Dolores Howard Lanham

Dolores Howard Lanham, 67, of Owensboro passed away Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at her daughter's house in Pegram, Tenn. She was born in Owensboro to the late Patrick "PM" Howard and Xaveria Coomes Howard. She was a licensed X-ray technician and retired from Wal-Mart Pharmacy. She was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church. She was an active member in the Army of Mary and enjoyed gardening, her pets and being with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Lanham in 2001.

She is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Lanham of Pegram and Jeanette (and Lee) Stewart of Crestview Hills. She has four grandchildren, Chris (and Missy) Key, Jeremy Key, Jason Key and Lee Stewart. She is survived by five brothers, Dr. Carroll Howard of Owensboro, Wallace Howard of Utica, Leonard Howard of Jerseyville, Ill., and Dr. Millard Howard of Tallahassee, Fla., and Doug Howard of Louisville; and one sister, Jean Thompson of Sorgho.

Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday and after 8:30 a.m. on Monday at Glenn Funeral Home. Parrish prayers will be said at 5 p.m. on Sunday with Army of Mary prayers following at 5:30 p.m. Entombment will be in Resurrection cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Right to Life of Owensboro, 1402-C Frederica St., Owensboro, KY 42301.

Charles H. Asbell

CALHOUN - Charles H. Asbell, 59, of Calhoun died there Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at the Sunny Acres Personal Care Facility.

Graveside services: 3 p.m. today at Calhoun cemetery. There will be no public visitation. Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Marian Audrey 'Veachie' Lane

Marian Audrey "Veachie" Lane, 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at Wellington Parc of Owensboro. Born Nov. 26, 1922, in Patesville, Hancock County, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Lane; a daughter, Virginia Christian Stone; and her parents, Martin and Lillian Pryor Veach. She was a Christian and retired from Sears, St. Matthews, in Louisville and operated the Breeze Inn in Hawesville.

She is survived by a daughter, Aline Leckie of Florida; three brothers, Herman Veach of Hawesville and Basil Veach and Marshal Veach, both of Pellville; a sister, Inabell (Auther) Cooper of Reynolds Station; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to West Point Baptist Church Building Fund.

Jennie 'Jenna' T. Bennett

Jennie "Jenna" T. Bennett, 72, of 4107 Masonwoods Lane, Owensboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born on Oct. 27, 1931, in Benton to the late Edward Powell Tichenor and Bessie (Brown) Tichenor. She was previously employed as a buyer and bookkeeper for Subletts Inc. She was a member of Third Baptist Church and attended Owensboro Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James S. Bennett Sr., on Feb. 2, 1987; and by a son-in-law, Chuck Helms Jr., on June 8, 1999.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Stan and Cathy Bennett; two daughters, Vicki L. Helms and Sandra Cox; five grandsons, Jimmie Bennett, Jerry Bennett, R.J. Cox Jr., Charley Helms III and Ben Helms; a great-grandchild, Kennedy Grace Bennett; a special cousin, Doug Webster; and a sister-in-law, Helen Bennett, all of Owensboro.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Elmwood cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Delancey Street Foundation, attention: Jerry Raymond, 600 Embarcadero St., San Francisco, CA 94107.

Cynthia 'Cindy' Denise Epley

SUWANEE, Ga. - Cynthia "Cindy" Denise Epley, 44, of Suwanee died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, following a short illness. Cindy was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister. Her vibrant, energetic and loving personality was inspiring to all she knew and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Cindy is survived by her husband, Lynn Epley; a daughter, Lindsey Epley; and a son, Chase Epley, all residing in Suwanee. She is also survived by parents Bill and Louise White of Central City; father and mother-in-law Bobby and Belva Epley of Owensboro; a sister, Tally Shaw of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Timmy White of Bremen; nephews Spencer and Connor Shaw of Orlando; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Cindy was the granddaughter of the late Eva Jean Edwards of Central City.

In addition to creating a loving and supportive home environment for her family, Cindy built a brilliant career in the legal field and was most recently employed by Carothers & Mitchell, Attorneys at Law, in Buford, Ga., as a legal assistant. Prior to joining Carothers & Mitchell, she spent 12 years as a court reporter and judge's assistant for the Honorable Judge Elsworth, Superior Courts, Warrick County, in Boonville, Ind.

A memorial services will be held at Woodson Missionary Baptist Church in Powderly. Date and time are pending.

Meta L. Gannon-Durkee

RICE LAKE, Wis. - Meta L. Gannon-Durkee, 80, of Rice Lake died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at her home. The former Meta Kelly was born to Rollie and Nellie (Mattingly) Kelly in Maceo on Sept. 11, 1924. She attended grade school in Maceo and high school in Owensboro. Meta attended business college in Owensboro, which was a major influence on her life. She then attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, majoring in sociology, English and literature. After graduated with a liberal arts degree she married Patrick Gannon on July 2, 1948, in Milwaukee. They resided in Milwaukee briefly and moved to Rice Lake in 1948, where Patrick joined his father in the Gannon and Gannon Law Practice, while she raised a family of nine children. After Patrick's death in 1973, she became employed at First National Bank in Rice Lake. Meta later obtained her real estate broker's license and at 58 co-founded Associated Realty in Rice Lake. She had also served on the Rice Lake City Council. Meta was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Fortnightly in Rice Lake.

Meta Gannon-Durkee is survived by her husband, Stu Durkee of Rice Lake; five daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Bob Feider of Sheboygan, Wis., Sally and Uli Llull of Evergreen, Colo., Katy Gannon of Janesville, Wis., Mary and Dan Adams of Hinsdale, Ill., and Jane and Billy McWilliams of Bozeman, Mont.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick Jr. and Lynn Gannon of Sherwood, Ore., Dr. Daniel and Pam Gannon of Bozeman, Kelly and Jennie Gannon of Fairplay, Colo., and Joe and Pam Gannon of Rice Lake; 15 grandchildren; and a sister, Zino Kelly Smith of Henderson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Gannon; and a grandson, Joseph Feider.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rice Lake, with Father James Powers and Father Daniel Gannon concelebrating. Interment will be in St. Joseph's cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Appleyard's Home for Funerals and for an hour at the church on Saturday.

Benjamin F. McCormick

HARTFORD - Ben Franklin McCormick Sr., 94, of 341 Beulah Church Road, Hartford, died at 4:05 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at home. He was born June 17, 1910, in Artesia, N.M., to the late Benjamin Franklin McCormick and Cleora Ward. He worked for General Electric for 23 1/2 years in Owensboro as a receiving and shipping clerk and was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church in Beaver Dam. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Carter McCormick, on Aug. 21, 2004; and a son, Benjamin Franklin McCormick, in 1956.

Survivors include a son, Carl T. McCormick and his wife, Sandra "Sandy," of Baltimore; a daughter, Marvadine Barrow and her husband, W.H. "Bill," of Hartford; two grandsons, Bobby Wayne Taylor of Owensboro and Michael McCormick of Panama City, Fla.; four great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Mary Ambrose of Rural Route 1 in Whitesville.

Services are at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home, with Pastor Jerry Brown officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Beulah Cumberland Presbyterian Church cemetery in Ohio County.

James Michael Murphy

James Michael Murphy, 54, of Owensboro died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004. Born Jan. 16, 1950, in Owensboro, he was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church. He served as commander of the Owensboro Post VFW and was a member of DAV, AMVETS and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his father, Hugh "Red" Murphy; and a grandson, Noah Thomas.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Helen Murphy; six children, Heather McNeiley, Traci, Rebecca, Joseph H., Amanda and Michael Murphy; eight grandchildren, Haley Scalf, Justin Bowlds, Jordan, Brittany, Joey, Adam, Kiara and Samara Murphy; two brothers, Thomas H. and William E. Murphy; and six sisters, Peggy McCarthy, Sr. Nancy Murphy, Monica Blandford, Sally Buford, Betty Rogers and Mary Rose Riney.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at Glenn Funeral Chapel, with burial following in St. Alphonsus cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 8:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

Lonnie A. Sumner Jr.

Lonnie A. Sumner Jr., 53, of 755 Sturgeon Ave., Owensboro, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at his home. He was born in Daviess County to the late Lonnie and Dorothy Edwards Sumner Sr. He was a self-employed property maintainer and had also worked at Hunter-Douglas Co. He was a UK basketball fan and enjoyed NASCAR, all sports, carpentry, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He also coached baseball for several years in the Daviess County Playground Association. He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Ervin, on April 13, 2003.

Surviving is his wife of 32 years, Pamelia Sumner; two sons and their wives, Jeff and Bridget Sumner of Owensboro and Brian James and Emily Sumner of Evansville; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Jr., Justin and Jacob Sumner, all of Owensboro, and Addison Sumner of Evansville; four brothers, William, Clifton and Claudie Sumner, all of Owensboro, and Jerry Sumner of Whitesville; and four sisters, Lydia Griffin, Brenda Shock and Nettie Sumner, all of Owensboro, and Josephine Cockrell of Maceo.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at Glenn Funeral Home chapel, with burial following in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Virginia Higginbotham Clark

Virginia Higginbotham Clark of 3002 Sterling Court, Owensboro, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born in Warren County to the late Tandy and Julia Higginbotham. She was a member of Eaton Memorial Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Clark Sr., in 1982; a stepson, Marvin Clark Jr.; her brothers, James Higginbotham, Marvin Higginbotham, Elmer Higginbotham and Robert Higginbotham; and her sister, Pauline Brown.

Survivors include a stepson, Roger Clark of Newburgh, Ind.; four stepgrandchildren, Stephen D. Clark of Owensboro, Cynthia Douthit of Winston-Salem, N.C., Alan Clark of Evansville and Derek Clark of Newburgh; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Entombment is in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Sue Evelyn Haight

SWANNANOA, N.C. - Sue Evelyn Farley Haight, 78, of Swannanoa died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004. A native of Owensboro, she was the daughter of the late Rudy Frances and Rita Bell Drewey. She was a member of the Swannanoa Valley Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Lewis John Haight; four children, Jonathan G. Haight, Linda S. Coutryer, Jerry F. Haight and Donna R. Haight; a brother, Yeamon Farley; a sister, Marge Downing; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society. A service and burial were held Monday, Oct. 18, at Western Carolina State Veterans cemetery.
