Willie Owen Ford

Willie Owen Ford, 73, of Philpot died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, in Utica at his daughter's home. He was a farmer and a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Philpot.

Survivors include three sons, David Ford, Billy Ray Ford and Thomas Ford; four daughters, Margaret Wethington, Katherine Tindle, Wilma Jean Cravens and Kathleen Dawson; two brothers, Sidney Ford and Hobart Ford; and three sisters, Ida Pendleton, Pearl Lucas and Viola Dodson.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Custer cemetery. Visitation: From 3:30 to 8 p.m. Monday and after 8 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: American Cancer Society.

Mary Della Beck

HAWESVILLE - Mary Della Beck, 79, of Owensboro, formerly of Hawesville, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born in Hawesville on March 19, 1926, to the late Robert Rice and Elizabeth Madden Cook. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and was retired from Clarion Publishing Co. after working there 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Norman E. Beck, on Feb. 10, 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Norma Beck of Owensboro; a grandson, Nicholas Whitesell and his wife, Avery, of Owensboro; and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Jackson.

Services are at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Owensboro. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial cemetery in Henderson. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today and from 7 a.m. until noon Monday at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville.

Carlos Conard Smith

BREMEN - Carlos Conard Smith, 70, of Bremen died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. He was a farmer and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Davis Smith; a son, Kenny Smith; four daughters, Debra Zackery, Lanie Tooley, Kathy Smith and Tracy Kirkwood; three brothers, Glenn Smith, Leonard Smith and Doug Smith; and a sister, Orina Mahlosky.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial: Bethlehem cemetery in Bremen. Visitation: After 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Virginia Wade Poulter

Mary Virginia Wade Poulter, 79, of Owensboro died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at her home. She was born on Oct. 11, 1925, in Daviess County to the late William E. and Mary Evelyn (Tipmore) Greenwell. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dean Wade; her second husband, Robert W. Poulter Jr.; a sister, Betty Ambs; and three brothers, Donald, William and Ronnie Greenwell.

She was retired from the office of Drs. Stiles, McKay and Fuqua. For a short time, she was in the antique and collectible business. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, for several years was a volunteer at Owensboro Medical Health System and was a Kentucky Colonel.

She is survived by two sons, Lowell and his wife, Karen, Wade of Michigan and Michael and his wife, Mary, Wade of Owensboro; two grandchildren, Julie Pate and M. Andrew Wade; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Greenwell of Oak Hill, Va., and Wayne Greenwell of Owensboro; seven sisters, Dorothy Louise Embry, Anna Curtis, Myrl Blomquist, Catherine Wigginton and Phyllis Newton, all of Owensboro, Katie McCollom of Hopkinsville and Jane Ransom of Coxs Creek.

Services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sorgho. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Trinity United Methodist Church, 2815 Old Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303, or Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Mary Pauline (Marylene) Wiles

Mary Pauline (Marylene) Wiles, 85, of Maceo died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born May 9, 1920, in Stanley to the late Frank "Sug" and Frances Sauer. She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Wiles Sr.; and her brothers, Albert and John Sauer.

She was a loving wife and mother, deeply devoted to God and to her family, thoughtful of and generous to others. She found joy in flowers, animals and card playing, but above all, she enjoyed people. A niece expressed it well when she wrote: "Aunt Marylene could light up a room with her wit and smile; and I always loved being around her. She was a beautiful person." A woman of prayer who drew strength from the Word of God and faith community, she found this divine and human assistance in helping her to undergo the necessary dialysis treatments. She was grateful to the doctors and nurses who helped to maintain her health and give her quality of life.

Surviving are two sons, George Lewis Wiles Jr. and wife, Joan and Eddie Wiles and wife, Marina; a grandson, Brant Keyes Wiles; three sisters, Marguerite Sauer, Katherine and husband Thomas "Red" Saltsman and Sister Mary Elizabeth Sauer, C.P.; two sisters-in-law, Christine Sauer and Ethel Sauer; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sorgho. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from noon until 2 p.m. Sunday at James H. Davis Funeral Home where prayers will be said at 6 p.m. today. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Passionist Nuns Monastery, 8564 Crisp Road, Whitesville, KY 42378.

Freddie Welborn

CENTRAL CITY - Freddie Welborn, 56, of Central City died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Muhlenberg County.

He is the son of Minnie Welborn and the late Brownie Welborn. He is survived by three brothers, Jackie and wife Paula of Louisville, Tommy and wife Pam and Ricky and wife Teresa, all of Central City; and one sister, Shirley and husband Mike Withrow of Edgewood. He is also survived by nine nieces; four nephews; three great-nieces; and eight great-nephews.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Central City where he served as usher, a member of the board of trustees and was Sunday school class treasurer.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Roger Skipworth officiating and assisted by the Rev. Ernest Bean. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Central City. Visitation will be today from 5 to 9 p.m. and Sunday after 8 a.m. at the funeral home.

Derek Lyn Meredith

HARDINSBURG - Derek Lyn Meredith, 32, of Hardinsburg died there Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Meredith; a son, Elisha Meredith; his grandfather, Lloyd Russell; a brother, Greg Meredith; and a sister, Rhonda Meredith.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Kingswood. Burial: Bethel cemetery. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Auburn 'Casey' Case

CENTRAL CITY - Auburn "Casey" Case, 66, of 104 Golden Tide Ave., Central City, died at 8:35 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. He was born in Muhlenberg County on Feb. 14, 1939, and was a saw mill and security worker. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dan William Jewell; and two sisters, Delphia Blick and Jonell House.

Survivors include a brother, Isaac Tilmon Jewell of Central City; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 1 p.m. Monday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Joe Pharris officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Central City. Visitation is after 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Eugene Payne

Eugene Payne, 66, formerly of Owensboro, died from complications associated with cancer on April 21, 2005, in Louisville. He was born on Jan. 21, 1939. One of his fondest memories was learning the game of golf and caddying at the Owensboro Country Club as a young boy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Severius and Nellie Payne; three brothers, Raymond Payne, Tom Payne and Charles Payne; and a sister, Marie Jones.

He is survived by a brother, Arthur Payne of Topeka, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, in the St. Anne Chapel at Resurrection cemetery.

Clayton J. Rice Jr.

GREENVILLE - Clayton J. Rice Jr., 86, of 214 Hopkinsville St., Greenville, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at 6:15 p.m. in Muhlenberg Community Hospital, following several months' illness. He was born in Greenville on May 9, 1919, the son of Clayton Jefferson Rice Sr. and Helen Puryear Rice. He owned and managed the S.E. Rice Tobacco Co. in Greenville for many years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in Panama for three years as a staff sergeant. He was an elder of Greenville Cumberland Presbyterian Church and former mayor of Greenville. He was a member of the planning and zoning board, a Kentucky Colonel and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid golfer and a graduate of University of Kentucky. He attended Harvard Business School and was an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty Rice of Greenville; a daughter, Jennie Rice (Von) Harshman of Franklin, Tenn.; a son, Jeff (Carolyn) Rice of Chattanooga, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Meredith Rice Harshman and Robert Allen Harshman, both of Franklin, Thomas C. (Lesley) Rice of Mount Juliet, Tenn., and David Clayton Rice and James William Rice, both of Chattanooga; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Rice Harvey of Central City; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Gary's Funeral Home, by Dr. Arthur Burrows. Burial will be held in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 23, and after 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The Rev. Ted Lewis Shipp
09/23/2005

FORT WRIGHT - The Rev. Ted Lewis Shipp, 54, of Fort Wright died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at his home. He was the pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church in Latonia. His church membership lies within the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church in Louisville. He had served on the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church for 25 years, since 1980. The church was his whole life. His mother, Martha Shultz Shipp, died in December 2002.

Survivors include a daughter, Ella Grace Shipp of Owensboro; a son, Sam Shipp of Owensboro; his father, Dr. Charles J. Shipp of Greenville; and a sister, Barbara Ruffalo of Sarasota, Fla.

A celebration of his life will take place at 10:30 a.m. EST Sunday, Sept. 25, at Trinity United Methodist Church. There will be no visitation. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Connley Brothers Funeral Home in Latonia is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund or Shipp Children Education Fund, 101 E. Southern Ave., Latonia, KY 41015.
