James L. 'Jimmy' Edge

James L. "Jimmy" Edge, 62, of 1639 Griffith Ave., Owensboro, passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, on the 18th hole of Owensboro Country Club. He was born in Daviess County and was the owner of the Innovative Filter Co. He had previously been self-employed for the past 30 years. He was a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served as a drill sergeant in the 100th Division of the Army Reserve. He very much loved his Roman Catholic faith. He was actively involved for more than 40 years in youth athletics, including coaching, league presidents, fund-raising and booster clubs. He loved his 17 years coaching in the Catholic Youth Football League. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, golfing, horse racing, fishing and playing Texas Hold 'em. He was preceded in death by his father, Alphonsus Edge, on Sept. 4, 1984.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Sarah Steele Edge; his mother, Agnes Gertrude Edge of Owensboro; two daughters, Anne Michelle and her husband, Scott Jones, of Russellville and Laura Ruth Edge of Owensboro; five sons, Michael and his wife, Tina Edge, James and his wife, Jackie Edge, John Timothy Edge, Robert Andrew and his wife, Katie Edge, and Nicholas Edge, all of Owensboro; six grandchildren, a sister, Mary Jo Harmon of Temple City, Calif.; and a brother, Pat Edge of Owensboro.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at Blessed Mother Catholic Church, with burial following in Mater Dolorosa cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 8:30 a.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home. Prayers will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made for Masses or to the Carmel Home, 2501 Old Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303 or to the Passionist Nuns Monastery, 8564 Crisp Road, Whitesville, KY 42378.

Hoover L. 'Hoot' Gibson

Hoover L. "Hoot" Gibson, 87, of 2147 Griffith Ave., Owensboro, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at his home. He was born Sept. 17, 1917, in Arkansas City, Kan., to the late Roy and Della (Brandhouse) Gibson. He graduated from the University of Tulsa with a B.S. degree in petroleum engineering. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While in the Navy, he graduated from Penn State with a degree in diesel engineering and was assigned to teaching engineering at Cornell University. After the war, he helped Washington, D.C. and other cities in their conversion to natural gas. He joined Texas Gas Corp. in Memphis in 1948 and was transferred to Owensboro in 1950. He retired from Texas Gas in 1982 as chief engineer of design and construction. He was a former member of the local Kiwanis Club and F&AM No. 130 Masonic Lodge. He belonged to the Kentucky Society of Professional and Mechanical Engineers. He was a current member of the Henry M. Wilson Discussion Group, a member of the Owensboro Country Club for 54 years and a member of First Christian Church. He loved golf, bridge and UK basketball. He was preceded in death by his wife, Claire Rogers Gibson, on Nov. 15, 2001.

He is survived by a son, Ronald R. Gibson of Louisville; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Stuart Augenstein of Owensboro; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Taylor, Amy Connaughton, Jennifer Archibald, Adam Augenstein, Alex Augenstein and Abbe Augenstein; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ernest "Jack" Gibson of Clearwater, Fla.; and a sister, Mary Edith Hadley of Bartlesville, Okla.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Entombment is in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Luke Woodward Memorial Fund, c/o First Christian Church, 700 J.R. Miller Blvd., Owensboro, KY 42303 or to the Humane Society, 3101 W. Second St., Owensboro, KY 42301.

Ray Louis Kennedy

Ray Louis Kennedy, 75, of 4609 Crescent Hill Drive, Owensboro, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at his home. He was born Oct. 25, 1929, in Owensboro to the late Abe Henry and Ella Ray (Edmondson) Kennedy. He was retired from BellSouth Telephone. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Tiffany Kennedy, in 1992.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Nancy Childers Kennedy; a son, Ray Walker Kennedy; and a brother, Truman Kennedy, both of Owensboro.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel, with Dr. David Nelson and the Rev. Clarence Nemitz officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Telephone Pioneers Christmas Wish, c/o Sally Davenport, 4434 Wilderness Trace, Owensboro, KY 42303.

Sybil S. Robinson

BREMEN - Sybil S. Robinson, 94, of 336 Buttermilk Road, Bremen, died at 4:25 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Maple Manor Nursing Home. She was born March 24, 1910, in Butler County. She retired from Bremen High School and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Robinson; and a son, Doris Joe Robinson.

Survivors include a son, Billy Gene (Barbara) Robinson of Bremen; a daughter, Vrylena (Don) Gish of Greenville; seven grandchildren, Jackie Kirtley, Ricky Robinson, Brian Robinson, Mike Robinson, Karen Wethington, Michelle Bass and Cheri Fogle; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, with Leroy Rearden officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem cemetery in Bremen. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today, Oct. 30, at the funeral home. Eastern Star services are at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Grant W. 'G.W.' Rusher

FORDSVILLE - Grant W. "G.W." Rusher, 70, of Fordsville died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Fordsville, was retired from National Southwire and was a member of Church of God of Prophecy in Fordsville. He was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Rusher, in 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Bates Rusher of Fordsville; two sons, Dennis Rusher and wife, Donna, of Fordsville and William Rusher and wife, Betty, of Whitesville; two brothers, Paul Rusher of Fordsville and Millard Rusher Jr. of Louisville; three sisters, Vivian Chappel of Owensboro and Geneva Seaton and Ina Coyle, both of Louisville; six grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville, with burial in Fordsville cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

William Boyd 'Bill' Taylor

BEAVER DAM - William Boyd "Bill" Taylor, 55, of Beaver Dam died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at his residence. He was a retired truck driver and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include three sons, Jesse Koenig, Anthony Koenig and William Taylor; two daughters, Rebecca Files and Shannon Cravens; his mother, Nellie V. Taylor; a brother, Jay Taylor; and a sister, Birdia Allen.

Services: 1 p.m. Sunday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial: Cane Run cemetery in Horse Branch. Visitation: From 1 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Catherine Thomas

HARTFORD - Catherine Thomas, 69, of Hartford died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at her home. She retired from Thomas Industries in Beaver Dam.

Survivors include a son, Don Thomas; a stepson, Leroy Davis; two daughters, June Hamilton and Charlotte Pollock; four brothers, Imon Lee Ballard, J.R. Ballard, Alva Ray "Butch" Ballard and James Norman Ballard; and two sisters, Mary Rowan and Ann Duvalle.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial: Patterson cemetery in Ohio County. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Justine Howard
10/29/2004

Justine Howard, 88, of Whitesville died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Leisure Years Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church and a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, dancing, gardening and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Oscar Howard, in September 1988; and a grandson, Jeff Dickens, on May 21, 1981.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Dickens of Whitesville; four sons, Gary C. and James D. Howard, both of Whitesville, Larry R. Howard of Philpot and Ronnie Howard of Knottsville; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anita Howard of Knottsville and Evelyn Wilkerson of Owensboro.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. today and again after 9 a.m. Saturday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Prayers will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

William Orville Rowland
10/29/2004

CLOVERPORT - William Orville Rowland, 59, of Cloverport died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, in Frisco, Colo. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include two sisters, Nell Kaiser and Ann Rowland.

Graveside memorial services: 1 p.m. Sunday at Cloverport cemetery. Wallace Funeral Home in Cloverport is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Melvin Payne
10/28/2004

Thomas Melvin Payne, 47, of 736 Leitchfield Road, Owensboro, died at 10:28 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born Dec. 6, 1956, in Owensboro. He is currently walking and talking with the angels, something he never had the opportunity to do here on Earth. He was a member of the Catholic faith and enjoyed Charley Pride music. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles P. Payne.

Survivors include his mother, Carole Jean Payne of Owensboro; two brothers, Charles Haven Payne and Steve Payne, both of Owensboro; two sisters, Cheryl Ann Roberts and Kathryn Lynn Polites, both of Owensboro; and many, many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom cared for him very much.

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home chapel. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Pat Bittel will officiate.
