CLOVERPORT - Mary Lillian Roberts, 74, of 502 Murray St., Cloverport, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born on Oct. 10, 1930, in Breckinridge County. She was a domestic homemaker in her own home.

Survivors include a son, Josh F. Roberts of Lewisport; two daughters, Lisa Newby of Hawesville and Cindy Thurman of Owensboro; a brother, Chester DeWitt of Owensboro; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at Cloverport Baptist Church, with Brother Darrell Crenshaw officiating. Burial will be in Cloverport cemetery at 208 E. Main St. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Barry O. Swift

Barry O. Swift, 43, of 2900 East Yellowstone Drive, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at his home. He was born Feb. 17, 1962, in Daviess County and was a professional barbecue cook. He was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, a friend and faithful volunteer of VFW Post No. 696 and a past member of Eagles and AMVETS. He enjoyed football, watching the Rams and Catholic High School football, music and entertaining. He graduated from Catholic High School and ITT Technical Institute. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Cromwell "TC" Swift, in 1976, and Betty Jane Wells Swift, in 1969; and a brother, Steve Swift, in 1989.

Survivors include his wife of two years, Lee Ann "Ware" Swift; a son, Josh Mayes of Paducah; four brothers, Mike Swift and his wife, Brenda and Mark Swift and his wife, Robin, all of Owensboro, Scott Swift of Orlando, Fla., and Max Swift and his wife, Dawn, of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Precious Blood Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ed Bradley officiating. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home in Owensboro. Prayers will be said at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Barry Swift Fund.

Elvis D. Rice

Elvis D. Rice, 79, of Maceo was called home to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on July 26, 1925, in Hancock County to the late Dewey and Willia (Masterson) Rice. Elvis retired from Whirlpool Corp. in Evansville after 37 years of service. He was an active member and deacon of Maceo Baptist Church, where he had been a member for more than 40 years. He recently received his 28-years pin for attending Sunday school. He was a member of Hancock County Masonic Lodge No. 115. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the 101st Airborne Division, where he received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and numerous campaign ribbons. He loved to hunt rabbits and raised registered beagles. He was also an avid gardener. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Bradshaw.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Esther (Newton) Rice; a daughter and son-in-law, Laretta and Larry Bullock of Owensboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and JoAnn Rice of Maceo and Byron and Leslie Rice of Owensboro; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a niece; a nephew; and several cousins.

Services are at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Mount Eden Baptist Church cemetery in Hancock County. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Maceo Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 57, Maceo, KY 42355.

Jesse Leake Hale

Jesse Leake Hale, 92, died at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, in Muhlenberg Community Hospital, following a lengthy illness. She was born on May 11, 1913, the daughter of John Wesley Hill and Grace Caskey Hill. She was a member of Roland Memorial Baptist Church in Greenville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Winbern "Buck" Hale; brothers John Hill, Perry Hill, Norman Hill and Eldoras "Dodie" Hill; and sisters Ettie Drake, Christine Cary, Essie Hardison, Etha Wells and Elizabeth Sherrod.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Gary's Funeral Home, by the Rev. Danny Mooneyhan. Burial will be held in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Friends may call after 8 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Ruby Sipes

BEAVER DAM - Ruby Sipes, 88, of Owensboro, formerly of Beaver Dam, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at Harbourside Healthcare in Owensboro. She was a homemaker and member of Horse Branch Church of God.

Survivors include a daughter, Hilda Chumley.

Services: 2 p.m. today at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial: Sunnyside cemetery in Beaver Dam. Visitation: After noon today at the funeral home.

Truman Edward Kennedy

Truman Edward Kennedy, 79, of 6655 Thoreau Village, Utica, died at 2:10 a.m. Sept. 20, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Daviess County on May 1, 1926, to the late Abe Henry Kennedy and Ella Ray Edmonson Kennedy. He was retired from Lanham Brothers Contractors after 36 years as a superintendent. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church for 67 years and served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, training union director and on several committees. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing, hunting, being with family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gardening and flowers. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, A.H. Kennedy Jr., in 1944, and Ray L. Kennedy in 2004.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Jackson Kennedy; two daughters, Linda Kennedy Sholar and her husband, Michael, of Owensboro and Renne Kennedy Nolan and her husband, Ed, of Clearwater, Fla.; grandchildren, Michelle Sholar McManus and her husband, Brian, of Owensboro, Andrea Sholar, Michael Nolan, Amanda Nolan and Kathleen Nolan, all of Clearwater, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Brianna and Colleen McManus of Owensboro.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Haley-McGinnis Chapel. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery. The Rev. Steve James will be officiating. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Ohio Valley, Inc. 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301-9979 or Macedonia Baptist Church, 4839 Millers Mill Road, Owensboro, KY 42303.

Allen Wayne Vowels

Allen Wayne Vowels, 52, of 2330 Hayden Bridge Road, died at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept.19, 2005, at his home. He was born in Daviess County on Dec. 26, 1952, to Pat Vowels and the late Jaunita Beyke Vowels. He was employed with Alcan Aluminum in Sebree for 32 years. He was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. His biggest joy was being with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed cooking, boating, horseshoes, four-wheeling, camping, gardening, hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Debbie "Birdie" Vowels; a son, Chad Vowels and Amy Bartlett of Owensboro; a daughter, Stephanie Terry and her husband, Joe, of Owensboro; two grandchildren, Austin and Rachel Terry; his father, Pat Vowels of Sorgho; a brother, Phillip Vowels and his wife, Pam, of Nashville; a sister, Sandra Kelley and her husband, Don, of Owensboro; several nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services are at noon Thursday at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. The Rev. Richard Powers will officiate.

Charles C. Powers
09/20/2005

Mr. Charles C. Powers, 82, of Owensboro, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, at Harborside Health Care Center. He was born April 27, 1923, to the late Ambrose H. "Sixty" and Florence Helen Mattingly Powers in Daviess County. He retired from General Electric after 30 years of service and was a Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank "Sixty" Powers; and an infant sister, Doris Rebecca Powers.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Jeannetta Pagan Powers; two sisters, Barbara Fowler of Owensboro and Rachael Hatfield of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church with entombment in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home, with prayers at 7 p.m. today. Military honors will be given by VFW Post No. 696. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church Building Fund, 3152 East 6th St., Owensboro, KY 42303.

Anna Geraldine Staples

Anna Geraldine Staples, 92, formerly of 910 Cedar St., Owensboro, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at Harborside Health Care of Owensboro. She was born on Feb. 21, 1913, in Daviess County to the late Martin and Gertrude Mattingly. She was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Albert Staples, on March 21, 1986.

She is survived by five sons, William A. (Marilee) Staples Jr., Paul E. (Betty) Staples, Joseph "Joe" (Ann) Staples, Robert E. (Rosina) Staples and Kenneth R. Staples, all of Owensboro; 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many stepgrandchildren; many stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Vincent Mattingly of Owensboro; and two sisters, Merici Millay and Margaret Payne, both of Owensboro.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at St. Stephen Cathedral. Burial is in Resurrection cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today at James H. Davis Funeral Home, where prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m.

Marvin Walls

CENTRAL CITY - Marvin Walls, 68, of Central City died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at Maple Manor Health Care in Greenville. He was a farmer and member of Apostolic Church in Central City.

Survivors include a sister, Patricia Hunker.

Graveside services: 11 a.m. today at Rose Hill cemetery in Central City. Visitation: After 9:30 a.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City.

William B. 'Billy' Clark Jr.

William B. "Billy" Clark Jr., 66, of 3018 Pleasant Valley Road, Owensboro, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at Norton Hospital in Louisville. He was born in Daviess County to the late William Bernard and Corine Kost Clark. He had been a commercial driver for Admiral Merchants Inc. He loved very much spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Estes.

He is survived by his wife, Cookie Clark; a son and his wife, Colburn and Jane Clark of Owensboro; two daughters, Cindy Clark Midkiff of Owensboro and Kelly Fischer and her husband, Jimmy, of Maceo, three grandchildren, Campbell Clark, Michael Thomas Midkiff and Jimmy Fischer; two sisters, Mary Catherine Reed of Henderson and Clarice Hunt of Owensboro; four brothers, Bobby Clark of Owensboro, Phillip Clark of Virginia Beach, Va., Terry Clark of Lexington and Eugene Clark of Idaho.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at the Glenn Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today and after noon Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the William B. Clark Memorial Fund, c/o Cookie Clark, 3018 Pleasant Valley Road, Owensboro, KY 42303.
