The Rev. Leonard Arcilesi

The Rev. Leonard Arcilesi, 75, a native of Louisville and priest of the Diocese of Owensboro, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at his home. His parents, Frank and Hazel Arcilesi and his only sibling, Vita Mae Schall-Miller, preceded him in death. He was the pastor of St. Martin Catholic Church in Owensboro, former pastor of St. William and St. Lawrence parishes in Daviess County and St. Stephen Church in Cadiz and the founding parish of St. Michael Church in Fort Campbell-Oakgrove. He was associate pastor of St. Pius X and St. Mary of the Woods in Daviess County. Father Arcilesi was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Owensboro on May 27, 1989, after an internship at St. Anthony in Peonia. He is recognized as a builder and renovator, having served more than 14 years on the Diocesan Building Committee.
A graduate of Bellarmine College in Louisville, Father Arcilesi received graduate degrees in education from the University of Cincinnati and St. Mary Seminary. He did post-graduate work at Purdue University, the University of Illinois, DePaul University, the University of New York and Georgetown University. He was a world traveler and student of the arts - a true renaissance person. He was involved in construction, building design, landscaping and planning.
A Kentucky Colonel and former teacher union leader, he served as president of his local in Cincinnati and was elected president of the Ohio Education Association. He was a high school teacher and administrator in the Cincinnati Public Schools. He also taught two years at Louisville's Manual High, was chief negotiator of the first master agreement contract in the social sciences, co-authored a textbook on the teaching of high school economics and served a year as a counselor in the Army Dependent Schools in Germany. As an educator, his main focus was on genuine learning and preparation for life skills. As an administrator, he stressed the improvement of teacher classroom techniques and increasing teacher professional development. As a leader in the teacher unions, he worked for improvement of teacher salaries and working conditions. He promoted scholarships for deserving students and in promoting vocational education.
He is survived by his aunt, Maryann D'Angelo of Detroit; two nephews, Fred and Frank Schall; three nieces, Deborah D'Angelo (Leonard), Joan Marie Thorpe and Lisa (Timothy) Stinson; eight great-nieces and great-nephews; and many devoted friends.
Funeral services in Owensboro are at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at St. Martin Catholic Church. Visitation will be at the church from noon until 8 p.m. on Monday and after 9 a.m. on Tuesday. A prayer vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday. Glenn Funeral Home is handling arrangements in Owensboro.
In Louisville, visitation will be at Bosse Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. EDT on Tuesday and after 9 a.m. Wednesday. There will be a vigil service at the funeral home at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and a prayer service at 11 a.m. Wednesday followed by burial in St. Michael cemetery.

Joan Ann Garrett

CENTRAL CITY - Joan Ann Garrett, 58, of 712 Morehead St., Central City died at 11:46 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Feb. 21, 1946, in Muhlenberg County. She was a homemaker and a member of Woodson Baptist Church in Powderly. She was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Garrett.
Survivors include her husband, Jewell Garrett of Central City; a son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Jessica Garrett of Central City; a granddaughter, Kayla Sigers of Central City; three brothers, Ronnie Pointer of Moorman, Bubby Pointer of Central City and Lewis Gene Pointer of Powderly; and two sisters, Betty June Dunn of Madisonville and Norma Jean Taylor of Jeffersonville, Ind.
Services are at 1 p.m. Sunday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Fairmount cemetery in Central City. Visitation is after 5:30 p.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home.
James 'Darrell' Stewart

SACRAMENTO - James "Darrell" Stewart, 60, of Sacramento died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. He was a retired police officer from the McLean County Police Department and a member of Fairview Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Bremen.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Stewart; three sons, Jamie Stewart, Michael Stewart and Darrin Stewart; a daughter, Mary Revlett; a brother, Harold Stewart; and two sisters, Flo Heltsley and Betty Monoghan.

BREMEN - Hazel Renee Knight Burch, 79, of Bremen died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of New Harmony Baptist Church in Bremen.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry Burch and Richard Burch; and two daughters, Lisa Sherman and Sherry Burch.

Alpha Marie 'Boots' Cessna

POWDERLY - Alpha Marie "Boots" Cessna, 75, of Powderly died Friday, April 30, 2004, at Sparks Nursing Center in Central City. She retired as a nurse from Muhlenberg Community Hospital and was a member of Powderly Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Cessna; and a sister, Leon Boggess.

Phyllis Lucille Von Roenn

SACRAMENTO - Phyllis Lucille Von Roenn, 83, of 1505 Lynn City Road, Sacramento, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at 9:50 a.m. at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. She was born in Four Lakes, Wash., on Aug. 19, 1920, and was a homemaker and U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
Survivors include two sons, William Henry (Jane) Von Roenn of Sacramento and Frank John Von Roenn of San Diego; two grandchildren, William Von Roenn and John Von Roenn, both of Sacramento; and a sister, Virginia Fatcher of Phoenix.
Services are at 10 a.m. Monday, May 10, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Kelly Turner officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem cemetery in Bremen. Visitation is after 5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 9, at the funeral home.

GREENVILLE - Mary Lois Jarvis, 78, of 2361 Highway 601, Greenville, died at 1:36 p.m., Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. She was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Muhlenberg County and was a homemaker and member of New Cypress Baptist Church.
Survivors include six sons and daughters-in-law, William and Phyllis Jarvis, Jimmy and Freda Jarvis and Richard and Kim Jarvis, all of Greenville, Jesse and Vickie Jarvis of Owensboro, Mitchell and Judy Jarvis of Greenville and Michael and Kathy Jarvis of Graham; three daughters, Joyce and Donnie Hope and Carolyn Hunt, all of Greenville, and Rosemary and Richard Buck of Beechmont; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Vincent of Greenville; and a sister, Opal Camplin of Morgantown. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Jarvis; a grandchild, Wendy Beth Jarvis; a sister, Elizabeth Ray; and three brothers, Charlie Vincent, Robert Vincent and Jewel Vincent.
Services are at 2 p.m. Friday, May 7, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Roy Finley will officiate. Burial will be in New Cypress cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

DRAKESBORO - Lois Wayne Hardison, 66, of Drakesboro died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. He was a retired sawmill worker and member of Christ of Calvary Church in Cleaton.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean (Bratcher) Hardison; a son, Kenny Lear; four daughters, Anna Pryor, Pamela Cople, Mary DeArmond and Polly Moore; two brothers, Harold Hardison and Eldon Hardison; and a sister, Dean McManaway.

Alma Katherine Tichenor

CENTERTOWN - Alma Katherine Tichenor, 91, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Beaver Dam Health Care Manor. She was a homemaker. She was born in Ohio County and graduated from Livermore High School. She was a member of West Point Baptist Church for 78 years and was a member of Matanzas Homemakers. She was preceded in death by her sister, Thelma Taylor.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Edmon Tichenor. They were married
on June 25, 1937. Other survivors include three sons, Bernard and Joanie Tichenor of Louisville, Darrel and Frances Tichenor of Hartford and Curtis and Kim Tichenor of St. Louis; a sister, Earnstine Render of Hartford; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will follow in Centertown cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until funeral time on Saturday. The family requests that contributions, in lieu of flowers, be made to the Ohio County Middle School Family Resource Center, 1404 South Main, Hartford, KY 42348. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
Frank Edward Keys

CENTRAL CITY - Frank Edward Keys, 76, of Central City died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. He retired from TVA, was a World War II veteran and a deacon of Pentecostal Church of God in Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Eula Bass Keys; four sons, Gregory Scott Keys, Michael D. Keys, Craig Franklin Keys and Carlos Demond Keys; two daughters, Linda Carol Snell and Brenda Dean Laird; and two sisters, Viola Brooks and Greek Mageline Nave.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Pentecostal Church of God in Christ in Greenville. Burial: West End cemetery in Greenville. Visitation: From 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Bibbs Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of arrangements.
