Mary Garrison Moore, served others

Mary Garrison Moore helped out wherever help was needed - at church, at school or at a nursing home.

"She helped out where she could," said a nephew, Donnie Moore of Falmouth.

"She was very independent. She liked to take care of herself, and she didn't want to depend on anybody."

Ms. Moore, of Falmouth, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas. She was 83.

She grew up on a farm in Bourbon County with nine brothers and sisters. Her parents were share-croppers who grew tobacco, so the family moved from place to place for new land to farm.

While living in Pendleton County, Ms. Moore met and married Floyd Moore in 1935. They were married 40 years.

The couple never had children, but she enjoyed helping out with Sunday school classes at Morgan Christian Church in Falmouth.

She also enjoyed traveling and visiting her brothers, sisters and other relatives in Fayette County and in Ohio and Michigan, Mr. Moore said.

After she divorced in the mid-1970s, Ms. Moore became actively involved in the community. She served as secretary and treasurer for the Pendleton County Board of Education in Falmouth for five years, and she was a nurse's aide at Butler Rest Home for more than 10 years, Mr. Moore said.

Other survivors include a sister, Jewell Dickey of Cynthiana; and brothers, Luther Garrison of Berry and Gerald Garrison of Milton, Fla.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Paris Cemetery, Bourbon County. Memorials are suggested to Morgan Christian Church, Falmouth, Ky., 41040.
