Charles Eldon 'Charlie' Smith

HENDERSON - Charles Eldon "Charlie" Smith, 73, of Henderson died at 11 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at his home. Mr. Smith was a member of Immanuel Baptist Temple, a Korean War veteran and one of 17 survivors to walk off Pork Chop Hill. He was a retired oil field worker and a retired state tollbooth operator. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Elaine Mitchell Smith, in 2002; and his son, Anthony Baldwin, in 1973.

Survivors include a daughter, Vickie Falloway of Owensboro; two sons, Mitch Smith and Stacy Smith, both of Henderson; a sister, Helen Harper of Henderson; a brother, Ted Smith of Fairborn, Ohio; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Tapp Funeral Home in Henderson, with Brother Jerry Pearcy officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Henderson. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 26, and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to American Heart Association or to Boy Scouts of America. Full military rites will be conducted by the American Legion, Worsham Post No. 40.

Rufus Glenn Stanley

GREENVILLE - Rufus Glenn Stanley, 49, of 12516 Kentucky 175 South, Greenville, died suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at 1:58 p.m. in Crittenden County Hospital in Marion of a heart attack. He was born Oct. 10, 1955, in Muhlenberg County, the son of William Rufus Stanley and Barbara Jean Mayes Stanley. He was a meat councilor for Food Giant Corp. for 33 years. He was preceded in death by his father, William Rufus Stanley, in 1977.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m. from Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville, by the Rev. Tom Stovall. Burial will be in Yeargins Chapel cemetery in Graham.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara Jean Mayes Stanley of Greenville; two sons, Donavin (Brittany) Stanley and Scott Stanley, both of Greenville; a daughter, Amy Stanley of Barbaton, Ohio; a grandchild, Brayden Stanley; a brother, William Thomas Stanley of Greenville; and eight sisters, Brenda Jackson of Louisville, Beatrice Cornette of Murray, Brooksie Dukes of Greenville, Mary Jeanetta Kelly of Greenville, Connie Marie Slaughters of Clarksville, Tenn., Cindy Elain Polson of Grand Prairie, Texas, Angel Darlene Taylor of Hazel and Lisa Gail Willis of Columbia.

Friends may call Saturday, Nov. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Hazel Tyson Winters

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. - Hazel Tyson Winters, 86, of Clifton Park died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at The Harbor at Clifton Park. Hazel was born in the Pleasant Hill community in Muhlenberg County. She was the daughter of the late Bert and Margery (Green) Tyson. Hazel was a graduate of Graham High School and a member of First Baptist Church of Central City. After her marriage, she and her family lived in various locations throughout the United States prior to returning to live in Central City from 1958 to 2003. She continued to enjoy traveling all of her life. In 2003, she moved to Clifton Park to be near her son and his family. She loved to watch the birds, squirrels and chipmunks at the bird feeders outside the windows, and she especially enjoyed the beautiful fall colors this year.

Hazel cared for her family and raised her son with all the love a wife and mother can give. She was married to Clarence Winters until his death in 1986. Surviving are her son, Ron and his wife, Gail, and their son, Ethan, all of Clifton Park; her sister, Audrey Ocheltree of Chula Vista, Calif.; her brother, Juel Tyson of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Winters family has appreciated the sensitive care and friendship given to Hazel and the kindness extended to her family by the staff at The Harbor at Clifton Park, and by the staff and volunteers of The Community Hospice of Saratoga. Hazel considered the staff at The Harbor to be part of her extended family. In return, they have the memory of her charming manners and her positive outlook on life.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Central City. Visitation is at 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Capital District Chapter, 85 Watervliet, Ave., Albany, NY 12206 or to The Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Velva Jean Harder

FORDSVILLE - Velva Jean Harder, 69, of Fordsville died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. She was born in Breckinridge County and was a homemaker and a member of Fordsville Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Jean Harder, in 1966.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Harder of Fordsville; a son, Douglas Harder and wife, Lori, of Fordsville; and four grandchildren, Robbie Harder and wife, Eve, Sarah Hedges and husband, Matt, all of Owensboro, and Riley Hinton and James Harder, both of Fordsville.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fordsville Baptist Church, with burial in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Ohio County. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

J.C. Howard

IRVINGTON - J.C. Howard, 67, of Irvington died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at his home. He retired as a concrete contractor.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Caringer; two daughters, Tammie Nix and Kristy Caringer; a brother, Freeman Howard; and three sisters, Juanita West, Deloris Blakeman and Imojene Norris.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Freedom cemetery near Harned. Visitation: From 3:30 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

George Bernard Miles Sr.

George Bernard Miles Sr., 84, of 3238 E. 10th St., Owensboro, died at 9:20 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born June 4, 1920, in Knottsville to William Ivo Miles and Katie Dell Mattingly Miles and retired as a self-employed restaurant owner and caterer who owned George's Diner. He was a salesman for 12 years at Sears, Roebuck & Co. and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and past president of TPA. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and raising pure breed animals. He had a love of cooking and reading. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe, Willie Ray, Earnest and Virgil Miles; two sisters, Katie Lou Bivins and Myrtle Geary; and a grandson, Kevin Michael Miles.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Anna Louise Miles; a son, George B. Miles Jr. of Owensboro; six daughters, Brenda Thompson and her husband, Joseph, of Lexington, Martha Jennings and her husband, David L., of Whitesville, Georgia Dell Miles of Owensboro, Suzanne Gomez and her husband, Richard, of Atlanta, Katie Royalty and her husband, Ronnie, of Stanley and Christie Bender and her husband, Jim, of Philpot; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at noon Saturday at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery with full military honors conducted by VFW Post No. 696. The Rev. Richard Meredith will officiate. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Alzheimer's Association.

Lucille Yates

Mrs. Lucille Yates, 75, of 1244 Yelvington-Knottsville Road, Maceo, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Jan. 1, 1929, to the late Reat and Martha Pryor Farmer in Daviess County. She retired after working several years at Hillcrest Nursing Home, attended Yelvington Baptist Church and was formerly a member of Peoples Baptist Church for more than 20 years. She was dedicated to her family, and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Yates, who died March 25, 1993; two brothers, Harry and Clifton Farmer; and a sister, Margaret Conkright.

Survivors include a son, Ray and his wife, Lyn Yates, of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Cindy Greenwell and her husband, Dale, of Maceo; two grandchildren, Bradley Crump and Brittanie Hite; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Ashley Hite; three brothers, Harland Farmer of Owensboro, Paul Farmer of Maceo and James Farmer of Evansville; a sister, Mary Young of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home, with burial in Elmwood cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mary Ardell Sims

OCALA, Fla. - Mary Ardell Sims, age 79, of Ocala, formerly of Todd County, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 21, 2004, at her home in Ocala. Ms. Sims is a retired registered nurse. Ms. Sims is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernice Wilhite; and one sister, Ms. Donna Jo Francis.

Ms. Sims is survived by three children, Cindy Davis of Pensacola, Fla., Roger Sims of Hartford and Gary Sims of Las Vegas; Ms. Sims is also survived by two brothers, Brother Tommy Wilhite and Nelvis Wilhite; as well as four sisters, Sally English, Maudine Jett, Bonnie Reid and Patty Hightower. Ms. Sims is also survived by six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The Sims family will be receiving friends at the Todd County Funeral Home (270-265-5616) on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and again on Friday from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Brother Tommy Wilhite officiating and interment to follow at the Gants cemetery.

Lawrence Porter Sheriff

Lawrence Porter Sheriff, 87, formerly of Utica died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Barren County Health Care Center in Glasgow. He was a member of Utica Baptist Church, where he served as a active member for many years. He was a farmer and took an active role in farm organizations throughout the state. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Porter Sheriff and Elsye Graddy Sheriff.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Dawson Sheriff of Glasgow; one sister, Mildred Sheriff Jenkins of Glasgow; one niece, Donna Jenkins Pace and husband Jim of Nashville; and one nephew Larry Jenkins and wife Vickie of Glasgow.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro with burial to follow in Utica cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at James H. Davis Funeral Home.

Jeanette Logsdon Schartung

Jeanette Logsdon Schartung, 54, of Owensboro died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born July 28, 1950, in Daviess County, she was actively involved with her church, Precious Blood Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharist minister and lector and member of Koinonia. She was the former owner of Jeanette's Tanning and Toning and was a surgical tech. She was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed bingo, church, helping others and most of all, caring for her grandchildren. She was an amazing woman who will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jackie Schartung, on June 21, 1996; and her mother, Betty Logsdon, on Dec. 21, 2003.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, John A. Schartung Jr.; two daughters, Jennifer Gibbs and Jessie Schartung of Owensboro; three sons, John Schartung III, Jason Schartung and Jeff Schartung, all of Owensboro; eight grandchildren, Morgan and Jared Gibbs, Caley, Jordon and Alyssa Schartung and Nickolas, Javonte and Paris Schartung, all of Owensboro; her father, Martin Logsdon of Owensboro; three sisters, Martha Wilson of Owensboro, Barbara Caton and Becky Puffenbarger, both of Virginia; six brothers, Norman Logsdon, Larry Logsdon, Tony Logsdon, Marty Logsdon and David Logsdon, all of Owensboro, and Darrell Logsdon of Bowling Green; and several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins and friends.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at St. Martin Catholic Church with burial in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Right to Life, 1115 Tamarack Road, Suite 200, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Walter Ray 'Rusty' Pointer

CENTRAL CITY - Walter Ray "Rusty" Pointer, 74, of Central City died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at his home. He was a retired coal miner.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Sallee Pointer; a son, Ray Pointer; four daughters, Rita Pointer, Ann Pointer, Tracy Fraze and Heather Roberts; a brother, Bobby Pointer; and two sisters, Patsy Groves and Sharon Williams.

Services: 11 a.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial: Fairmount cemetery in Central City.
