Earl E. Connor

Earl E. Connor, 80, of 1708 Shawnee Drive, Owensboro, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Jackson County, Ill., on April 21, 1924, to the late Louis Arden and Anna (Brantley) Connor. He was a member of Pate Chapel Church in Murphysboro, Ill., and attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He received a degree in merchandising from St. Louis University. He retired after 54 years of employment with International Shoe, Inc. He was the founder of Oney's Shoes and Oney's Apartments and operated both for 25 years. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Iona Connor; two sons, Daniel Connor of Branson, Mo., and Rodger Connor of Owensboro; two daughters, Hazel Juanita Davis of Hawaii and Kathy Bass-King of Springfield, Mo.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be published by the at a later date. James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro is in charge of arrangements. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Hospice & Palliative Care of the Ohio Valley, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.

The Rev. Howard T. Moody

The Rev. Howard T. Moody, 81, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004. The memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 120 W. Park Ave., Tallahassee, Fla., 32301. He was born in Jeffersontown. During the 1940s, he graduated from high school and then received his B.A. degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College. He later obtained his bachelor of divinity degree from Candler School of Theology, Emory Divinity School, and his masters of arts in Christian education from Scarritt College in Nashville. He has taken post-graduate courses from Vanderbilt University, Iowa State University and Louisville Presbyterian Seminary.

The Rev. Moody has served in a number of different capacities. He studied Portuguese so that he could serve as a chaplain to the Instituto Porto Alegre in Brazil. He served at the Methodist school called I.P.A. in Porto Alegre and pastored churches in Santo Alegre and Santo Luiz in the western interior of Brazil. In 1953, the Rev. Moody returned to the United States to participate in additional training. It was then that he met Christine Puckett at Wesley Community House in Louisville. They were soon married so they could return to Brazil as missionaries. Because of health problems, they were unable to return. The Rev. Moody and his wife continued working in the missionary field. Together they served as the director and a program director at Yuma Mission Reservation in Yuma, Ariz.

The Rev. Moody returned to Kentucky in the late 1950s and continued to pastor a number of churches in Hawesville, Rumsey, Thruston and Livermore United Methodist churches in the Louisville Conference. He also served as director of Town and Country Work at Kentucky Wesleyan College for 15 years. It was while at KWC that he authored several articles for the Methodist Church. He was particularly proud that he was asked to speak at the Fifth Aerospace Institute for Religious Leaders in 1965 in Indianola, Iowa, on the "The Ministerial Call - An Historical Perspective, " when Dr. Wernher von Braun was also on the program.

It was in the early 1980s that the Rev. Moody pastored Berlin and Wesley Chapels in the South Georgia Conference and Calvary United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, Fla. While pastoring at Calvary United Methodist Church, the Rev. Moody retired with 43 years of service to the Methodist Church.

Mr. Moody is survived by his wife Christine and five children - three sons and two daughters; sons and their families, Keith Matthew and Tammy Moody and their daughter Keightly, Craig Stephen and Lisa Moody and their daughters Nicolette and Lauren, and Kirk Moody and Lori and their sons Jason, Paul, Austin, Coleman and Jordan and their daughter, Skylar; daughters and their families, Elaine M. and Ron Berry and their daughter and son-in-law Cristin and Robert Whitaker and son John, and Sandi and Bob Cundiff and their son Logan, and daughter Madison. The Rev. Moody also has two younger brothers, Nelson and Richard Moody; and his sister-in-law, Eleanor Puckett.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tallahassee Memorial Foundation designated to: Parkinson Center, 1331 E. 6th Ave., Tallahassee, FL 32303 or Big Ben Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308-5428.

Raymond Spalding Payne

Raymond Spalding Payne, 90, of Owensboro died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Leisure Years Nursing Home. Born Sept. 21, 1914, in Knottsville, Mr. Payne was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral and was retired from grounds maintenance at Windridge Country Club. Mr. Payne enjoyed farming, was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Disabled American Veterans and VFW. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Ward Payne; a son, Franklin Eugene Payne; and two sisters, Anna Edge and Bernice Edge.

Mr. Payne is survived by a daughter, Margaret Ellen Payne of Owensboro; three sons, James "J.C" Payne of Owensboro, Larry R. Payne of Bowling Green and Charles F. Payne of Philpot; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Rose Lee Howard of Whitesville.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. William Catholic Church in Knottsville, with burial in Resurrection cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Post 696. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 8:30 a.m. Friday. Prayers will be at 5:30 p.m. this evening.

Dezester Jean Evans Dukes

Dezester Jean Evans Dukes, 70, of Owensboro died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at her home. Born Jan. 29, 1934, in Butler County, Mrs. Dukes was a homemaker and member of Owensboro Church of Christ. She was an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvie Evans and Beulah Henderson Evans; a brother, Jarvis Evans; and a sister, Ada Moore.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Jewel Dean Dukes; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Janet Dukes of Owensboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Kenneth Lutz of Evansville; five grandchildren, Danielle Kirk Overfield, Julie Christine Kirk Miller, Amy Dukes, Eric Dukes and Ashley Dukes; seven great-grandchildren, Kassandra, Juwan, Emily, Tiffani, Kayla, Kaylee and Andrew; a brother, Troy Evans of Owensboro; and her caregiver, Valerie Norris.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at Glenn Funeral Home, with burial in Cherry Grove cemetery in Weir. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday.

Charles H. Ramsey

DYER - Charles H. Ramsey, 68, of Dyer died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown. He was a farmer and attended Vertrees Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Ramsey.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Hudson cemetery. Visitation: From 1:30 to 8 p.m. today and after 8:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Constantine United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Jerry Bennett Delaney

HARTFORD - Jerry Bennett Delaney, 70, of Hartford died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Ohio County Hospital in Hartford. He was born in Ohio County to Bennett and Eula Delaney. He retired as a mail carrier from Hartford Post Office after 32 years and was a member of No Creek United Methodist Church in Hartford and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Hilda Adkins Delaney; a son, Jerry Delaney II of Hartford; three daughters, Thresa Daugherty and Sandy Culbertson, both of Hartford, and Becky Mullen of Owensboro; a brother, Bob Delaney of Beaver Dam; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services are at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will be in Carson cemetery in Hartford. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 11, and from 9 a.m. to services Friday at the funeral home.

Elmer H. Nalley

Elmer H. Nalley, 89, of Utica died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born June 15, 1915, in McLean County to the late C.C. and Sally (Thornsberry) Nalley. He was a retired farm machinery salesman for O'Bryan Farm Service and a retired farmer. He was an active member of Utica Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 43 years and was a men's Sunday school teacher. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post No. 9. He was a former member of Daviess County Lions Club. He was preceded in death by a brother, Winston Nalley.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Dorothy O. Nalley; two daughters, Virginia A. Guerrero and husband, Michael, of San Antonio and June King and her husband, David, of Anchorage; four grandchildren, Sean Guerrero of Midland, Texas, and Aaron Guerrero of Houston and Chris King and Meredith King, both of Anchorage; a great-grandson, Reid Guerrero of Midland; two sisters, Alice McClure and Edith Tanner, both of Owensboro; three nieces and a nephew; and two special friends, Patrick and Brenda Guenther.

Services are at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Utica cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Utica Baptist Church, P.O. Box 8, Utica, KY 42376.

Della Stewart Carman

HARDINSBURG - Della Stewart Carman, 95, of Hardinsburg died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at her residence. She was a homemaker and member of Sample United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Morris Carman; and a daughter, Jeanette Hall.

UNION STAR - Beverly Jean Martin, 56, of Union Star died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was also a sales representative for Combined Insurance and a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church.

Survivors include her parents, D.M. and Nancy Martin; a sister, Frankie Bilinski; and two brothers, Kenneth Martin and Bob Martin.

CLOVERPORT - Mary D. Armes, 83, of Medco Center of Hardinsburg, formerly of Cloverport, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Medco Center. She was a member of Cloverport Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Glen Edward Armes, James Robert Armes, Johnnie Miller Armes and William David Armes; a daughter, Bessie Jane Richards; a brother, Jim Obenchain; and a sister, Maggie Nash.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Cloverport Baptist Church. Burial: McQuady cemetery. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8 a.m. Saturday at Wallace Funeral Home in Cloverport.

FORDSVILLE - Margaret Free Cummings, 81, of Fordsville died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Fordsville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Ohio County, was retired from housekeeping at Fordsville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Decker of Fordsville and Donna Hardesty and husband, Bruce, of Madisonville; a granddaughter, Dee Dee Johnson and husband, Scott, of Beechmont; a stepgranddaughter, Kristy Statts and husband, David, of Owensboro; a great-grandson, Cameron Johnson of Beechmont; and a stepgreat-granddaughter, Kisten Statts of Owensboro.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville, with burial in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Ohio County. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
