Community will miss the gentle voice of leader Alyce Knox

Alyce Knox was a soft-spoken, elegant woman whose strength of character and spirit contrasted with her gentle nature.

As a former president of William Martin Northern Kentucky Community Center in Covington in the early 1990s, Mrs. Knox promoted programs ranging from day care to senior services to emergency housing and food.

She even championed the causes of inmates who returned to the community, because she believed everyone deserved a second chance. She asked the board to develop a program to help felons seeking work.

"Mom was very active, even with her illness," said a daughter, Clarice Taylor of Louisville.

"She's more than just our family's loss, she's a loss to our community. She'll be sorely missed."

Mrs. Knox, 73, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at her home. She was a retired executive director of the Wesley Child Care Center in Cincinnati, where she helped lead a fund-raising campaign for expansion.

Mrs. Knox's husband of 50 years, Fermon Knox, was the former head of the Northern Kentucky Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Their children also enjoyed success by becoming teachers, lawyers, social workers and court officers.

Whether it was behind the scenes promoting social programs or being out front as a political candidate, Mrs. Knox made her voice heard.

Years ago, she was the first black woman to run for the Covington Board of Education and was the first black female social worker with the Northern Kentucky Department of Human Resources.

She also owned the first minority-based day care center in Northern Kentucky.

Mrs. Knox could prod adults to help in her causes for civil rights and was equally adept at entertaining and encouraging children to do their best.

Rollins Davis, the executive director of the Northern Kentucky Community Center, worked for many years under Mrs. Knox and Martin, who co-founded the center more than 25 years ago.

"I remember one of the first times I saw her, she was reading poetry during a Martin Luther King celebration," Mr. Davis said.

"I was so impressed by her energy and enthusiasm. She was such a strong leader and a good community person. You just don't replace someone like that."

Mrs. Knox was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church in Covington. A son, Millard Knox, died in 1988.

Other survivors include her husband, Fermon Knox; daughters, Jessica Perkins of Elsmere, Wendellyn Rush of Texas and Victoria Storey of Elsmere; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. James A.M.E. Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes. Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45103. Joseph R. Garr Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.
