Elizabeth 'Betty' Clarke Hagan
05/16/04

Elizabeth "Betty" Clarke Hagan, 89, of 2415 Kentucky 60 East, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Jan. 19, 1915, in Sacramento, the daughter of the late Dr. John William and Julianna Ellis Clarke. She moved to Owensboro in 1923 and graduated from Daviess County High School in 1931. She married Robert Mensa Hagan in 1934 and worked briefly at Ken-Rad and at Cunningham's Drugs in West Dearborn, Mich. She went into the car business with her husband in 1946 and remained active until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Mensa Hagan Sr. in 1991; and her grandson in 2003.

Mrs. Hagan was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and attended Breckenridge United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Past Worthy Matron of the Acacia Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star #46, Past Grand Chapter Committee Member, past Grand Representative to South Carolina, past Deputy Grand Matron, present and past Worthy High Priestess of the Order of the White Shrine as well as past Supreme Instructor and Past Supreme Queen. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile and past president and board member of the Yellow Banks Chapter of AARP. She was a charter member of the American Business Woman's Association and enjoyed tennis, bowling, decorating and publicity for the organizations with which she was involved, reading and walking.

She is survived by a daughter, Julianna "Dolly" H. Nance of Louisville; three sons, Robert M. "Mickey" Hagan Jr. and his wife Mary, Ronald L. "Ron" Hagan and Randall D. "Randy" Hagan and his wife Bonnie, all of Owensboro; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 until 8 p.m. Monday and after 10 a.m. Tuesday. An Eastern Star service will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the memorial fund of the Order of Eastern Star, 4226 Hayden Park Drive, Owensboro, KY 42303.

James E. Reynolds

James E. Reynolds, 84, of 1217 Walnut St., Owensboro passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, at his home. He was born in Daviess County and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Maceo United Methodist Church and was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II and enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Mae Reynolds on Aug. 21, 1990.

Surviving are his son, Steven Reynolds; and his daughter, Shirley Reynolds, both of Owensboro.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2004, at Glenn Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Yellow Creek cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and after 8 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the VFW Honor Guard.

Ammie Mae Geary

BEAVER DAM - Ammie Mae Geary, 93, of Beaver Dam died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Professional Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hartford. She was born in Ohio County to Aaron and Paralee Scott and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Geary, died Feb. 25, 1982; a daughter, Katherine Schroader; and a son, Lester Geary.

Survivors include three sons, Cecil D. Geary, Roy E. Geary and Donald E. Givens, all of Beaver Dam; three daughters, Jennie L. Bacallao, Hazel Simpson and Edith Goff, all of Beaver Dam; two brothers, Virgil Scott of Echols and Riley Scott of Beaver Dam; two sisters, Gladys Moseley and Thelma Strawbridge, both of Louisville; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will be in Echols cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today, May 17, and from 9 a.m. to services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mike Compton

HARNED - Mike Compton, 39, of Harned died Thursday, June 10, 2004, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Harned.

Survivors include his wife, Salena Compton; a son, Michael Cody Compton; a daughter, Sidney Paige Compton; his mother, Katherine Compton; his grandmother, Edna Henninger; a brother, Robbie Compton; and two sisters, Rhonda Coffey and Robin Pike.

Services: 1 p.m. Sunday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Custer cemetery. Visitation: From 3:30 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

James Allen Westerfield
05/17/04

James Allen Westerfield, 63, of 224 E. 5th St., Owensboro, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004, at his home. He was retired from the Chemical Lab at Green River Steel Corp. after 28 years. He also had worked as a service technician with Siemens/Westinghouse and Eaton Industries. He was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church where he was very active. He enjoyed collecting and restoring antiques, woodworking, fishing, gardening and spending time with his family and friends. He was a 1958 graduate of Daviess County High School.

Surviving is his wife of 44 years, Janice Westerfield; his daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Robert Sterge of Owensboro; his mother, Ruby Westerfield of Owensboro; two grandchildren, Maggie and Andrew; his brother and his wife, Larry and Dora Westerfield of Owensboro; several beloved nieces and nephews; and three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Edna and Jim Duvall and Donna and Keith Smith of Owensboro and Melissa and Barry Bruce of Evansville.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Bellevue Baptist Church with burial following in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Glenn Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Bellevue Baptist Church, 519 W. Byers Ave., Owensboro, KY 42303.

Frank A. Mitchell

Mr. Frank A. Mitchell, 65, of 4810 Old Lyddane Bridge Road, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at his residence. He was born Sept. 1, 1938, in Owensboro to the late Raymond L. and Doris Rone Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was previously employed as a professional photographer for Texas Gas Transmission Corp. for more than 18 years, and left to fulfill his lifelong dream of a farming career in 1976. He was also involved as a partner at Planters and Center Brick tobacco warehouses. He was a member of the board of directors at National City Bank and Sorgho Airport Fire Department. Mr. Mitchell served in the U.S. Army in the medical research unit. He was a former member of Daviess County Lion's Club and served on the board of directors of Orbit Gas Co. He was a loyal supporter of Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Ann Taylor Mitchell; a special son and his wife, Lee A. and Teresa Mitchell of Owensboro; and two wonderful grandchildren, Zachary Allen Mitchell and Keeley Rone Mitchell.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Daviess County. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. today at James H. Davis Funeral Home. James 'Jim' Lawrence Ivey Sr.

James "Jim" Lawrence Ivey Sr., 78, of 419 E. 22nd St., Owensboro died Friday, May 14, 2004, at his son, Tony Ivey's home. He was born May 8, 1926, to the late James Paul and Mary Dobry Ivey in Daviess County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie Hayden Ivey, who died in November 1999. They were married Aug. 31, 1947.

Jim retired from the Owensboro Police Department with the rank of Lt. Colonel, Chief of Detectives in 1986, after serving 39 1/2 years with the Owensboro Police Department. He started with OPD in 1947 as a foot patrolman and graduated to cars after his wife, Millie, taught him to drive.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, was honorably discharged in March 1946 with the rank of Seaman First Class and was a longtime Kentucky Colonel. He also was a member of the local FOP.

He enjoyed golf, shopping and was passionate about exercising and physical fitness. He loved meeting new people, telling jokes, laughing and staying in touch with old friends. He also enjoyed watching area high school sports as long as his health permitted. Some of his happiest times were spent in the company of his wife, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, Tony and Anita Ivey and Jim and Linda Ivey Jr. of Owensboro, Mike and Linda Ivey of Utica and Pat and Joellen Ivey of Paducah; three daughters and their husbands, Karen and Jeff Byrge of Sikeston, Mo., Donna and Terry Hamilton and Robin and Greg Leach of Owensboro; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be at noon Monday at Blessed Mother Catholic Church with burial in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday with prayers being said at 7 p.m. Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Dr., Owensboro, KY 42301.

Lucille Leak Mondy

Lucille Leak Mondy, 88, of Cincinnati, wife of the late Booker T. Mondy, who preceded her in death, departed to join her Lord and a host of family members and friends on Wednesday, May 12, 2004. Lucille, known as "BoBo" to her grandchildren and "Sis" to her brother, was a God-fearing woman who put all her trust in the Lord. She was born to Archie Sr. and Lucy Leak on Feb. 6, 1916, in Owensboro. She was the only girl in the family with three brothers, Archie Jr., Johnny and George.

Lucille was a member of the Fourth Street Baptist Church in Owensboro until she moved to Cincinnati. Upon her arrival, she joined Bethel Baptist Church. In 1949, Lucille was joined in holy matrimony to Booker T. Mondy. They joined Greater Liberty Baptist Church in 1951. As a member of Greater Liberty, she was active in groups such as The Bells of Liberty (Gospel Chorus), Ella Alcorn Circle (Missionaries/Women in White), William Cox Club, Golden Ages, Satisfied Seniors, Sunday school and Wednesday night prayer meeting.

BoBo/Sis leaves to celebrate her homecoming as she takes the hand of her Lord to the heavenly gates, leaving her son, Bernie W. Johnson (Dolores) of Cincinnati; her brother, George Leak (Deanna) of Owensboro; her stepdaughter, Verna Long of Seattle; and a host of relatives and friends. May the peace of the Lord by with you and all of us ... Rest in peace, BoBo/Sis.

Funeral services are Monday, May 17, 2004 at 11 a.m. EDT at Thompson, Hall & Jordan Funeral Home in Cincinnati. Visitation is after 10 a.m. Monday at Thompson, Hall & Jordan Funeral Home. Local arrangements are being handled by McFarland Funeral Home in Owensboro.

Manuel L. Ashworth

LOUISVILLE - Manuel L. Ashworth, 83, of Louisville died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Caritas Medical Center. The Pellville native was a retired carpenter and a member of Victory Memorial Baptist Church, Suburban Masonic Lodge #740, Carpenters Union Local #64 and the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee Ashworth; friends, Don and Debbie Chaudoln; and two sisters-in-law, Lilly Ashworth and Alice Ashworth.

Services are at noon EDT Monday at O.D. White & Sons in Louisville. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Visitation is from noon until 7 p.m. Sunday and after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Victory Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund.
