James Edward (Jim Ed) Abell, age 83, of 2230 Ford Avenue, Owensboro, died Friday, May 20, 2005 at his home. Born in Bloomfield, KY, a son of the late Virgil M. and Nellie Swearingen Abell, he retired as General Agent for Commonwealth Life Insurance after 34 years of service. A member of First Baptist Church, he was Sunday School Director for 19 years, served as a deacon from age 27 until retiring as Deacon Emeritus, and was a member of the Maverick Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, Lamp and Cross, Scabbard and Blade, the Men’s Glee Club, and the University Choristers. He also wrote for the Kentucky Kernel newspaper and the Kentuckian yearbook. A U.S, Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theater. He was a 60 year Mason and a Travelers Protective Association National Director.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Madison Jewett Abell on January 6, 1987, and is survived by his wife Marie Wood Laswell Abell; two daughter and their husbands, Julie Abell (Mark) Dexter of Danville, and Jamie Abell (Richard) Stewart of Brookfield, Connecticut; two step-daughters and their husbands, Larkin Laswell (Carroll) Hayden and Ann Laswell (Andy) Fiorella both of Owensboro; a stepson and his wife, John T. (Sarah) Laswell of Louisville, 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home. Graveside services and burial will be at 11:00 a.m. EST Wednesday at Battle Grove cemetery, Cynthiana, Kentucky.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children, 10200 Linn Station Road, Louisville, KY, 40220.

Alben Lewis "Al" Roark

Mr. Alben Lewis “Al” Roark, 78, of Owensboro, died Friday, June 10, 2005, at home. He was born March 31, 1927 to the late Rufus C. and Ferrell Gossett Roark in Muhlenberg County. A member of Macedonia Baptist Church where he had been a member of the Mastermen’s Sunday School Class for several years. He was an Army Veteran of WWII and he enjoyed watching UK and attending Kentucky Wesleyan basketball games. Al enjoyed reading and loved his family and being light hearted about life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Rena Strader Roark; one son, Terry Roark and his wife, Mary Lee of Owensboro; two daughters, Patricia Cox and her husband, Larry of Owensboro, Kathleen Hardin and her husband, Robert F. of Franklin, TN; seven grandchildren, Carol Ware and her husband, Bill, Caryn Cox, John Cox, Kevin and Angela Roark, Robert Allen Hardin and Rachel Hardin; two great-grandchildren, Lexie and Ashley Ware.

Funeral services will be 11:30 AM Monday at Glenn Funeral Home with entombment in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be provided by VFW Post 696. Visitation will be 2:00 until 6:00 PM Sunday and after 9:30 AM Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Association, 726 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY, 42301.

Lillian Davis Mayfield

Lillian Davis Mayfield, 89, of Owensboro, died Thursday, September 08, 2005, at her home. She was born January 27, 1916 to the late Harvey and Elodia Raymer Smith in Breckenridge County. She was a homemaker, a member of St. Stephen Cathedral and she enjoyed gardening, working in her yard, and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis X. “Zeb” Mayfield, who died June 19, 1997, two sons, Bobby Mayfield, who died September 8, 1995, and Barry Mayfield, who died May 28, 2004, and a grandson, Jonathan Clark, who died October 12, 1985.

Survivors include four sons, David Mayfield and his wife, Vena, of Owensboro, Harold “Ernie” Mayfield and his wife, Pat, of Utica, Lawes Mayfield and his wife, Sharon, of Utica, Terry Mayfield and his wife, Lisa of Cornelius, NC; four daughters, Sharon Logsdon and her husband, Bob, of Owensboro, Sue Wedding and her husband, Denny, of Yelvington, Mona Clark and her husband, Ronnie, of Owensboro, Jackie Mattingly of Owensboro; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Mayfield, of Owensboro, one sister, Daisy Carroll, of Owensboro, and twenty-two grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Stephen Cathedral conducted by Father John Vaughan. Burial will immediately follow in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 until time of the service Monday at Glenn Funeral Home, with prayers at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY, 42301.

Peggy Ann Head

Peggy Ann Head, 69, of 2526 Windsor Ave., Owensboro, went home to be with
the Lord on Tuesday, August 8, 2006. She was born on July 26, 1937, to Sim
and Zola Spencer near Whitesville.

Peggy was a longtime member of Third Baptist Church, where she served as part of the Greeter Ministry for 15 years. Prior to that, she was the pianist of Hall Street Baptist Church for 35 years, and her abiding love for church music remained at the center of her lifelong appreciation of many kinds of music. She also enjoyed antiquing and collecting, especially in Early American, Shaker and Amish styles.

Before retiring from Owensboro High School, Peggy was the school's guidance secretary for 20 years. She was a member of the Jubilee Chapter of Daviess
County Homemakers Club.

Survivors include Peggy's husband of 49 years, Joseph Leo Head; her sons, David Carey Head and his wife Paula of Leesburg, FL, and John Eric Lumea and his wife Alisha of Brooklyn, NY; a grandson, Andrew Head; her mother, Zola
Spencer of Owensboro; her brother, Dr. B.E. Spencer and his wife Evelyn of Louisville; and her half-brother, Michael Spencer and his wife Denise of Oneida.

Peggy's life was celebrated with a worship service held at 11 AM on Friday, August 11, 2006, at Third Baptist Church. The service was led by Dr. Dwight Moody, dean of the chapel at Georgetown College; Dr. James Byrd, pastor of Third Baptist Church; and the music ministry of the church. She is buried in
Rosehill cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Third Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 808, Owensboro, KY, 42302.

Jason C. Terry

Jason C. Terry, 39, of Owensboro, passed away suddenly on October 5, 2010 at Owensboro Medical Health System. Born in Owensboro, he was a 1990 graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School where he excelled in basketball and baseball. Known affectionately as both Dog and Smiley, he holds the record for the most steals by an Owensboro Catholic basketball player, taking the ball away 107 times in the 1989/1990 season. Jason was an active member of Roseville Baptist Church in Hancock County, where he taught kindergarten through 5th grade Sunday school. For 11 years he worked with NASCAR as a jack man and right rear tire carrier for Brewco Motor Sports for drivers Mark Green, David Green, Casey Atwood, Jeff Purvis, Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffel, and Kevin Grubb. Following his NASCAR career he was co-owner of MJ's Flooring.

Mr. Terry is survived by his wife of 13 years, Regina Blan Terry; his children, Jason Blake Terry and Kendall Lee Terry, at home; his parents, Clint and Marsha Johnson Terry of Owensboro; his sisters, Cassie Stelmach and her husband Kevin, Kristy Ebelhar and her husband Brian, and Misty Durbin and her husband Wayne, all of Owensboro; his mother and father-in-law David and Leniah Blan of Philpot, his brothers-in-law, John Blan and Bobby Blan, both of Owensboro; his grandmothers, Betty Jo "Mimi" Johnson and Margaret Terry, both of Owensboro; his grandparents-in-law Bob and Peggy Blan of Patesville; and his nieces and nephews, Kayla, Cody, Kristina, and Wesley Stelmach, Dylan and Maci Durbin, and Mollie and Mallorie Ebelhar, all of Owensboro; and several aunts and uncles.

The funeral service for Mr. Terry will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday and from 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Blake and Kendall Terry Scholarship Fund, care of Chase Bank.

Mr. Thomas R. Beyke, 66, of 3723 Hawthorne Drive, Owensboro, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. He was born August 22, 1936, of Thomas Bernard, and Hattie B. Whitaker Beyke in Daviess County. He retired from U.S. Postal Service, was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and was an Air Force Veteran.

Three sisters preceded him in death, Cil Ebelhar who died 6-8-2000, Juanita Vowels who died 7-17-1967, and Jeanette Rumage who died 4-21-2000.

Survivors include, one brother, Bernard Beyke of Sorgho; two sisters, Carol Hodskins of Owensboro, and Mary E. Schrecker of Rome, also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2003 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, entombment will follow in Resurrection cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003 and after 8:30 a.m. Friday, prayers will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home.

Mary Frances Barfield

Mary Frances Barfield, 87, of 2169 Yelvington-Knottsville Rd., Maceo, died Monday, June 2, 2003 at Heartland Villa in Lewisport, KY. She was born in Lake City, FL on November 22, 1916 the daughter of Edward Oxford and Lillian M. Shepard Little. She lived in Florida most of her life moving to Owensboro eight years ago following the death of her husband. She was a homemaker and enjoyed antiques, reading and swimming. Her husband, Barney Barfield, preceded her in death in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Bill Barfield of Hobe Sound, FL; two Daughters, Pam Dawson, of Maceo and Pat Still of The Villages, FL and 5 Grandchildren.

Respecting Mrs. Barfield’s wishes there will be no memorial services.

Edith Irene Foster, 88, of 812 Triplett Street, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at the Hermitage Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Glasgow, KY and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was co-founder with her husband, Wendell, of the Wendell Foster Campus for Developmental Disabilities in 1947. It first opened as the Spastic Home and School. She also was a Lady Kentucky Colonel and a KY Colonel and a member of the Spastic Guild, had been involved in many fundraisers, and enjoyed reading. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell Foster in 1994.

Survivors include her daughter, Louise Foster of Owensboro, a half sister, Frances Abell of Robertsdale, Ala., several nieces including Lucy Kunze and Soni Brown, both of Owensboro, Jerri Robertson of Evansville, In., Jean Vanlandingham of Batavia, Oh., Vicki Sparks of Danville, KY a sister-in-law, Helen Vincent of Danville, and a close friend, Lucille Rose of Owensboro.

Services will be at 1:00 P.M. Friday, June 6, at the Glenn Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Elmwood cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00-8:00 P.M. and Friday after 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Wendell Foster Campus, P. O. Box 1668, Owensboro, KY 42303, First Baptist Church, 230 J. R. Miller Blvd., Owensboro, KY 42303, or Hospice of Owensboro, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Nettie "Mamie" "Mother Net" Ashby

Nettie Ashby (Mamie, Mother Net), formerly of 2920 Yale Place, Owensboro, died Saturday, August 30, 2003 at the Hermitage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 104. The Daviess County native was a homemaker and member of the Grace Baptist Church of Bowling Green. Miss. Nettie, who loved life, enjoyed cooking, shopping, collecting dolls, and spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Herbert T. Ashby on January 29, 1994 and a son, Ashford Tanner Stevens on July 19, 1994 .

She is survived by a daughter, Anna Yeiser of Owensboro; five grandchildren, Jerry Yeiser, Jan Sterett, and Kaye Henry all of Owensboro, Dina Smith of Philpot , and Judy Rowland of Whitesville; 11 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; three step-children, Fred Ashby of Bowling Green, Hilton Ashby of Russellville, and Jo Ann Kurvin of Sarasota, FL; nine step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:30 A.M. Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at the Glenn Funeral Home with burial in Rosehill cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 P.M. on Tuesday, September 2, 2003 and after 9 A.M. on Wednesday.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Kentucky Baptist Children’s Home.
