Carolyn 'Peachie' Wethington

Carolyn "Peachie" Wethington, 57, of 2313 Sir Wren Court, Owensboro, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at her home. She was born June 13, 1947, to the late Clinton H. and Mary Ella Neff Butler in Daviess County. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Mrs. Wethington retired after 13 years of service of service with Green River Valley Institute where she was a medicine nurse. Her hobbies included reading, spending time with her family, playing the piano and enjoying her cats.

Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Jim Wethington; three sons and their spouses, Keith and Tammy Wethington and Brian and Tresa Wethington, all of Owensboro, and Derek and Karen Wethington of Utica; seven grandchildren, Aaron, Tyler, Nate, Jacob, Drake, Morgan and Kenton Wethington; two brothers, the Rev. Harold Butler of Louisville and Carl Butler of Lewisport; and a sister, Dot Coburn of Owensboro.

Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro, with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Macedonia Baptist Church All-Purpose Building Fund.

Holly Mendel Hankins

DUNMOR - Holly Mendel Hankins, 95, of 10825 U.S. Highway 431 South, Dunmor, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 3, 2004, at 1 a.m. at his home after a short illness. He was born Dec. 19, 1908, in Muhlenberg County, the son of Robert Hankins and Eva Harper Hankins. He was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ in Dunmor. He retired in 1970 from the Red Cap Sewing Factory in Russellville after 20 years. He worked 24 years for Beech Creek Coal Co. in Beech Creek. He carried mail on horseback from Dunmor to Rosewood at 16 years old. He played baseball until he was 40 years old. He loved University of Kentucky basketball, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, fishing and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Drexel Hankins, John Hankins, R.W. Hankins and Sam Hankins.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. from Hillcrest Church of Christ in Dunmor by Mr. Tim Childs and assisted by the Rev. Richard Allen. Burial will be in Dunmor cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Sara Elizabeth Baugh Hankins of Dunmor; a son, Paul Dean (Carolyn) Hankins of Rosewood; five grandchildren, Vickie (Keith) Peters of Memphis, Tenn., Mark (Jane) Hankins of Greenville, Tammie (Dan) Lorden of St. Louis, Phillip (Marlo) Hankins of Rosewood and Susan (Clay) White of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call today, Aug. 4, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville and Thursday, Aug. 5, after 9 a.m. at the church.

Alex H. 'Pete' Knight

DRAKESBORO - Alex H. 'Pete' Knight, 57, of 81 Knight Loop, Drakesboro, died at 1:37 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. He was born Nov. 21, 1946, in Muhlenberg County and was a member of Union Chapel General Baptist Church. He was a custodian employed by Muhlenberg County School System and formerly employed at Super-Valu. He owned and operated Knight's Garage in Drakesboro and from 1969 to 1981 was a mechanic at Henry Cisney Chevrolet in Central City.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Sharon Leah Knight; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Alan and Stacey Lynn Knight of Drakesboro; two grandchildren, Ryan Michael and Colton Layne Knight; a brother, James Henry "Jam Up" Knight of Drakesboro; and two sisters, Dorothy Lee Scharf of Millstadt, Ill., and Barbara Jean Arnold of Drakesboro.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Union Chapel General Baptist Church with the Rev. Kerry Vincent, assisted by the Rev. Walter Evitts, officiating. Burial will be in Union Chapel cemetery in Drakesboro. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home. Mr. Knight will lie in state from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Jeanie Hall Haycraft

LEWISPORT - Jeanie Hall Haycraft, 46, of Lewisport died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. She was born April 10, 1958, in Daviess County, the daughter of the late Edgar Cecil and Norma J. "Dee Dee" (Grant) Hall. She was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed flower gardening and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Dale Haycraft of Lewisport; a stepson, Scott Haycraft of Lewisport; a stepdaughter, Melissa Haycraft of Lewisport; a special daughter, Renee Erich of Lewisport; a sister, Jo Ann and her husband, Chuck, Duncan, of Lewisport; seven grandchildren, Patrick, Brandon, Xavier, Natalie, Josh, Zachary and Hayden; a niece and nephew, Todd and Allison Duncan; and two great-nieces, Mikayla and Brooklyn.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Taylor-Raymond-Spear Funeral Home, with the Rev. J. Alton Lawhorn officiating. Burial will be in Lewisport cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Franklin Joseph Neubauer

Franklin Joseph Neubauer, 93, of Owensboro died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at his home. Born Oct. 8, 1910, to the late Albert Thomas and Katherine Adelmann Neubauer, he graduated from Owensboro High School and then Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, where he received a degree in landscape architecture. Franklin was active in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) in high school and college. During World War II, he fought in the Pacific Theater and served in occupied Japan with the Army, earning the rank of captain. After the war, he served in the reserves and retired as a lieutenant colonel.

Franklin lived and worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in a variety of states throughout the country. Later, he worked for the National Park Service, where his training as a landscape architect was of great assistance in planning how the parks would be developed (where the roads, buildings, utilities and plants should be located) . Eventually, he was promoted to the main park service staff office until his retirement.

Mr. Neubauer returned to Owensboro to live and continue his passion for landscape architecture and gardening. He has been a longtime member of Zion United Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an older brother, Fred Tyruf Neubauer; and an older sister, Margaret Flaherty.

He is survived by a brother, George L. Neubauer of Denver; a sister, Emma Cuttino of Owensboro; two nephews, Mike Neubauer of Denver and Bill Neubauer of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home chapel, with burial near his loved ones in Rosehill cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from noon to 2 p.m. Friday.

Margaret Vandruff Shepperd

Margaret Vandruff Shepperd, 92, of 5050 Back Square Drive, Owensboro died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Oct. 28, 1911, to the late Ottley and Mattie Hackett Vandruff in McLean County. She was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. She worked in the Pentagon while her husband was in the service and had lived in California as a child.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Shepperd; her sister, Vivian Hill; and her brother, Douglas Vandruff.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Settle United Methodist Church, 201 E. Fourth St., Owensboro, KY 42303.

Phil Brown

CLOVERPORT - Phil Brown, 59, of Cloverport died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, in Norton Hospital in Louisville. He was born Oct. 16, 1944, in Louisville. He was deputy sheriff in Breckinridge County for 20 years and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Brown; two sons, Chris Brown and Jeff Brown; and a brother, Jimmy Brown.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace Funeral Home in Cloverport. Burial: Cloverport cemetery. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donald R. 'Don' Hatton
08/13/04

Donald R. "Don" Hatton, 65, of 4420 Rome Parkway, Owensboro, went to be with Jesus Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on Aug. 26, 1938, in Louisville. He retired in 2001 from National Southwire Aluminum, where he was a maintenance electrician. He was a member of Family Worship Center, where he was a deacon. He was a graduate of Valley High School, attended Ahrens Trade School and graduated from Jefferson County Vocational School. He was a ham radio operator and was the owner and operator of Audiovision Televideo Productions. He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Hatton.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Johnson Hatton; two daughters, Denisa Kingrea of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Lori Register of Fayetteville, N.C.; grandchildren, Zak Kingrea, Lauren Nicole Kingrea, Lyndsay Madison Kingrea, Kaylee Suzanne Register, Hadley Dawn Register and Brooklyn Thompson; his mother, Addie Price Hatton of Louisville; three brothers, Gilbert Hatton of Bardstown, Ken Hatton of Mount Washington and Dan Hatton of Denver; and two sisters, Brenda Chesser and Cheri Bailey, both of Louisville.

Services are at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Family Worship Center in Owensboro. Burial is in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sorgho. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Family Worship Center, Youth/Children's Outreach, 1220 Center St., Owensboro, KY 42303.

Marie M. Mason

Marie M. Mason, 76, of 2535 W. 6th St., Owensboro, died at 6 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at her home. She was born May 10, 1928, in Detroit and was a homemaker and member of St. Stephen Cathedral. She enjoyed bingo, TV and church activities.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Richard H. Mason; a son, Richard "Dickie" Mason of Owensboro; a brother, William E. McBride of Owensboro; a sister, Loriane Metallo of Orlando, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Cathedral. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery. The Rev. John Vaughan will officiate.

Mary Edith (Osborne) Allen

Mary Edith (Osborne) Allen, 86, of 1411 Parrish Court, Owensboro, devoted wife and mother, went home to be with Jesus at 1:22 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born July 4, 1918, in Owensboro to the late William Charles and Mary Eva Mason Osborne. She was a Catholic and a charter member of St. Pius X Parish, a longtime member of St. Stephen Cathedral and a member of the Altar Sodality. She was preceded in death by her husband, Iven Allen Jr., on Feb. 6, 1945, who was declared missing in action, and later deceased, following the sinking of his ship, the S.S. Peter Silvester, in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Perth, Australia. She was also preceded in death by her son, William Iven Allen, on March 27, 1942; as well as by her brothers, Robert Mason Osborne, William Charles Osborne Jr., Joseph Clifton Osborne, John Elliott Osborne; and sisters, Margaret Ann Osborne and Nanette Elizabeth Isbell.

Mrs. Allen loved traveling, camping, motorcycling, sewing, gardening, pets and being with family and friends. She loved all whom she met and enjoyed their hugs and embraces. She was devoted to Mary, the mother of God, and was a regular viewer of EWTN.

Survivors include her son, Larry Joseph Allen of Owensboro; two sisters, Betty Marie Sullivan of Cincinnati and Virginia Louise Glahn of Owensboro. She had several nieces, nephews and cousins, whom she dearly loved and to whom she was known as "Mert" or "Aunt Mert."

Visitation is at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, with prayers at 6:30 p.m., and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be conducted at Blessed Sacrament Chapel, 602 Sycamore St., on Sunday, Aug. 8, at noon with interment at Resurrection cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Blessed Sacrament Chapel, 602 Sycamore St., Owensboro, KY 42301.
