Marie Alvey Stone, 93, of 2857 Tanglewood Dr., Owensboro, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Leisure Years Nursing Home in Owensboro. She was born in Hancock County to the late Elmer and Golda (Harrison) Cook. She was a member of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church, and she enjoyed playing golf. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Stone, and her former husband, Jesse Lee Alvey.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Jim Pfister of Owensboro; two granddaughters, Deidre "Dee Dee" and Barry Martin of Gulf Shores, Ala., and Marsha Day of Owensboro; and three great-grandchildren, Zach Day of Owensboro, Lindsay Harris of Gulf Shores, Ala., and Erin Martin of Gulf Shores.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro with visitation from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Owensboro at a later date.

Kevin Shaun Statts

Kevin Shaun Statts, 26, of 2732 West 5th St., Owensboro, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004. He was born April 13, 1978, in Owensboro. He had worked at Whitehall Furniture and as a roofer. He enjoyed hunting and spending time with his children.

Survivors include his parents, Everett and Carolyn Miller Statts; a daughter, Masie Statts; a son, Hunter Statts; his fiancee, Denise Workman and daughter, Kayle Workman; a sister, Stacy Statts; a brother, Brian Statts and his wife, Charlotte; grandmothers, Eula McIntire and Eva Statts; and two nieces, Jessica and Hannah Statts.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mary Carr Smith

Mary Carr Smith, 87, of 6829 Leslie Lane, Owensboro, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at Hillcrest Healthcare. She was born June 1, 1917, to the late William Frederick and Flora Hallie May Carr Jr. She was a member of Yellow Creek Baptist Church and was retired from General Electric. Her hobbies were sewing and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Henderson Smith, on Jan. 29, 1988; a son, Charlie Ray Smith, in 1997; and a daughter, Brenda Lee Thorpe, on March 16, 1997.

Survivors include two sons, James H. Smith and William Terry Smith, both of Owensboro; two daughters, Mary Grant of Tell City, Ind., and Barbara Gabbert of Lewisport; 18 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be Yellow Creek cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

James Franklin Monarch

MOUNT CARMEL, Pa. - James Franklin Monarch, 76, of Apt. 111, Pleasant Valley Estates, Mount Carmel, died at 5:44 a.m., Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at Geisinger Medical Center after being stricken suddenly and taken to the hospital. He was born July 4, 1928, in Owensboro to James L. Monarch and Edwina Foster, lived in Elysburg, Pa., for 14 years and the last three years in Mount Carmel. He was a retired instrument assembler for Weston Corp. and was very active in the VFW. He served as post commander of Roselle Park Post No. 9191 and was also a member of the American Legion and several area social clubs. He attended Owensboro High School and served in the U.S. Navy for five years as a yeoman, 2nd class, petty officer aboard the USS Rochester.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Woodrow (Mary Louise) Breece of Kirkwood, Mo., and Mrs. Mary Florence Washington of Lexington; a brother, Michael Monarch and wife, Phyllis; and several nieces and nephews. Local nieces and nephews include R. Craig Rhoades and wife, Bobbi, Brent Rhoades and wife, Ann Marie, LaRae Kyttle and husband, Francis, and Marsha Vesnefski and husband, Sheldon. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William and James Monarch; and a dear friend, Bob Gusick.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. EST Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Farrow Funeral Home in Shamokin, Pa. Burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. EST Tuesday at the funeral home.

Joseph Paul Castlen II
12/27/2004

Joseph Paul Castlen II, 56, of Castlen's Mountain, Whitesville, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at his home after a brave fight with cancer. Born in Daviess County the oldest of 13 children of Joseph Paul and Gertrude Calhoun Castlen, he was a 1966 graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, served three tours of duty in Vietnam, and was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral. He retired from BellSouth in 2000 and was a member of Communication Workers of America. He was preceded in death by his father in 2000; his mother-in-law, Edwina Ward, in 1994; and his brother-in-law, Scott Ward, in 1991. Joe loved most being with his wife, Nancy, and spending Sundays with his children and grandchildren at Castlen's Mountain. The traits which made him uniquely him were his direct honesty, unspoken generosity, wit, humor and stubbornness.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Nancy Ward Castlen; a daughter, Candance Castlen Brake and her husband, Nick, of Owensboro; a son, Chris Castlen and his wife, Stacy, of Owensboro; four grandchildren, Anna Caroline Brake, Nicholas Brake, Emily Castlen and Paige Castlen, all of Owensboro; his mother, Gertrude Castlen of Stanley; seven sisters, Barbara Erpenbeck and her husband, Larry, of Union, Pat Wuerth and her husband, Joe, of Lanesville, Ind., Betty Whitehouse and her husband, Dean, of Owensboro, Helen Johnson and her husband, Walter, of Lexington, Marti Castlen of Owensboro, Connie Cowan and her husband, Randy, of Lexington and Jackie Castlen of Owensboro; five brothers, Jim Castlen of Owensboro, John Castlen of Lexington, Mark Castlen and his wife, Christine, of Owensboro, Charlie Castlen and his wife, Lisa, of Owensboro and George Castlen and his wife, Maggie, of Lexington; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Terri Ward of Owensboro, Jill Ward of Whitesville, Denny and Patty Ward of Richmond, Va., and Sue and Tim Theissen of Edgewood; 41 nieces and nephews; and seven great-nieces and nephews.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen Cathedral. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home, where prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A private burial will be in Ellis Family cemetery in Whitesville. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of quietly helping someone in need.

Thelma Belcher Carter Murphy

REED - Thelma Belcher Carter Murphy of Reed died on her 80th birthday, Dec. 24, 2004, at Wellington Parc of Owensboro. She was born in 1924 to the late Clifford A. and Lillie Belcher and was the owner-operator of Thelma's Beauty Shop for 30 years. She was lovingly known as "Tom Cat" by her many longtime friends, with whom she enjoyed socializing, as well as for her love for gardening and traveling with her husband. She was preceded in death by her husband of 13 years, James Louis Carter, in 1958; a brother, James C. Belcher, in 1963; and a grandson, Michael C. McGovern, in 1994.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Leo D. Murphy; a daughter, Carolyn Carter McGovern and her husband, William Philip; grandsons, Philip Louis McGovern and his wife, Cheryl, of Henderson, William Patrick McGovern, Joey McGovern and his wife, Tabitha, and David McGovern and his wife, Kim, all of Owensboro; five great-grandchildren, Matthew, Justin, Brittany, Noah and Whitley; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Chelsea and Dylan; three sisters, Lorrene Burden Hardy, Opal and her husband, William P. Brown, and Phyllis and her husband, Joseph Marion Howard; two brothers and their wives, Gerald "Jerry" and Ruth Ann Belcher and Randall "Randy" and Elizabeth Belcher, all of Owensboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, of which she was past president. She had also served as president of the Mary Lee Cravens School PTA in 1956 and was a member of the Monday Sister's Day Out Club.

Friends may call at Glenn Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with prayers said at 7 p.m. today. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Reed. Burial will be at a later date in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Augustine Building Fund.

Freeman Webster Towers

SANTE FE, N.M. - Freeman Webster Towers, 96, died on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at his daughter's home in Sante Fe. Mr. Towers was born in Lynn, Mass., on June 12, 1908. The family moved to New Hampshire where he attended a one-room school. He earned his bachelor of science in engineering degree at Northeastern University in Boston and graduated as a civil engineer in 1931. He married Mildred Niles on June 27, 1941, in Lynn, and until retirement from a civil engineering career they lived in Massachusetts. Then Freeman and Mildred lived in Denver, Owensboro and Swampscott, Mass., before they moved to Sante Fe in 1999.

Mr. Towers will be especially missed by his wife Mildred with whom he shared a long and devoted marriage; a son, Samuel of Madisonville; a daughter, Polly Rose of Sante Fe; grandson, Jesse Rose; granddaughters, Heather and Holly Towers and Molly Rose; and his friends at the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation and the Kingston residence. The family is grateful to Dr. Frances Chavez and Ms. Consuelo Romero for their loving care.

A memorial service has taken place at the Unitarian-Universalist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, 1399 Luisa St., Santa Fe, NM 87505.

Shirley Gibson

GREENVILLE - Shirley Gibson, 64, of 100 Pritchett Drive, Greenville, died at 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Fla. She was born Nov. 26, 1940, in Muhlenberg County. She was a retired nurse from Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville and a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Bremen.

Survivors include a daughter, Candace Roos of Port Orange, Fla.; a granddaughter, Jordan Sheets of Port Orange; a sister and brother-in-law, Jo Ann and Wesley Nelson of Central City; a niece, Kim Krill of Hobart, Ind.; and a nephew, Michael Nelson of Hobart.

Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, with the Rev. Leroy Rearden officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah cemetery in Bremen. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dora Mae Ridenour

FORT MEADE, Fla. - Dora Mae Ridenour, 65, of Fort Meade died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at her home. Dora Mae Messenger was born Sept. 5, 1939, in Livermore to Floyd L. and Thelma Mae Fielden Messenger and was later married to Vaden L. Ridenour. Dora Mae was a teacher's aide and assistant for the Polk County School Board in Florida and a member of the First Church of God in Fort Meade.

Survivors include her husband, Vaden L. Ridenour; three daughters, Leslie Jayne Douglass of Carriere, Miss., and Linda Mae Knight and Carolyn Sue Forbes, both of Fort Meade; a grandson, James R. "Jamie" Knight III of Fort Meade; a granddaughter, Megan N. Douglass of Carriere; a sister, Joyce Riley of Livermore; and an uncle, R.M. "Tarzan" Fielden of Livermore.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Richland Baptist cemetery in McLean County. Friends may visit with the Ridenour family from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel.

The Ridenour family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Good Shepherd Hospice, P.O. Box 7129, Winter Haven, FL 33880. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at Musters in Livermore.

Mary Elaine Payne Fulkerson

Mary Elaine Payne Fulkerson, 52, of The Oaks at Lewisport died there at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004. She was born March 22, 1952, in Ohio County and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral and enjoyed being with friends and family and shopping and helping other people. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin Earl Payne and Virginia Simon Payne.

Survivors include three daughters, Tracy Fulkerson of Good Springs, Texas, and Carrie Fulkerson and Tina Fulkerson, both of Owensboro; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Earl Payne and his wife Della Payne of Philpot, John Dale Payne and his wife Annette of Knottsville, David Ricky Payne and his wife Sharon of Masonville; and a sister, Linda Jean Payne and her husband Carl of Reynolds Station.

Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Cathedral. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 6:30 p.m. today at Haley-McGinnis.
