Joseph M. Pagan Jr.

Joseph M. Pagan Jr., 83, of 2048 Viola Gardens, Owensboro, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Leisure Years Nursing Home. The Daviess County native was the son of the late Joseph M. Sr. and Artie Potts Pagan. He was a member of the Southside Church of Christ, the All-American Club and the Panther Express at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Mr. Pagan had been a fan of Kentucky Wesleyan men's basketball since the college moved to Owensboro in 1951. He was a World War II Army veteran and a Kentucky Colonel. He retired from Texas Gas as a purchasing agent after 42 years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Emma Jean Pagan; his son and wife, Rowland and Bonnie Pagan of Lexington; a brother, Shirley C. Pagan of Owensboro; and two grandsons, Jon Paul Pagan of Lexington and Clay Pagan of Isle of Palms, S.C.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Glenn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today and after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to KWC men's basketball program.

Awildia May Smallwood

HARTFORD - Awildia May Smallwood, 67, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at her home. She was born in Gladepark, Colo., and was a housewife and attended Pleasant Ridge Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Smallwood.

Survivors include two sons, Monroe Smallwood of Hartford and Bill Smallwood of Elizabethtown; five daughters, Betty Jean Phillips of Beaver Dam, Nancy Mae Blair and Susan Smallwood, both of Hartford, Marilyn Sigler of Lewisport and Carolyn Smallwood of Lavernia, Texas; 19 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Jeanine Forrest; and two brothers, Sylvester and Orelia Stettnisch.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Duke-Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Hartford. Burial will follow at Mount Moriah cemetery near the Taffy community. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until funeral time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Elvia H. Vincent

Elvia H. Vincent, 83, of 2557 Arbor Terrace, Owensboro, passed away Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at the home of her daughter, with whom she was living. She was born in Muhlenberg County and was retired after 40 years with the General Electric Co. She was a member of Hall Street Baptist Church and enjoyed quilting and spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Vincent, in 1981; a son, Michael Norris, in 1973; and a daughter, Vickie Vincent, in 1973.

Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Anderson of Owensboro and Judith Quisenberry Buck of LaBelle, Fla.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Nola Draper of Corydon; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at Glenn Funeral Home chapel, with burial following at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from to 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 4770 Covert Ave., Suite No. 211, Evansville, IN 47714.

Sylvia Wallace Vaughn

HARTFORD - Sylvia Wallace Vaughn, 96, of Hartford died at 2:55 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Ohio County Hospital. She was born June 24, 1908 in Butler County to the late Richard Wallace and Lucy Castleberry Wallace. She retired from ASCS Office Ohio County as a clerk and was a member of Hartford Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Vaughn on March 5, 1969.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Plummer of Beaver Dam; one grandson, Dr. Vaughn Plummer of Owensboro; great-grandchildren, Chadwanna Maggard of Beaver Dam, Melodie Baggarly of Murfreesboro, Tenn., William Plummer and J.B. Plummer, both of Owensboro; great-great-grandchildren, Mary Ward, Ruby Baker and Jesse Ray Baker, all of Beaver Dam; and one sister, Elizabeth Johnson of Richland, Ind.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery in Hartford. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hartford Baptist Church Nursery, 415 Liberty St., Hartford, KY 42347.

Tom Patton

Tom Patton, 67, of Utica died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on Dec. 2, 1936, in Daviess County and retired from Mayfair Pharmacy where he delivered medicine for 22 years. He was an U.S. Army veteran, a member of Utica Baptist Church and was an avid Kentucky Wesleyan fan. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Patton, George Patton and Guy Patton; and two sisters, Mary Saunders and Louise Barlow.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Thelma Patton; a brother, Henry Patton and his wife Ceclia of Owensboro; a sister, Shirley Early of Charleston, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Utica Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Feargin and Dr. Richard Sams officiating. Burial will be in Utica cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Utica Baptist Church Mission Funds, Utica, KY 42376.

Ruth Margaret Miethke

Ruth Margaret Miethke, age 78, of 5058 Backsquare Drive, Owensboro, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Hillcrest Healthcare Center in Owensboro. Mrs. Miethke was retired from Intermatic Corp. in Spring Grove, Ill. She worked in the office at Park Regency. She enjoyed cooking for her friends, flower gardening and bird watching. She had cockatiels as pets. She was preceded in death by a son, Carl Novak in 1997; a brother, Ted Mueller in 1984; and a sister, Laverne Aguiere in 1995.

Survivors include her sons, Jim Novak of Milwaukee, Chuck Novak and wife Nancy of Kenosha, Wis., Stan Wegrzyn and wife Debbie of Owensboro and Richard Wegrzyn and wife Kathy of Madison, Wis.; and a daughter, Patricia Wyka of Twin Lakes, Wis.; two sisters, Claudia Harold of Hanover Park, Ill., and Sylvia Motyka of Chicago; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

There is no visitation. Services will be held at a future date in Wisconsin. Glenn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LaDona Morris Malone

GREENVILLE - LaDona Morris Malone, 69, of Greenville died Saturday night, Sept. 11, 2004, in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital. She was born Sept. 24, 1934, the daughter of David and Norma Gray Morris. She was a member of Luzerne Baptist Church and the BellSouth Pioneers and Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5478. She retired in 1993 from BellSouth as a second line supervisor after 40 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; a nephew, Timmy "Bear" Evitts in 1989; and a stepbrother, Billy Wayne Gary.

She is survived by one sister, Leona (Truck) Evitts of Greenville; one niece, Stephanie Ledure of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and six nephews, Randy Gray of Henderson, Tony Gray of Henderson, Chris Gray of Henderson, Brent Gray of Henderson, Chris Evitts of Greenville and Don Newcom of Henderson.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at 3 p.m. from Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville by the Rev. Joe Pharris. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens in Powderly. Friends may call on Tuesday morning, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville.

Carlos King

CENTERTOWN - Carlos King, 86, of Centertown died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Professional Care Health & Rehab Center in Hartford. He was born in Centertown, was a mechanic and coal miner, was a member of Central Grove Baptist Church, a member of Centertown Masonic Lodge 714 F&AM and was a member of Centertown Volunteer Fire Department for many years, several of those years he was assistant chief. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dianne King; and a brother, Gene King.

Survivors include his wife, Abby Lee Tichenor King; three sisters, Ruby Elmore of Hartford, Mary Stone of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Helen Ware of Centertown.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Duke-Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Centertown. Burial will be in Central Grove cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until funeral time on Tuesday. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Susan Countzler Carey

GREENVILLE - Susan Countzler Carey, 50, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Tulane University Medical Center due to respiratory arrest. Mrs. Carey was a native of Greenville and a resident of Slidell, La., for the past 20 years. She attended the University of Kentucky School of Pharmacy and was currently a pharmacist at Eckards. Mrs. Carey was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Slidell and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary of Slidell.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Bradford Carey of Slidell; her parents, Richard Countzler and Martha R. Countzler of Greenville; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Sandy Countzler of Owensboro; and one sister and brother-in-law, Anne and David McKnight of Durham, N.C.

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. from Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Friends may call at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, Sept. 15 at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville.

James 'Jim' L. Thompson Sr.

HANSON - James "Jim" L. Thompson Sr., 65, of 926 Veterans Way, Hanson, formerly of Owensboro, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004. A native of Curdsville, he was born Sept. 25, 1938, to the late James T. Thompson and Doris Cooper Thompson, who survives. Jim was a veteran of the United States Navy and the U.S. Army National Guard, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans, former treasurer for American Legion Post 6 and enjoyed coin collecting, NASCAR, fishing and history.

Survivors in addition to his mother, Doris Cooper Thompson, include his children, Paul Ray Johnson of Calhoun, Ava M. Johnson of Calhoun, James L. Thompson Jr. of Bettendorf, Iowa, Joyce Brazzel of Sacramento, Jon W. Thompson of Masonville, Billy G. Thompson of Nashville and Michele Clark of Calhoun; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson; six sisters and one brother, Janet King of Owensboro, Shirley Sacra of Fresno, Calif., Linda Craig, Lena Henning, Carolyn Nevitt, Bobby Thompson and Elaine Thompson, all of Owensboro.

Visitation with the Thompson family will be on today from 3 to 8 p.m. and Monday from noon until 2 p.m. at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro. Funeral services for Mr. Thompson will be on Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at 2 p.m. at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro with Chaplin Sam Beeny officiating. A private graveside service with military honors administered by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 696 will be held at Resurrection cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Western Kentucky Veterans Center Activities Department, 926 Veterans Drive, Hanson, KY 42413.
