Gertrude Johnson Hall, 54, of Harrison County, died Saturday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Johnny Lewis Hall, preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a son, Johnny Hall, and daughters, Barbara Ann Hall and Janice Hall.

Survivors include sons, Wayne Hall, Earl Hall and Jerry Hall, all of Harrison County; a daughter, Linda Lou Hall Lamb of Harrison County; sisters, Maggie Kirby, Nora Campbell, Paralee Hardy and Kate Stepp, all of Estill County; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunrise Cemetery.

Jane Catherine Heist, 84, of Ft. Mitchell, died Friday. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Jay Elmer Heist, died in 1975.

Survivors include sons, Joe Heist of Granville, Ohio, Jack Heist of Erlanger, Jerry Heist of Covington, Elmer Heist of Albany and Mark Heist of Somerset; daughters, Mary Jane Jenkins of Louisville and Cathy Kennedy of Manchester; sisters, Helen Murdough and Sister Agatha Fox, S.N.D., both of Cincinnati; 32 grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial was today at Blessed Sacrament Church, Ft. Mitchell. Burial was to be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Effie Houston, 63, of Florence, died at 12:25 a.m. this morning at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She is survived by her husband Danny Houston. Arrangements are pending at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.

Anna Mae Meier, 71, of Crestview Hills, died Friday at her residence. She was retired from the Kenton County Circuit Clerk's Office. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and St. Henry Primetime Seniors, and was a volunteer with St. Elizabeth ElderM ed.

Survivors include sons, Chris Meier of Fairfield, Ohio, Dan Meier of Edgewood and Paul Meier of Crestview Hills; daughters, Kathy Nienaber of Cincinnati and Marian Grosser of Edgewood; a brother, Don Burkhardt of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Pat Buenger of Centerville, Ohio; and 15 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Ft. Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until time of services Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Muriel K. Nie, 77, of Ft. Wright, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Terry Hicks of Ft. Wright; a son, John C. Nie of Covington; a sister, Rose Banfield of Burlington; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Ruth Schlachter, 80, of Ft. Wright, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert Schlachter, died in 1979.

Survivors include sons, Bob C. Schlachter of Arnold, Md., and David W. Reed of Royal Oak, Mich.; and four grandchild ren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Church, Ft. Wright. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to the Campbell Lodge Boys Home, 150 Skyline Drive, Cold Spring, 41076.

Earl Singleton, 77, of Elsmere, died at 10:10 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired machinist for White Consolidated Industries. He was a member of the American Legion and Covington Lodge No. 109 F&AM. His wife, Rowena Vallandingham Singleton, died in 1988.

Survivors include nephews, Robert Barlow of Erlanger, Don Barlow of Powell, Ohio, and Frank Barlow of Houston.

Thelma Stansberry, 98, of Cincinnati, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati.

Christine F. Stephens, 88, of Florence, died at 12:25 p.m. Sunday at Woodspoint Care Center, Florence. She was a retired employee of the Palm Beach Co., a clothing distributor. She was a member of the Florence United Methodist Church and the Amalgamated Cotton Garment and Allied Industries Local 609. Her husband, Lewis E. Stephens, died in 1975.

Survivors include daughters, Lydia Frances Payne of Miamisburg, Ohio, and Gladys Fields of Scottsmoor, Fla.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Belleview Cemetery, Belleview. Burial will also be in Belleview Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Florence United Methodist Church, 7544 Dogwood Lane, Florence, 41042. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Devon Lee Michael Strange Stroude, died shortly after being born Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Buford Jesse Summitt, 67, of Warsaw, died Saturday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. He was a retired farmer and he attended Worthville United Pentecostal Church, Worthville. His wife, Daisy Summitt, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a sister, Martha Garrett of Warsaw.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Worthville Cemetery. Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton, is handling arrangements.

Paul W. Thompson, 45, of Newport, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a machinist for Floturn Corp. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Alexandria.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Thompson; sons, Brian Thompson and Brandon Thompson, both of Cold Spring; a daughter, Paula Sue Fryman of Cold Spring; a stepdaughter, Lekeyshia Heckler of Covington; a stepson, Bill Heckler of Newport; sisters, Loretta Barnes of Newport and Shirley Lawson of Bonneyman; and four stepgrandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Mary Marguerite Wedderstrand, 97, formerly of Florence, died at 5:50 p.m. Saturday at the Warsaw Nursing Home, Warsaw. Her husband, Harry Wedderstrand, died in 1988, and a son, Robert Wedderstrand, died in 1992. She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Burlington.

Survivors include a daughter, Jayne Rueter of Florence; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Redwood School, 71 Orphanage Rd., Ft. Mitchell, 41017. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Edgar L. Whitson, 80, of Cincinnati, formerly of Hinton, died Sunday at Providence Hospital, Cincinnati.

Ft. Thomas' Dr. Robert Elroy Buten

Dr. Robert Elroy Buten never lost his love for medicine.

Even when he retired after more than 30 years in private practice, he continued as a volunteer instructor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

In that role, he supervised resident physicians in the eye clinic at University Hospital, imparting his knowledge as an ophthalmologist.

Dr. Buten, 71, of Ft. Thomas, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.

The son of a physician, Dr. Buten graduated from the University of Cincinnati and completed post-graduate work in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He entered private practice in 1955 when he set up offices in Newport. He retired in 1991.

"He was a hands-on kind of guy," said his wife, Mary, who worked with her husband 10 years at the office.

"He was warm, loving, considerate, compassionate, a gentleman, quiet, conservative," she said. "He was there whenever you needed him."

After he retired, he enjoyed working with his computer and dabbled in genealogy. He put together booklets for his children and other family members about the Buten family line.

He had been a member of the medical staffs at the St. Luke Hospitals and St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Northern Kentucky and University Hospital, Children's Hospital Medical Center and Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati.

He also was a retired member of the American Medical Association, the Northern Kentucky Medical Association, the Kentucky State

Medical Society, the Cincinnati Society of Ophthalmology and was a non-resident member of the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Other survivors include sons, Robert E. Buten and John K. Buten of Cold Spring, and James M. Buten and Richard D. Buten of Ft. Thomas; a daugh ter, Mary Ann Cottrell of Florence; stepsons, Michael Visse of Louisville, Mark A. Visse of Pensacola, Fla., and John D. Visse of Okeana, Ohio; stepdaughters, Kim Visse Cruze of Cincinnati and Mary P. Visse Turley of Spring, Texas ; and 24 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright, 41011, or to St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1803 N. Ft. Thomas Ave., Ft. Thomas, 41075.
