Sister Mary Teresita Pionke

Sister Mary Teresita Pionke, 87, of 405 W. Parrish Ave., Owensboro died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at St. Joseph Villa in Maple Mount. Born in Chicago, Sister was a member of Glenmary Home Mission Sisters of America for 51 years. She lived and ministered in small towns and rural communities of Ohio, Kentucky and Georgia. She enjoyed working with children and adults with mental and physical challenges, and she was the driving force behind the establishment of a training center and group homes for women in Burke County, Ga.

Sister Teresita is survived by her sister, Frances Pionke of Niles, Ill., and her Glenmary family.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon, July 21, at St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro. There is no visitation. Glenn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Glenmary Sisters, P.O. Box 22264, Owensboro, KY 42304.

Thelma Jane Williams

DECATUR, Ala. - Memorial services for Mrs. Thelma Jane Williams, 69, of Decatur will he held Saturday, Aug. 1, 2004, at 2 p.m. at First Freewill Baptist Church in Owensboro, with the Rev. Tim Hall officiating. Burial will be in Serenity Hills cemetery.

Mrs. Williams died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Decatur General Hospital in Decatur. She was born Sept. 16, 1934, in Breckinridge County to Becham and Ella Smith Heath. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Thomas Williams Jr.

Mrs. Williams is survived by a son, Charles Thomas Williams of Beaver Dam; five daughters, Judy Parker of Hawesville, Barbara Crowe and Dinah Tudor, both of Decatur, Debra Williams of Beaver Dam and Trina Ellison of Hartselle, Ala.; a brother, Joe Bruner of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy Roberts of Owensboro and Winnie Varble of Orlando; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Helen Marie Taylor

HOPKINSVILLE - Helen Marie Taylor, 73, of 124 South Vine St., Hopkinsville, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville. She was born Jan. 23, 1931, to George Farrow and Esther Fox Farrow. She retired from Piggly Wiggly Deli and was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Mount Olive Usher Board and District Usher Board. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Danny Taylor.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jimmy Tyrone (Doretta) Bush of Owensboro and Rhonda Taylor Parris of Hopkinsville; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services are at noon Monday, July 19, at First Street Baptist Church in Hopkinsville. The Rev. C.E. Timberlake will officiate. Burial will be in Cave Spring cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at Adams & Sons Mortuary, 306 Mechanic St., Hopkinsville.

Donald E. Lyall

McDANIELS - Donald E. Lyall, 70, of McDaniels died Friday, July 2, 2004, in Hardinsburg. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors include two sons, Frank and William Lyall.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. Burial: Ivy Hill cemetery. Visitation: From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Donald Lyall Memorial Fund, c/o Trent-Dowell Funeral Home.

D.C. Smith

STEPHENSPORT - D.C. Smith, 85, of Stephensport died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at his home. He was a retired farmer and member of English Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Josie Smith; two sons, Dennie Smith and Larry Smith; a daughter, Brenda Pate; and a sister, Louise Hines.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Wallace Funeral Home in Cloverport. Burial: Ammons cemetery. Visitation: From 3 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Sister Helen Schill

TIFFIN, Ohio - Sister Helen Schill, 69, of Sisters of St. Francis in Tiffin died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Francis Home. She was born March 5, 1935, in Crestline, Ohio, to Gertrude (Sheibley) and William Schill.

Surviving are her sister, Mary Schill of Crestline; two brothers, Donald of Crestline and James of Cortland; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Patrica Shindeldecker, Ruth Coyne and Beatrice Hays; and three brothers, John, Robert and Daniel.

She served as a nurse in the St. Francis Convent, a supervisor at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, a nurse supervisor at St. Joseph Infirmary in Louisville, assistant administrator/associate director of St. Joseph Infirmary in Louisville, assistant administrator of Dominican Santa Cruz (Calif.) Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital in Kokomo, Ind., administrator of St. Anne's Maternity Home in Los Angeles, hospitality staff member of Maple Mount Retreat Center in Kentucky and director of Pastoral Care of Provena Mercy Hospital in Aurora, Ill. At the time of her death she was a minister of prayer and service in the congregation.

Wherever Helen served she brought a human touch to her ministry. One example: When she served as nursing supervisor of Lourdes Hospital, she loved to make homemade ice cream for the physicians and staff. Of course, they loved it, too! With determination and simple conviction, Sister Helen always believed that wherever she was, there were the Sisters of St. Francis.

The funeral mass will be Wednesday, July 21, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Francis Convent Chapel, 200 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin, OH 44883. Burial will be in St. Francis Convent cemetery. Visitation will be today, July 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the convent chapel, where a Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, OH 44883, 419-447-3113. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Convent or St. Francis Home.

HARDINSBURG - Valeria Tate, 84, of McQuady died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Breckinridge Health Care in Hardinsburg. She attended Corinth Baptist Church and was a housewife.

Survivors include five daughters, Pat Hill, Elaine Lancaster, Diane Burton, Nancy Rhodes and Sue Haynes.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Freedom cemetery near Harned. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Freedom cemetery.

Paul Henry Waldroup

Paul Henry Waldroup, 82, of 2429 Southeastern Parkway, Owensboro, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. Born Nov. 18, 1921, in Williamsburg to the late Charles L. and Dinah Lovitt Waldroup, Mr. Waldroup was a retired machinist for Dover Elevator Manufacturing. A devoted husband and father, he lived in Cincinnati for 52 years before moving to Owensboro in March 2003. Mr. Waldroup served in the 195th Anti-Aircraft unit attached to the Second Armored Division and served in the European Theater in Normandy, Northern France, the Battle of the Bulge and the Rhineland. He was a deacon in several churches for 45 years and was a member of First Baptist Church in Owensboro. His hobbies included gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Samantha, Rachel, Ray, Charles Ivan, David and Earl Waldroup and Ruth Askins.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Myrtle Stephens Waldroup; two sons and wives, Dennis and Lee Waldroup of Owensboro and Donald and Nancy Waldroup of Roswell, Ga.; grandchildren Andy Waldroup and wife Dana of Lexington, David Waldroup of Atlanta, Daniel Waldroup of Roswell, Eric Waldroup of Owensboro, Jonathan Waldroup and Sarah Waldroup of Roswell; a brother, John Waldroup of Berea; and three sisters, Mary Banks of Westland, Mich., Clara Waldroup of Waynesville, Ohio, and Ann Barnes of Batavia, Ohio.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at First Baptist Church, with burial in Rosehill cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday and after 8:30 a.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Dora Mae Raley

LOUISVILLE - Dora Mae Raley, 79, of Louisville passed away Monday, July 12, 2004, at her home. She was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church. She volunteered at Dare to Care and also at her church.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph A. Raley; three sons, Joe (Rhonda) , Ron (Patty) and Mike (Connie) ; a sister, Gene Markert; three grandchildren, Karen Delph, Kim Medley and Brad Raley; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Resthaven Memorial Park in Louisville. The funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 14, at her church at noon. The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville, Dept. 52420, P.O. Box 36370, Louisville, KY 40233.

Norma Dean Williams Jones

Norma Dean Williams Jones, 78, formerly of Etoile, died at 4:35 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at her home at 2825 Windsor Ave., Owensboro. She was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Celina, Tenn., to the late John Alex and Lela Perl (Long) Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence M. Jones, on Dec. 25, 2001.

Surviving is her daughter, Laurel Faye Jones Gibson; a son-in-law, Dennis Leigh, and granddaughter, Alexandra Laurel-Leigh, of Owensboro; three brothers, Cecil B. and Lecil E. Williams of Bowling Green and Jerome D. Williams of Lexington; two sisters, Mary Pearl Fisher and Billie Jean Stephens of Bowling Green; six nieces; three nephews; and several cousins.

Norma Jones held bachelor's, master's and Rank I degrees from Western Kentucky University. She retired from a teaching career of 32 years that started in a one-room school at Dry Ridge and ended at Austin Tracy Elementary in Barren County. She was an active member or officeholder of NEA, KEA, KRTA, BCEA, IRA, PTA, 4-H leader, Homemakers, Democratic Women's Club, Associated Country Women of the World, Glasgow Hospice, Lioness Club and received endless awards and recognition for service to her school and community. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She loved her Lord and her schoolchildren.

All services will be at A.F. Crow and Sons Funeral Home in Glasgow. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at A.F. Crow and Sons Funeral Home. The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with burial in Caney Fork Baptist Church cemetery in Etoile. James H. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Charles R. Smith

Charles R. Smith, 74, of 213 Stockton Drive, Owensboro, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Greenville and was retired from Green River Steel Corp. as a pipefitter. He also had been a real estate agent for Home Realty Co. He was the former president and secretary of the United Steel Workers Union Local No. 4959, and had been on the board of Green River Area Federal Credit Union and the Roosevelt House. He was a member of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church. He enjoyed basketball, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Julia Lovell Smith; brothers, Roy W. Smith and Robert M. Smith; and a sister, Ann Allison Smith.

Surviving is his wife of 46 years, Carol Kendall Smith; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kim and Greg Shannon of Owensboro and Julie Smith of Madisonville; a son, Kendall Smith of Owensboro; a brother, Rodney Smith of Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren, Nathan and Brittany Wood of Madisonville, Kyle Sawyer-Smith of Owensboro and Jessica and Nicholas Shannon of Owensboro.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at Glenn Funeral Home chapel, with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after noon Saturday at the funeral home.
