Mr. Vervie R. Duke, 93, of 6100 Carter Road, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 18, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born Jan. 26, 1911, to the late Cater and Magnolia Thomas Burden Duke in Butler County. He was a retired farmer and enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his garden. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Duke, who died in 1969; a daughter, Linda Duke, who died in 1978; and a grandson, Daniel Duke, who died in 1993.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Onie Phelps Duke of Owensboro; a son and his wife, Emmett (Paula) Duke of Owensboro; a daughter, Lee Kassinger of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Tammy Greenwell, Jeff Kassinger and Steven Duke; and five great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Owensboro Christian Church, 2818 New Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303 or Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Ella Irene Higgs Kendall

Ella Irene Kendall (nee Higgs), 91, a former clerk at the Evansville Airport, beloved mother of Jane Patterson; loving grandmother of Vada Kinnebrew, Byron Patterson and Carla Patterson; and dear great-grandmother of Joseph "Joey" Patterson, departed Sunday, May 16, 2004.

Visitation will be from noon until time of service at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at Pleasant Point Baptist Church in Pleasant Ridge. Interment will be in Pleasant Point Church cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by Renfro & Piper and Young Funeral Home of Owensboro.

Thomas Henry 'Doc' Bader

Thomas Henry "Doc" Bader, 76, of 2921 Choctaw Drive, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on Aug. 30, 1927, in Daviess County to the late Henry Goebel and Eileen (Berry) Bader. He retired from Green River Steel Corp. after 33 years of employment. He enjoyed yardwork and was one of the original mall walkers. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert D. Bader, in October 2000.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Barbara Lawson Bader; a daughter, Sherry Lambert of Owensboro; two grandsons, Lawson Lambert of Baltimore and Landon Lambert of Murphysboro, Ill.; and three sisters, Louise Ferrante of Connecticut, Bette Reynolds of Dover, Pa., and Linda Praria of Deltona, Fla.

Memorial services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Boulware Center, 731 Hall St., Owensboro, KY 42303 or Building Fund, Owensboro Christian Church, 2818 New Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303.

Vicki Bell Edge

Vicki Bell Edge, 49, of Hammond, Ind., formerly of Owensboro, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at her home. She was born on Aug. 16, 1954, in Owensboro to the late Paul J. and Dorothy (Bartlett) Bell. She was a member of St. Casimir Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Thomas Edge; a son, Joseph Bell, at home; a brother, Joseph Bell of Owensboro; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie and Sonny Wilson of Lowell, Ind., Marilyn and Ronnie Epley of Owensboro and Paula and Mike Harms of Mount Carmel, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Mater Dolorosa cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, where prayers will be said at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Alvena Dillender

BREMEN - Alvena Dillender, 79, of Bremen, formerly of White Plains, died at 8:10 a.m., Monday, May 17, 2004, at Sparks Nursing Center in Central City. She was born on July 9, 1924, in Muhlenberg County to the late James Preston and Elsie Rollie Durall. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Dillender, who died in 1978; and a son, Larry Smith.

She is survived by four sons, James Smith of Valparaiso, Ind., Roy Smith of Bremen, Billy Smith of Greenville and Scott Dillender of Calhoun; a sister, Frances Rice of Madisonville; a brother, James Crawford Durall of Beechmont; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, at Reid-Walters Funeral Home in Earlington with the Rev. Joe Groves officiating. Burial will be in Concord cemetery in White Plains. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Charles W. 'Duddy' Burden

CLOVERPORT - Charles W. "Duddy" Burden, 89, of Cloverport died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Medco Center in Hardinsburg. He was born Oct. 6, 1914, in Cloverport and was retired from American Olean Tile Co. in Cloverport. He was a member of Cloverport Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alma Burden on Feb. 3, 1989; and a daughter, Alma Lee Burden on Oct. 15, 2001.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlene Pierce of Cloverport; three grandchildren, Terry Pierce of Greenwood, Ind., Darlene Johnston of Boonville, Ind., and Tony Pierce of Chandler, Ind.; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wallace Funeral Home in Cloverport with the Rev. Harry Dooley officiating. Burial will be in Cloverport cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Donald E. Thayer

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Donald E. Thayer, 66, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, in Vancouver. He was born in San Diego on March 7, 1938, to the late Ernest W. Thayer and Dorothy M. Johnson Thayer. He enjoyed many stays in Owensboro with friends and relatives. On his last visit he walked the William H. Natcher Bridge on dedication day. He was retired from the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include Richard L. and Marilyn L. Thayer Frederickson of Orange, Calif., and John A. and Sue Thayer of Owensboro. There are many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews in California and Kentucky. Memorial services with ashes scattered at sea will be conducted in California. James H. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Dalton Howard

BUEL - Dalton Howard, 63, of the Buel area of McLean County died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. Harlan Dalton Howard was born June 17, 1940, in McLean County to the late Harlan and Lillian Troutman Howard, was a 1958 graduate of the former Calhoun High School, attended Murray State College and was later married to the former Dianne Gross on May 28, 1961, at the Towers Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Pleasant Hope General Baptist Church and also enjoyed University of Kentucky basketball, watching the birds at his bird feeders, his grandchildren and family. Dalton always looked forward to the fall season and being able to travel to the Smoky Mountains. He always enjoyed being able to spend time, share old memories and playing cards with the many people that came to spend time with him.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Dianne; a son and his wife, Mark and Tonya Howard of Calhoun; two daughters and a son-in-law, Melinda Howard of Calhoun and Stephanie and Jeff Higdon of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Matthew Howard, Kennedy Howard and Reece Higdon; and two great-grandchildren, Bryce Basham and Alysia Howard.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel with the Rev. Ron Hampton and the Rev. Steve Dame officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hope cemetery in McLean County. Friends may visit with the Howard family from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until time of services Sunday at Musters in Calhoun.

The Howard family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 11700 Commonwealth Drive, Suite 500, Louisville, KY 40299. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at Musters in Calhoun.

Mary Elizabeth 'Liz' Cox

GEORGETOWN - Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Cox, 73, of Georgetown, formerly of Calhoun, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at her home in Georgetown following a four-year battle with cancer. Mary Elizabeth was born Oct. 7, 1930, in the McLean County area of Nuckols to Farest R. and Lucille Crowe Howard and was better known was "Lizzie" by her family and friends. She was a 1949 graduate of the former Calhoun High School and was married to Orion Lyons Cox on Dec. 29, 1950. Liz Cox was a gifted artist and was especially known for her flower and stained glass work as the owner of a florist and custom frame shop in Calhoun and most recently at Heirloom's Stained Glass and Bears in Georgetown. She was a member of Calhoun Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Orion Lyons Cox, who died Aug. 15, 1987.

Survivors include a son, Tommy Cox of Oldham County; two daughters and their husbands, Ann and Walter Fister and Ruth and Steve Adams, both of Georgetown; her mother, Lucille Howard Bellew of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Ruth Arin Cox, Logan Adams and Alex Adams, all of Georgetown; two stepgrandchildren, Morgan Fister and Justin Fister, both of Lexington; two stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Allen Howard of Utica; a sister, Shirley Trunnell of Utica; a stepsister, Sue Bellew Berry of Henderson; and 10 nephews and three nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. CDT Saturday at Calhoun Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Alton Earl Crowe and assisted by the Rev. Allen Howard and Dr. Richard Sams. Burial will be in Old Buck Creek Baptist cemetery in McLean County. Visitation in Georgetown will be from 5 to 8 p.m. EDT today at Tucker, Yokum and Wilson Funeral Home in Georgetown. Visitation in Calhoun will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the church. Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel, is handling the funeral arrangements for the Cox family. The Cox family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to either Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504 or Buck Creek cemetery Fund, c/o Edward M. Trunnell, 9236 U.S. 431, Utica, KY 42376. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at Musters in Calhoun.

STEPHENSPORT - Franklin Hawkins Rice, 82, of Stephensport died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He had worked for the State of Kentucky, Department of Weights and Measures and was a member of Stephensport Baptist Church.

Services: 1 p.m. today at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Ekron Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation: After 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Brandon L. Willis

Brandon L. Willis, 29, of 20 River Road, Owensboro, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in Owensboro. He was born on March 23, 1975, in Bartow, Fla. He was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed playing basketball and spending time with his daughter.

Survivors include his wife, Tonya Burden Willis; a daughter, Samantha Nachole Willis Simpson; his mother, Wilma Willis of Owensboro; his father and stepmother, Kenneth and Beverly Willis of Owensboro; two brothers, Paul Willis and Stephen Willis, both of Owensboro; two half brothers, Tommy Willis of Evansville and Kenneth Darrell Willis of Owensboro; and a half sister, Kelly Renae Willis of Owensboro.

Services and visitation will be private. James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Drug Abuse Resistance Education, Owensboro Police Department, Attention: crime prevention, 222 E. 9th St., Owensboro, KY 42303.
