FORDSVILLE - Owanna Pitts, 85, of Fordsville died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore. She was a housewife, a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include her husband, Pershing Pitts; and three sons, Bill Pitts, Carl Pitts and Floyd Pitts.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville. Burial: Pleasant Grove cemetery in Fordsville. Visitation: From 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Bridget Cobb Ruby

LIVERMORE - Bridget Cobb Ruby, 32, of Livermore died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. Bridget was born May 31, 1972, in Daviess County. She was a graduate of McLean County High School and was a certified nursing assistant at Riverside Manor Health Care Center in Calhoun. Bridget attended Livermore Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with her dog, Mazzie.

Survivors include her ex-husband, Allen Ruby of Livermore; her father, Charles "Bubby" Cobb of Livermore; her mother and stepfather, Katrina Ann and Willie Fulkerson of Island; a sister, Tina Chambers of Buttonsberry; a stepbrother, Jeff Fulkerson of Calhoun; three aunts; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a great-niece.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel, with the Rev. J.W. Haire and the Rev. Timmy Camplin officiating. Burial will be in Island Community cemetery. Friends may visit with Bridget's family from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until time of services Friday at Musters in Livermore.

Evea Elizabeth Sweeney Stinnett

Evea Elizabeth Sweeney Stinnett, 88, of Maceo died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Heartland Villa Nursing Home in Lewisport. Born in Evansville on Oct. 18, 1915, Mrs. Stinnett was a homemaker and member of Yelvington Baptist Church. She enjoyed oil painting, playing the piano, gardening, sewing and quilting, fishing and farming and she was a great cook. Mrs. Stinnett was preceded in death by her husband, John Allen Stinnett, in 1985.

She is survived by three sons, Bruce Stinnett and Lanny Stinnett, both of Yelvington, and Max Stinnett of Bowling Green; a daughter, Sue Toler of Yelvington; five grandchildren, Todd Stinnett, Beth Mullins, Lisa Bryant, Allen Stinnett and Stephanie Bivins; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at Glenn Funeral Home, with burial in the Stinnett Family cemetery in Yelvington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Friday.

Rena Iona Hill Watson

Rena Iona Hill Watson, 101, of Leisure Years Nursing Home died there Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004. She was born in Utica, retired from the Delbert Glenn family and was a member of Fourth Street Baptist Church. She was a former member of Fourth Street Baptist Church King's Daughters, Sunbeams and Ushers. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Sonny) Watson; a sister, Emily Hill; and three brothers, Abraham, Clark and Dave Hill.

Survivors include a nephew, Darrell Montgomery of Las Vegas; two nieces, Judith Meriwether of Owensboro and Linda Long of Glenarden, Md.; and a foster sister, Etta Sutherland (Richard).

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Fourth Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Donald Ray 'Johnny' Harkins

GREENVILLE - Donald Ray "Johnny" Harkins, 62, of 516 Bethel Place, Greenville, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 14, 2004, at 12:40 p.m. in Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born Nov. 29, 1941, in Muhlenberg County, the son of Lyndell Ray Harkins and Ruby Elizabeth Browning Harkins. He was a member of Sharon General Baptist Church in Greenville and was an Army veteran. He was a member of Pond River Masonic Lodge No. 244 in Greenville. He retired from TVA Paradise Steam Plant in 2003 as a machinist foreman after 41 years.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday morning, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m. from Lee cemetery, Bancroft Road, in Greenville, by Mr. Paul Moore and Mr. Robert Gardner. Masonic services will be conducted tonight, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Faye Carolyn Turner Harkins of Greenville; a son, John Harkins of Greenville; two daughters, Stephanie Eaves and Elizabeth Schmidt, both of Greenville; four granddaughters, Emily Eaves, Kate Eaves, Nola Schmidt and Catherine Schmidt; a brother, Billy (Betty) Harkins of Greenville; and three nieces, Lori Buttrum, Susan Fitzhugh and Andrea Hooper.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary Frances Newbolt King

Mary Frances Newbolt King, 81, of 2033 Wimbledon Court died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. Born in Daviess County a daughter of the late Roy and Julia Newton Newbolt, she was a founding member of the Riverside and St. Andrew Presbyterian churches, having taught Sunday school for more than 25 years, later attended First Presbyterian Church and retired from General Electric, after which she served as a volunteer at Owensboro City Hall and the Green River Teaching Center. A loving and caring mother, her three loves were her faith, her family and her friends. Mrs. King enjoyed caring for others and working with her hands at quilting, painting, sewing, gardening and other crafts. She made a mean gravy, awesome cherry delight and a sensational chocolate pie. Her husband, P.J. King Jr., preceded her in death in 1995.

She is survived by her son, P.J. King III and his wife, Hilda, of Apopka, Fla.; her daughter, Nancy King Schmeal and her husband, Charles, of Owensboro; her grandchildren, Jamie Schmeal Wellman of Nashville, Kellie Schmeal of Owensboro, James "Jay" King of Margate, Fla., and Mitzi King Toxey of Apopka; her great-grandchildren, Thomas King, Georgia Mary King and Michael Toxey, all of Florida; and her brother, R.W. Newbolt of Bend, Ore.

Services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and Glenn Funeral Home and from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Richland Baptist Church cemetery in McLean County. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Help Office of Owensboro, the Osteoporosis Foundation or the Lupus Foundation.

Gertrude 'Betty' Johnson

Gertrude "Betty" Johnson, 81, of Whitesville died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Bon Harbor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Gerald Johnson, on April 30, 1996; and two sons, David Leon Johnson, in August 1967, and Thomas Leroy Johnson, in February 1996.

She is survived by her children, Michael Wayne Johnson of Owensboro, Gerald Anthony Johnson of Philpot, John William Johnson of South Carrolton, Mary Berdelle Howard of Whitesville, Marrial Ann Nilsson of Olympia, Wash., and Angelita Marie Beard of Colleyville, Texas; a brother, Billy Wright of Owensboro; and three sisters, Birdie Wedding of Philpot and Alma Montgomery and Irene Gray, both of Owensboro.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Whitesville. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation is after 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, and after 9 a.m. Friday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Alzheimer's Association.

HARDINSBURG - Francis M. Matthews, 80, of Hardinsburg died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Breckinridge Health Care. He was a Marine Corps veteran, a member of St. Romuald Catholic Church and retired from Civil Service.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; four sons, Kenneth Matthews, Phillip Matthews, Doug Matthews and Carlos Matthews; five daughters, Marie Curran, Lori Howard, Jenny Camp, Linda Stinnett and Anita Sullivan; and a sister, Sister Mary Angela Matthews.

Services: 11 a.m. today at St. Romuald Catholic Church. Burial: St. Romuald cemetery. Visitation: After 8:30 a.m. today at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. Memorial contributions: St. Romuald School.

Lillie Reed Phillips

VERSAILLES - Lillie Reed Phillips, 82, of Greenville, widow of Wendell Phillips, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital. Born in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Bart Reed and Lora Hamm Slugantz. She was a member of Green's Chapel Church and a retired employee of Ford Motor Co. She was preceded in death by her son, Jack E. Coffman.

She is survived by three grandchildren, Christian, Victoria and Taylor Coffman; a stepdaughter, Evelyn Buss of Greenville; a stepson, Ron Phillips of Bowling Green; six sisters, Gladys (Jim) Sutherland and Clara (Fred) Lewis, both of Versailles, Florence Rice of Lexington, Lora Belle (Amos) Rice of Cynthiana and Nellie Holland and Myrtle Carl, both of Versailles; three brothers, Tom (Jewell) Slugantz, Johnny (Faye) Slugantz and Kenneth Slugantz, all of Versailles; and two special friends, Fonnie Williams and Ruby Robinson.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. EST Thursday at Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, in Versailles. Burial will follow in Lexington cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Casketbearers will be Larry and Johnny Sutherland, Paul and Mike Rice, Keith and Steve Slugantz, Jai Lewis and Bobby Carl. Honorary casketbearers will be Ronnie Phillips and Lou Buss.

Rita Darlene B. Morton

Rita Darlene B. Morton, 55, of 315 Dieterle Drive North, Owensboro, passed away Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born in Ohio County and had worked at Green River Comprehensive Care and was a licensed practical nurse at several nursing homes. She was a member of the Anointed Church of the Living God, was on the council for the Owensboro Housing Authority and was a youth Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Mayo Morton, in 1986; a sister, Bonnie Bennett; and three brothers.

Surviving is a son, Ryan Morton of Owensboro; three daughters, Christonyia Hardison of Hampstead, N.C., and Juanita "Tiger" Morton and Linda Graddick, both of Chicago; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three brothers, Kenneth Bartlett of Owensboro, Roy Bartlett of Hartford and Otis Ray Bartlett of Beaver Dam; seven sisters, Ova Rhoades, Catherine Davis, Ethel Rhoades, Mattye Shelton and Lola Mae Goodman, all of Owensboro, Cova Rogers of Flat Rock, Ind., and Ernestine Evans of Hartford; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at Glenn Funeral Home chapel, with burial in Elmwood cemetery. Visitation will be after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Rita B. Morton Memorial Fund, c/o Sondra Greenwell, 4275 Greenbriar Road, Utica, KY 42376.

Bryan Edward Nemitz

Bryan Edward Nemitz, 62, of 3898 Thruston-Dermont Road, Owensboro, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at his home. He was born in New Haven, Conn., on Aug. 14, 1942, to the late Donald F. Nemitz and Ardella Beatrice Webster. He had been a service technician for seven years at Don Moore Chevrolet Cadillac. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the men's bowling association.

Survivors include his wife of nine years, Shirley C. Nemitz; a son, Bobby McKay of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Traci Madison of Richmond; three grandchildren; two brothers, Bryce Nemitz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Bruce Nemitz of Blowing Rock, N.C.; a sister, Ardella Ross of Chantilly, Va.; and his stepfather, John L. Webster of Richmond.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
