said his son-in-law.

They became a lifetime team, working together and playing together. They had been married 54 years.

Mr. Hallbach graduated from Covington Latin School at 16 and from Xavier University at age 20 with a degree in business. He worked as a manager and accountant for several companies.

He opened Hallbach's woodworking business in Bellevue, making custom cabinets for 45 years.

"He did all the work himself," Dady said.

Mrs. Hallbach worked with him in the office. He retired a year ago.

He had a lifelong interest in photography and later ventured into videography. He played piano, organ and electronic keyboard and collected organs. He played for churches and with several ensembles for parties and special events.

He was a gardener and a writer, setting a series of childhood memoirs to paper for his family. Until recently, he owned a motorcycle.

"Our father was a lively and entertaining man who, above all, was devoted to his family," said his son, Arnold Hallbach Jr. of Shandon, Ohio.

He was a member of St. Stephen Church in Newport, where he was former church organist. He was a member of Bellevue Senior Citizens, Ft. Thomas Retired Businessmen's Association and the Newport Elks. He was founder and former president of Tri-State Organ Club.

Besides his wife and son, survivors include another son, Raymond Hallbach of Cold Spring; daughters, Mary C. Dady of Woodlawn and Joan Schoettelkotte of Villa Hills; brothers, Robert Hallbach of El Cajon, Calif., and Paul Hallbach of Naples, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
