Charles Franklin Jollay

Charles Franklin Jollay, 59, of Owensboro died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born June 2, 1945, in McLean County to Harold E. Jollay and Mary Pauline May and retired as a thoroughbred trainer and horse trainer. He was a dairyman, a member of New Macedonia General Baptist Church and enjoyed drag racing. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Eugene Jollay, in 1996; and his mother, Mary Pauline (May) Basinger, in 1989.

Survivors include four great-nieces; a great-nephew; two nieces, Robin Dowell of Owensboro and Shannon Blincoe of Lexington; two nephews, Brian Short and Eric Short, both of Calhoun; a brother, Larry Dale and Linda Jollay of Owensboro; and a sister, Regenia Ann and Ken Short of Calhoun.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home chapel. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brushy Fork cemetery. The Rev. Arnold Roberts will officiate.

Dr. Michael L. Stone

FARGO, N.D. - Dr. Michael L. Stone, 51, of Fargo died Thursday, July 8, 2004, in Ohio. Michael was born on July 10, 1952, in Covington to Robert L. "Stoney" and Mary "Bobbye" Stone. He married Wendy Hendrickson on Aug. 3, 1996; together they have five children and one grandchild.

Upon his graduation from Newport (Ky.) Catholic High School in 1970, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the Vietnam War as a medic stationed in Korea.

Michael was discharged in 1972. He then attended Thomas Moore College in Kentucky. He completed his residency in Worthington, Minn. In 1982, he opened his private practice in Moorhead, Minn., and in 1988 he joined the staff of Meritcare Medical Group in Fargo.

He served in various positions including: President of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners and the North Dakota Board of Podiatric Examiners. He studied in Russia and Switzerland with the AO Group, learning the Ilizarov Method for trauma cases. Michael was certified in the treatment of chronic wounds and co-founder of the Meritcare Wound Clinic. His most recent training was with The Delin Institutes for Peripheral Nerve Surgery.

Michael was a man of diversity. He enjoyed many cultures and had friends worldwide. His interests were: Medicine, education, power lifting, music, street rods and motorcycles. His interest in custom rods and motorcycles was evident when he became part owner of Aurora Rods and Customs, Inc. and Aurora Custom Choppers, Inc. of Moorhead, Minn.

He is survived by his wife, daughters, Brittany, Megan and Sarah of Fargo; sons, Luke (Erica) of Devils Lake, N.D., and Andy (Courtney) Hendrickson of Grand Forks, N.D.; a grandson, Kolby of Fargo; his mother, Mary (Bobbye) Stone of Fort Thomas; a sister, Robin (John) Lowe of Loveland, Ohio; and brothers, John (Brenda) Stone of Alexandria and Joe (Pam) Stone of Fort Thomas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert "Stoney" Stone; and a brother, Danny Stone.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, at Hope Lutheran Church South Campus, Fargo. There will be a memorial service at Fort Thomas at a later date. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo.

Dorothy Groscurth Cron

BOWLING GREEN - Dorothy Groscurth Cron, 93, of Bowling Green died at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at her residence. The Daviess County native was a homemaker and member of Owensboro Christian Church and Disciples of Christ and was a graduate of Owensboro High School. She was the daughter of the late Carl Conrad Groscurth and Fannie Belle Dutton Groscurth. She was the wife of the late Albert E. Cron.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, with interment in Fairview cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today, July 29, and from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors include three sons, Charles Cron and wife, Nancy, of Rockfield, Robert Cron and wife, Gayle, of Berea and Albert E. Cron II and wife, Linda, of Bowling Green; a daughter, Julia Ruth Cron Swenk and husband, Harold, of Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mary E. Brooks

Mary E. Brooks, 74, of 1980 Harry Smith Apartments, died at 12:32 p.m., Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Bon Harbor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born March 23, 1930, in Livermore and was a homemaker. She was a member of New Cypress Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Flo Mendez, Jimmy Emery, Loretta Emery, Edwin Emery and Mary Brooks; and a stepson, Jimmy Joe Brooks, who died July 18, 2004.

Survivors include her husband of eight years, James E. Brooks of Owensboro; a stepson, Roger Dale Brooks Sr. of Owensboro; three stepdaughters, Theresa Clark of Marion and Darlene Webb and Sandi Brooks, both of Owensboro; seven stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; five brothers, Clarence Emery of New York, Charles Emery of Wisconsin, Billy Emery of Virginia, Roger Emery and David Palmer of Indiana; three sisters, Elizabeth Rees of Owensboro, Nancy Quinn of California and Eva Brent of Kentucky; and a niece.

Memorial services are at 4 p.m. Saturday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home chapel. Visitation is from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

John Francis 'Frank' Powers Sr.

John Francis "Frank" Powers Sr., 70, formerly of Jackson, Miss., of 3838 Garden Terrace, Owensboro, died at his home at 1:15 p.m. July 10, 2004. He was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church. Frank was born at St. Lawrence on Feb. 26, 1934, the son of the late William Patrick and Mary Nellie Speak Powers. He was a graduate of St. Mary's College in St. Mary, Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and earned his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Frank was a priest, teacher and principal for the Diocese of Owensboro for a number of years. He taught college for 25 years at the Utica Campus of Hinds Community College in Raymond, Miss. He retired in 1998 and moved back to his hometown of Owensboro in June 2002.

Powers was a devoted husband, father and teacher. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Dorothy Gallenstein Powers; and three children, at home, Patrick, John Jr. and Regina Marie. Other survivors are four brothers, Edward "Shug" Powers and William Burke Powers of Owensboro, George Powers of Bowling Green, Joseph Powers of Louisville; and a sister, Theresa Marie Powers Clark of Murray. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Gregory Powers and Mark Anthony Powers. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Mass of Christian burial will be held at Immaculate Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Father Mike Clark, nephew of Powers, will officiate, with burial to take place in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be at James H. Davis Funeral Home today, July 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Frank Powers' Children Education Memorial Fund, 3838 Garden Terrace, Owensboro, KY 42301 or Owensboro Catholic Consolidated School System, 1524 W. Parrish Ave., Owensboro, KY 42301.

Dan Walter Whitsell

Dan Walter Whitsell, 57, passed away last week at his home in Owensboro. He was born in Evansville on Dec. 4, 1946, to Presley and Mabel Whitsell. Dan was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired as an electrician from Daramic Inc. in 2004.

Survivors include brothers Steve Whitsell of Owensboro and John Whitsell of Evansville; his nephew, Dan Whitsell of Louisville; nieces Angela Bumm of Owensboro and Leslie Whitsell of Evansville; and grandnephews Steven and Bryson Bumm of Owensboro.

Services will be private. James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Louis Wayne Turley

BOWLING GREEN - Dr. Louis Wayne Turley, 51, of Bowling Green died Monday, July 11, 2004, at Nags Head, N.C. He was born Jan. 12, 1953, in Great Lakes, Ill., to Marion "Bob" Turley and Joyce Turley. He was doctor of business administration at Western Kentucky University. Lou was a very kind and considerate man. He was loved by all who knew him. He was a wonderful, loving father and an incredible husband. The love that he had for his family was enormous. Lou lived his life as a Christian and was quick to help all those around him.

Lou was a teacher in the classroom and he was a teacher throughout his life. His ability to explain ideas, thoughts and concepts was truly a gift. He had the patience of a saint. Lou could relate to the youngest child and brightest scholar. He brightened all the lives that he touched.

Dr. Turley was a professor of marketing at Western Kentucky University. He received many outstanding teacher awards and was extensively published in the area of marketing. He received his doctorate from the University of Kentucky and his MBA and undergraduate degree from Murray State University.

Lou was an outstanding athlete. He was on the Murray State soccer team. He was a Kentucky Wildcats fan first and foremost.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Stratton Turley.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Nolan Turley of Bowling Green; two sons, Samuel Turley and Jet Turley, both of Bowling Green; two daughters, Emily Soule and Abigail Turley, both of Bowling Green; his father, Marion C. Turley of Moyock, N.C.; a brother, Bill Turley of San Diego and his wife Mayumi; a sister, Joyce Hodges of Virginia Beach, Va.; two nephews, Ricki Hodges and Kyle Hodges, both of Virginia Beach; and two nieces, Katie Hodges and Jessica Hodges, both of Virginia Beach.

Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at Hillvue Heights Church on Nashville Road in Bowling Green. Burial will be in Bowling Green Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hillvue Heights Church. In lieu of flowers, the family and friends have set up the Lou Turley Memorial Trust Fund for his children. Donations can be sent to Hillvue Heights Church, 3219 Nashville Road, Bowling Green, KY 42101.

Mary Michelle Harris Boyle and Katie Madison Boyle

PLANO, Texas - Mary Michelle Harris Boyle, 28, of 4504 Rising Hill Drive, Plano, and her daughter, Katie Madison Boyle, 16 months old, died Friday, July 2, 2004, in Effingham, Ill., in a car accident. Michelle was born in Atlanta, grew up in Owensboro and moved to Texas, where she attended and graduated from SMU. Michelle is survived by her husband of five years, Michael Boyle; and daughter, Shannon Elizabeth Boyle, 3 1/2 years old, both of Plano. Michelle was an exceptional woman whose selfless dedication to her family was merely a reflection of the determination and strength that carried her throughout her short life. Michelle's energy and love touched all who knew her. Michelle was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Emma Greenwell Hearth, who died in September 2003; and her father, Robert B. Harris Jr., who died in July 1999.

She is survived by her brother, Robert B. Harris III; a sister-in-law, Michelle Harris; a niece, Bailey Harris; her stepfather, Barry Hearth; and stepbrothers, Casey and Russell Hearth, all of Owensboro. She is also survived by her aunts and uncles, Carl and Molly Greenwell of Owensboro, Norbert and Nancy Greenwell of Gainesville, Fla., Brenda and Mike Harris of Franklin; and cousins, Meghan and Brian Greenwell, Leslie, Ben and Justin Harris. Katie Madison Boyle is survived not only by her father and sister, but by her grandparents, Phillip and Kathy Boyle of Raleigh, N.C., her stepgrandfather, Barry Hearth of Owensboro; and a great-grandmother, Mary Jane Boyle of Lafayette, Ind.

Services are at 2 p.m., July 7, at St. Stephen Cathedral. Visitation is at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Prayers will be at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery in Owensboro. Father Patrick Reynolds will preside over the services. The family wishes expressions of sympathy to take the form of donations to American Cancer Society, 319 W. 10th St., Owensboro, KY 42301 or Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, 3550 North Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85013. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Chris Williams

Chris Williams, 90, of 1208 W. 5th St., died Saturday, July 18, 2004, at his home. He was born in Daviess County and retired from the city of Owensboro. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church of Petit, where he was serving as a deacon, and was the former treasurer of the church. He loved to garden. He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Pauletta Rowan Williams, who died June 20, 2002; a brother, Milton Williams, who died in 1994; and a sister, Mae Ellen Smith, who died Sept. 12, 2002.

Survivors include two sons, James Elbert (Lucette) Williams of Owensboro and the Rev. Charles Daniel Williams of Anderson, Ind.; a daughter, Deborah Joyce (Thomas) Moorman of Owensboro; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mattie Lee Crump of Anderson.

Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope Baptist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Young's Funeral Home in Owensboro.
