Bruce A. Parkey, Mays Lick farmer
Bruce A. Parkey loved farming, and after years as a construction worker, returned to Mason County to work his own farm.
Mr. Parkey, 68, of Mays Lick, died Friday night in University Medical Center, Lexington, of injuries suffered earlier that day when his tractor turned over, pinning him beneath it.
"He was gone for three and a half hours, but I thought he was working with one of our tenants," said Mr. Parkey's wife, Johnnine Haro Parkey. "I kept waiting for him to come home for his lunch."
Mrs. Parkey said her dog, Sally, who had been with Mr. Parkey, returned to the house, barking, but she did not make a connection that there had been an accident. A tenant later found Mr. Parkey, with the dog waiting nearby.
Mr. Parkey retired as a construction worker five years ago, his wife said. "He worked on a lot of different jobs, on the big buildings in Detroit. He was a member of the carpenters' union," she said.
After retirement Mr. Parkey came back to Mays Lick to work a 105-acre farm. "He worked hard here, harder than he did in Michigan. But he loved it," said Mrs. Parkey.
"We didn't have help some of the time so we worked the farm ourselves," Mrs. Parkey said.
Mr. Parkey was an avid bowler, especially in Michigan, his wife said. "He bowled in leagues five nights a week. He won a lot of trophies."
Mr. Parkey was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons, Wayne Parkey and Garry Parkey, both of Alabama, and Larry Parkey of Mays Lick; a daughter, Nancy Connell of Alabama; his stepfather, Hank Boweciz of Beckley, Mich.; a brother, Frank Parkey of Cass City, Mich.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mays Lick Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Mt. Olivet, Ky., 41064.
