Harold N. Taylor
05/02/2005

Harold N. Taylor, 61, of 9325 Highway 231, Masonville, succumbed to injuries suffered in a March 4, 2003, motorcycle accident in Daytona Beach, Fla., Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Wellington Parc of Owensboro. He was born in Jefferson County to the late Harold E. and Margaret Dulin Taylor. He attended Masonville United Methodist Church.

Harold had served for 42 years as a member of the Masonville Fire Department, where he reached the rank of assistant fire chief. He began his law enforcement career in 1969, eventually serving a term as Daviess County sheriff and five terms as jailer. Throughout his law enforcement career he had many accomplishments. He served as the president of both the Kentucky Sheriff's Association and the Kentucky Jailer's Association. He was the only jailer in the United States to consistently operate a detention center without local tax dollars. Jail surplus funds accumulated throughout his terms were used to construct and pay for the majority of the new detention center facilities. One of his proudest moments as jailer was the fiscal court dedication of the first building on the complex as the Harold N. Taylor Restricted Custody Facility. He was instrumental in drafting many pieces of legislation that were subsequently passed into law. He was a very active participant with the Kentucky Sheriff's Boys and Girls Ranch in Gilbertsville.

Surviving is his wife of three years, Kathy Freels Taylor; a daughter, Deborah Taylor Duncan (Barry) of Masonville; a son, Duane Taylor of Masonville; two sisters, Jean Owen (Randy) and Bettye Aull, all of Owensboro; and seven grandchildren, Blake, Jordyn, Madison, Gage, Hannah, Cameron and Ashley.

Frances McCandless Taylor
05/01/2005

Frances McCandless Taylor, died Friday, April 29, 2005, after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Rowan and Rubye Casebier McCandless. Frances had two brothers who preceded her in death, Carlysle McCandless of Lexington and Paul McCandless of Louisville. Her entire family were members of First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, James Boyd Taylor of Owensboro; a sister, Carolyn VonLehman; a niece, Lynn VonLehman Hudgins of Lexington; a nephew, William Stephen VonLehman of Russellville; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Carlysle McCandless of Lexington; a nephew, Russell McCandless of Maple Plain, Minn.; a niece, Camilla and her husband, the Rev. Gregory Knox Jones of Wilmington, Del., and their children, Alex Jones of Boston, Leslie Russell and his wife Kristin of Pittsburgh, Grandison and her husband Mark Burnside of Richmond, Va., and Chris Stewart of Chicago.

Frances Taylor possessed wonderful talents, including gardening with wildflowers, roses, rare plants and training them. She introduced pachysandra to the city and enjoyed discussing them with her close friend Antoinette (Nettie) Goetz Watkins. Good taste prevailed. Frances was an avid reader and the classics were her favorite. She also enjoyed solving puzzles, especially the tough ones. Her gifts of writings were treasures that revealed the great story and mastery of expressing her thoughts and delightfully revealed her true talent with the language. Her great intellect was exhibited by her writings. She had a love and interest of music. She was a supporter of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra. When the orchestra was "on the ropes" financially, she organized entertainment that demanded interest and support. These events soon put the orchestra back on its feet. This also revealed business talents that were evident by the positions she had at a department store named McAtee, Lyddane and Ray. Then she was assistant to the sales manager at Murphy Chair Co., later at American Suppliers in Owensboro and finally with an insurance firm. She possessed outstanding skills for accuracy in her duties and the amazing part of that career was that she never sought a position as firms always asked her to join them. Still flowers and literature were her favorites.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel, 3009 Frederica St. in Owensboro. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday at James H. Davis Funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the donor's favorite charity or church.
