Civilla 'Billie' Simpson
11 December 2001

CENTERTOWN - Civilla "Billie" Simpson, 71, of Centertown died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Ohio County Hospital. The Livermore native was a homemaker and member of Lone Star General Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Buster" Simpson; and a son, John William Simpson Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Simpson of North Webster, Ind., and Gene Simpson of Climax, N.C.; five daughters, Janie Whitson of Kennedy, Ala., Jenny Likens of North Webster, Susie Simpson of Syracuse, Ind., Teresa Hall of Louisville and Cindy Wyatt of Milford, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Martin Barrett of Borden, Ind., and James Barrett of Steavensville, Mich.; and three sisters, Mary Hamilton and Sue Baize, both of Centertown, and Ruby Stites of Hartford.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Duke-Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Centertown. Burial will be in Daugherty Family cemetery near Centertown. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

William Joseph 'Jay' Fox

DRAKESBORO - William Joseph "Jay" Fox, 85, of Drakesboro died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Muhlenberg County native was owner and operator of Fox General Merchandise and Fox Bottle Gas. He was a member of Drakesboro First Baptist Church and Hazel Creek Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Boggess Fox; two daughters, Joanna Fox of Drakesboro and Janice Fox of Central City; and a brother, John Paul Fox of Brandon, Miss.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville.

M. Kathryn Pahon
2 December 2001

GREENVILLE, Pa. - M. Kathryn Pahon, 89, of Greenville, formerly of Owensboro, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Horizon Hospital in Greenville. The Burghill, Ohio, native retired from Interstate Department store in Owensboro in 1975 after more than 20 years of service as a sales associate. She was a member of Burghill Baptist Church and enjoyed flowers, playing bingo and spending time with family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael K. Pahon, on June 1, 1993; a son, Richard Pahon; and two daughters, Cinthia Pahon and Sueann Pahon.

Survivors include a brother, James A. Fell of Cortland, Ohio; a sister, Evelyn B. McKinley of Ashtabula, Ohio; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 11 a.m. EST Tuesday at Baumgardner Funeral Home in Kineman, Ohio. Burial will be in Kinsman cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Thelma Tooley Mason

ROCKPORT, Ky. - Thelma Tooley Mason of Rockport died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Beaver Dam Health Care Center. The Rockport, Ky., native retired as owner of Thelma's Grocery in Rockport and was as member of Rockport Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, W. Bruce "Pete" Mason; a daughter, Suzanne Alexander of Brownsville; a grandchild; and two sisters, Bette Curtis of Rockport and Hazel Rigsby of Madison, Tenn.

Services are at 1 p.m. Friday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will be in Echols cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ann Pendleton Wooten Sabetta
7 December 2001

Ann Pendleton Wooten Sabetta, 79, of Owensboro died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at her home. The Hartford native was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, D.A.R., Cotillion Club and the Goodfellows Board of Directors. She had been a partner in Cox Drilling, developed the Royal Oak Country Club and Bahama Reef Country Club and worked as an administrative assistant at the . Her husband, Thomas J. Sabetta Sr., died in 1972.

Survivors include a son, Thomas J. Sabetta Jr. of Louisville; and a granddaughter.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Owensboro. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery in Hartford. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Goodfellows Club.

James Roscoe Murphy

DEPOY - James Roscoe Murphy, 58, of Depoy died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. The Todd County native was a retired farmer, an entrepreneur and a Methodist.

Survivors include a son, Victor Tutt of Greenville; five daughters, Yolanda Eldridge of Clarksville, Tenn., Debra Bard and Barbara Drake, both of Greenville, Sandy Tutt of Hopkinsville and Lisa Sharber of Morton's Gap; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Edgar Lee Murphy of Louisville; two sisters, Jacquelin Bard of Depoy and Seanetta Murphy of Louisville; several nephews and nieces; and several cousins.

Services are at 1 p.m. today at Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church in Greenville. Burial will be in Reynolds cemetery in Greenville. Visitation is after 11 a.m. today at the church. Bibb's Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of arrangements.

Mattie Mae Phelps
2 December 2001

HARTFORD - Mattie Mae Phelps, 75, of Salem, Ind., formerly of Beaver Dam, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Meadow View Health Care & Rehab Center in Salem. The Ohio County native was a homemaker and attended Longview General Baptist Church. Her husband, Ivan Phelps, died in 1983.

Survivors include a son, Kevin Phelps of Hartford; a daughter, Karen Kiper of Corydon, Ind.; a grandson; and a brother, Sam Crowder of Hartford.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford. Burial will be in Sunnyside cemetery in Beaver Dam. Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

H.D. Gossett
25 November 2001

GREENVILLE - H.D. Gossett, 85, of Greenville died there Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital following a lengthy illness. The Muhlenberg County native was a member of Greenville Second Baptist Church. He retired from Peabody Coal Gilbralter Mine after 30 years of service as a coal miner and was a member of Pond River Masonic Lodge 244 F&AM. His wife, Dorothy Helen Gossett, died in 1996.

Survivors include two sons, Ron Gossett of Bowling Green and Doug Gossett of Hammond, Ind.; two daughters, June Ragland of Greenville and Marilyn Mitchell of Graham; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be conducted at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Hazel G. Porter

Hazel G. Porter, 76, of 2505 Middleground Drive, Owensboro, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Daviess County native retired from Anderson's and McAtee's department stores as a cosmetologist and was a member of Masonville Baptist Church. She was a member of Tabitha Sunday school class, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority and enjoyed reading, gardening, flowers and spending time with her grandchildren. Her husband, John T. Porter, died Sept. 26, 1998.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharron M. Young and Darlina McBride Etienne, both of Owensboro; a stepson, Dr. Johnny Porter of Metearie, La.; a stepdaughter, Sharon L. Kelly of Dixon; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his stepfather, Guy I. Jarboe of Owensboro; and several cousins.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Roy Simburger

WALSHVILLE, Ill. - Roy George Simburger, 78, of Walshville died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield, Ill. The Mount Olive, Ill., native was a farmer and worked at Clark Oil Refinery for 41 years. He was a member of St. Agnes Parish and Knights of Columbus Council No. 4608 and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Madonia Simburger; three sons, the Rev. Joseph Simburger of Warner, N.H., Don Simburger of Wilton, N.D., and L. Paul Simburger of Swansea, Ill.; three daughters, Elaine Reinhart of Nokomis, Ill., Marla Bertschinger of Owensboro and Brenda Criswell of Canton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; four brothers, Harold Simburger of East Alton, Ill., Earl Simburger of Dickinson, Texas, John Simburger of St. Peters, Mo., and Ohren Simburger of Edwardsville, Ill.; and a sister, Janice Simburger of Litchfield.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Hillsboro, Ill. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery in Mount Olive. Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Agnes Building Fund or Council of Catholic Women.

Betty Jane Morris

CALHOUN - Betty Jane Morris, 68, of Calhoun died there Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Riverside Manor Health Care Center. The McLean County native retired from General Electric Corp. of Owensboro and worked at the former Charles Chips plant in Calhoun. She was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and enjoyed sewing and crafts.

Survivors include a son, Daniel F. Higgs of Calhoun; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Terry Chambers of Calhoun; and three sisters, Linda Gish of Bremen, Judy Logsdon of Poplar Grove and Carolyn Chambers of Madisonville.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. Burial will be in Calhoun cemetery. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Rose Sollman
7 December 2001

BREMEN - Rose Sollman, 79, of Bremen died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. The Leslie County native had worked on an assembly line and was a member of Church of Christ.

Survivors include a son, Robert Sollman of Ashland City, Tenn.; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Dan Caudill of Gulf-Port, Miss., and Jerimiah Caudill of Bremen; and a sister, Omie Sizemore of Avawam.

Services are at noon Saturday at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento. Burial will be in Bethlehem cemetery in Bremen. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
