Wayne Whitsett

Wayne Whitsett, 49, of 1931 Cherokee Drive, Owensboro, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at his home. He was born in Jefferson County and was a retired sheetmetal worker. He attended Owensboro Church of Christ, loved working on cars and watching NASCAR, and also loved his dog, Brolly, very much and enjoyed taking walks with him.

Surviving are his wife of 26 years, Beth Rose Whitsett; a daughter, Sarah Beth Whitsett of Owensboro; a son, Jeremy Wayne Whitsett of Owensboro; his mother, Catherine Whitsett of Owensboro; his father, Perry Whitsett Sr. of Russellville; three brothers, Perry Whitsett Jr. of Louisville, James Whitsett of Owensboro and Alfred Whitsett of Maceo; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at Glenn Funeral Home chapel with burial following in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Ohio Valley Affiliate, 333 Guthrie St., Suite 207, Louisville, KY 40202.

Alsie Grimes Wells

BELTON - Alsie Grimes Wells, 94, of Belton died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville following a lengthy illness.

Born in Warren County on June 20, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Emmanuel Grimes and Mary Francis Garrett Grimes. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Central City Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by a great-grandson in 1978.

Survivors include her husband of 76 years, T.R. Wells Sr.; two sons, T.R. (Linda) Wells Jr. and Dalton L. (June) Wells, both of Belton; she is also survived by four grandchildren, Lynette (Don) Cobb of Athens, Ala., Darlene (B.J.) Westfall of Belton, Dwight Wells of Newaygo, Mich., and Kevin (LeAnn) Wells of Belton; 11 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; and other survivors include four sisters and a brother.

The visitation will be held at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home on Sunday, Aug. 7 from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home on Monday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. with Mr. Frank Dockins officiating and assisted by Mr. Gage Cobb. Burial will be in Horton's Chapel cemetery.

Michael Joseph Vessels

Michael Joseph Vessels, 44, of 1741 Parrish Plaza Drive, Owensboro, died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at 2414 Kentucky 81. He was born July 10, 1961, in St. Albans, W.Va., and had been employed at Vessels Alignment as a service manager for 20 years. He was of the Catholic faith and enjoyed NASCAR and golf.

Survivors include his parents, Robert E. and Jo Ann Richards Vessels; three brothers, Tim Vessels, Steve Vessels and his wife, Tracy, and Tom Vessels and his wife, Cathy, all of Owensboro; three sisters, Sylvia Luttrell and her husband, Scott, of Pekin, Ind., Debbie Zuerner and her husband, Bob, of Davenport, Iowa, and Tricia West and her husband, Mike, of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Stephen Cathedral with the Rev. J. Edward Bradley officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family wishes that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to St. Joseph Peace Mission for Children, 1328 W. Third St., Owensboro, KY 42301.

Debbie Egbert Taul

HARDINSBURG - Debbie Egbert Taul, 46, of Falls of Rough died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System.

Survivors include her husband, Phillip Taul; two daughters, Lori Blair and Michelle Fears; a brother, Rich Egbert; and two sisters, Donna Egbert and Brenda Moore.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday at New Clover Creek Baptist Church. Burial: Church cemetery. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 8:30 a.m. Monday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg.

Bobby Simon

GLENVILLE - Bobby Simon, 70, of 10925 Kentucky 81, Utica, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. Thomas Robert Simon was born March 27, 1935, in Daviess County to the late Tom and Gertrude Coomes Simon, was later married to the former Donna Gail Dant on Jan. 2, 1965, and was better know as "Bobby" by his family and friends. Bobby was employed as a carpenter with Hartz Construction of Owensboro and was also a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Calhoun. He also enjoyed Atlanta Braves baseball and producing his own custom-made barbecue grills. Bobby was preceded in death by two brothers, Buddy and Jimmy; and also by a sister, Sue.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Donna; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Eddie and Dani Simon of Newman and Rodney Simon of Reed; three daughters and their husbands, Lisa and John Wathen of Sorgho, Teresa and Greg Scott of Sorgho and Dolores Simon of Utica; six grandchildren, Tabitha, John Thomas, Ashley Brandon, Logan and Dylan; a brother, Billy Simon of West Louisville; and six sisters, Helen Boarman, Connie Hood, Sister Mary Thomas Simon and Kathy Simon, all of Owensboro, Mary Howard of Whitesville and Peggy Cannon of Curdsville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Calhoun with Father Pete Hughes officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus cemetery in St. Joseph. Friends may visit with the Simon family from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 until 10:30 a.m. Monday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. Prayer services for Bobby Simon along with a video tribute of his life will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Muster's in Calhoun.

The Simon family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the St. Sebastian Catholic Church Building Fund, 180 Kentucky 136 West, Calhoun, KY 42327. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at Muster's in Calhoun.

Allene Matthews Pulliam

FORDSVILLE - Allene Matthews Pulliam, 99, of Fordsville died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at Fordsville Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born in Ohio County and was a homemaker and retired telephone operator. She was a member of Wesley Chapel Church. Mrs. Pulliam was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Pulliam, in 1982.

She is survived by three daughters, Dortha Boling and husband Maxie, Jackie Hobbs and husband Dewey, and Lovee Gunter, all of Fordsville; a son, Maxie Pulliam of Fordsville; two sisters, Elizabeth Cole of Hartford and Jessie Mae Melojevic of Chicago; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove Baptist in Pattiville with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville.

Olton Lee

GREENVILLE - Olton Lee, 81, of Greenville, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005 at his home. He was a member of the Greenville Church of Christ and an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired in 1982 after 12 years as a UMWA coal miner from Ayr Gem Mines.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Louise Allen Lee; a daughter, Linda Lee Wease; and three brothers, Guy Lee, J.E. Lee and Kenneth Lee.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial: Friendship cemetery in Greenville. Visitation: From 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home today and after 9 a.m. Sunday.

Raymond 'Ray' James Haragan Jr.

Raymond "Ray" James Haragan Jr., 83, of Owensboro died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at home. He was born Jan. 8, 1922, in Louisville and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where he served in several ministries, finance committee, lector and Eucharist minister. He was Eucharist minister for the hospital for 14 years, lay director of the Cursillo and president of the board of directors of the Help Office in the 1970s. He retired from the American Tobacco Co. after 37 years as an accounting supervisor working in Owensboro and Mountain Top, Pa. He graduated from St. Xavier High School in Louisville. He received his degree from the University of Louisville and attended Northwestern University. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Europe, England, France and Luxembourg. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, bird watching and was an avid reader. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him much happiness. He enjoyed the company of his many friends. His annual retreats to Gethsemani were very important in his later life.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Louise Gregory Haragan, in 1988; and his parents, Raymond J. Haragan Sr. and Margaret Green Haragan.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 14 years, Doris Clark Haragan; his son, John P. Haragan of Owensboro; his daughter, Brigid Haragan of Bethesda, Md.; two stepsons and wife, Mark (Ettagene) Hayden of Hartford and John Hayden of Owensboro; seven stepdaughters and spouses, Virginia (Eddie) Cook of Nashville, Lisa Guinn of Henderson, Stephanie (Mike) Houtchen, Rose (Mark) Reisz of Owensboro, Blaise Poth and Anne (Tom) Kandul of Louisville and Jeanne Hayden (Bobby Headrick) of Hartford; 25 stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Bob (Mary Ann) Haragan of Fort Myers, Fla.; one sister, Barbara Ann (Leo) Brown of Louisville; a brother-in-law, Bob (Marie) Clark of Fort Myers; and a sister-in-law, Sister Mary Brigid Gregory of St. Catherine.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with entombment in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home with prayers at 6 p.m. Visitation will also be after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mabel Ruth Brocksmith

Mabel Ruth Brocksmith, 89, of Owensboro, formerly of Freelandville, Ind., passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005, at Bon Harbor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on March 28, 1916, and was preceded in death by her husbands, Harold Schaefer, in 1943, and Edgar Brocksmith, in 1967. Ruth was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Russell Singleton; a sister, Edna Booth; and a grandson, Mark Snider.

A member of Bethel United Church of Christ in Freelandville, Ruth moved from Freelandville to Owensboro in the early 1980s, but always considered herself a Hoosier. Her love of basketball and baseball traveled with her, and she became an avid fan of the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers, a member of the "Panther Express" fan bus and traveled to countless Division II championship playoff games across the country. Ruth loved to crochet while watching the Atlanta Braves games, NASCAR races and other sports. Family, friends and countless others are enjoying the more than 200 afghans she made.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Beverly Snider and husband, Dallas, of Owensboro; a son, Gary Brocksmith and wife, Kathy, of Surprise, Ariz.; and a daughter, Gale Brocksmith of Evansville. Also surviving are a stepdaughter, Marilyn "Dodie" Coulter and husband, Dick, of Robinson, Ill.; and a stepson, Herb Brocksmith and wife, Sandy, of Vincennes, Ind. Grandchildren include Beth Snider and Karen Rowan of Owensboro, Ross Snider of Tulsa, Okla., Richard Brocksmith of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, Hae Hun Matos of Houston, Hae Yong Min and Chong Hee Min of Hayward, Calif. Also surviving are Debbie Gibson of Olney, Ill., Alan Coulter of North Toledo, Ill., Brian Brocksmith of Phoenix and Cathy Ellingwood of Waynetown, Ind. Ruth is also survived by three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at Bethel United Church of Christ cemetery in Freelandville, with the Rev. George Varns officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, and after 9 a.m. Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to a favorite charity. McClure Utt Funeral Home, 109 E. Sixth St., Bicknell IN, (812) 735-3646, is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Patrick Chambers

CALHOUN - Thomas Patrick Chambers, 37, of 420 W. Fourth St., Calhoun, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born Nov. 27, 1967, in Chicago. Mr. Chambers was a self-employed computer technician and the former owner of Digital Concepts in Owensboro. Mr. Chambers obtained a degree in technical science. He was of the Catholic faith most of his formative life at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Calhoun. He was preceded in death by his father, Billy G. Chambers.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Francine and Randall Burden of Madisonville; a son, Ryan Thomas Chambers; two brothers, Bill G. Chambers Jr. and Shawn M. Chambers, both of Lexington; two sisters, Michele Ashton of Calhoun and Jennifer Chambers of Madisonville; a stepbrother, David Burden of Owensboro; and two stepsisters, Tena Nixon of Selmer, Tenn., and Michele Allhouse of Fort Myers, Fla.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, with Father Pete Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Calhoun cemetery. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento, with prayers said at 7 p.m. today.
