Fred H. Johnson

Fred H. Johnson, 78, of Owensboro passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at Wellington Parc. He was born in Louisville on Jan. 8, 1926, to the late Henry F. Johnson and Lizetta Hoffman Johnson. Mr. Johnson had been a member of First Christian Church of Owensboro since he left the Armed Services and moved to Owensboro in 1954. He was a member of Friendship Sunday school class and was very active in church with the Youth Group. He was former elder and deacon. He served as a lay minister for the Baskett Christian Church for six years. After coming to Owensboro, Mr. Johnson joined Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. as an agent and consultant and retired from Met. Life after 23 years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Gail Johnson, in 1971.

Mr. Johnson served in the Army for nine years, beginning in World War II (1944 to 1953). He served in the European Theater, was in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Combat Infantry Badge for four years of combat service and the Bronze Star. Mr. Johnson left active service to move his family to Owensboro, so that his daughter, Sharon Gail Johnson, could attend The Wendell Foster Spastic Children's Home. He then served as a warrant officer in the Army Reserve for three years. He and his wife, Mary, were responsible for founding the Parent's Club for the Wendell Foster Center.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Bell Johnson. He is also survived by a son, Chris W. Johnson and wife, Tammy, of Owensboro; a sister, Henrietta Eberhard of Louisville; a brother, Thomas P. Johnson of St. Louis; and two grandchildren, Keri Ann Johnson and Eric Michael Johnson.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Glenn Funeral Home chapel. Family and friends can pay respects from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., before the service, with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy can be made to First Christian Church, 700 J.R. Miller Blvd., Owensboro, KY 42303.

Kenneth David Murphy

Kenneth David Murphy, 50, of Owensboro died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at his home. Born Aug. 14, 1954, to the late Lawrence and Hazel Johnson Murphy, he was a member of Little Union Baptist Church. He enjoyed motorcycles. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Tinsley, in 2003.

Survivors include a daughter, Kristel Kimbley of Owensboro; six sisters, Vicki Murphy and Sandra Rhodes of Owensboro, Glenda Kirkwood and Deloris Murphy of Calhoun, Karla Adams of Lewisport and Connie Black of Flint, Mich.; four brothers, Billy Murphy of Calhoun, Gary Murphy and Robert Murphy, both of Owensboro, and Tony Murphy of Lewisport; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services are at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Glenn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Joseph Albert Mattingly

Joseph Albert Mattingly, 78, of Yelvington passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at his home. He was born in Daviess County to the late Albert Murray Mattingly and Angela Flanagan Mattingly. He served in the National Guard in the 201st Engineers Company C and was an Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He worked as a plumber and pipefitter at Owensboro Plumbing & Heating and was a 50-year member and retired from Local 633. He was a member of First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ. He enjoyed farming and raising cattle.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha Wagner Mattingly. He is also survived by one daughter, Ann M. Boone of Yelvington; one granddaughter, Valarie A. Boone of Yelvington; two sisters, Theresa Toland and Gertrude Pagan, both of Owensboro; and three brothers, James E. Mattingly of Whitesville and John D. Mattingly and Bernard Mattingly, both of Owensboro.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at First Christian Church. Visitation will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens following the service.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to First Christian Church, Memorial Fund, 230 J.R. Miller Blvd., Owensboro, KY 42303 or to the charity of one's choice.

Mary Elizabeth Tichenor Magruder

GLENVILLE - Mary Elizabeth Tichenor Magruder, 88, of Glenville died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. Mary Elizabeth was born Aug. 24, 1916, in Owensboro to the late Charles Owen and Maude Sanders Tichenor and was a 1934 graduate of Daviess County High School and was a loyal member of the Glenville Baptist Church for more than 70 years. At Glenville Baptist Church she was active teaching Sunday school in the children's department for more than 40 years, was an honorary member of the church choir and was also a member of the Women on Missions. Mary Elizabeth was a loving wife, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her husband of 68 years, Robert "Bob" Magruder, died Sept. 10, 2002. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Michael Keith Magruder, who died July 28, 1983, in Iowa and Sgt. David Byron Magruder who died May 16, 1970, in Vietnam; by a sister, Thelma Shelton; by a brother, Charles Owen Tichenor; and by two nephews, O.L. "Joe" Shelton and James Edgar Shelton.

Survivors include two grandsons, Byron Keith Magruder and his companion, Colleen McCabe, of Clearwater, Fla., and Kevin Scot Magruder of his wife Natalie, of Altoona, Wis.; three great-grandsons, Chase Michael Magruder, Tanner Scot Magruder and Cade Everett Magruder, all of Altoona; a daughter-in-law, Bonita Sue Magruder of Eau Claire, Wis.; a nephew, William Owen Shelton of Owensboro; a great-niece, Jo Ann Rice of Maceo; and several other great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Glenville Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Glenville Baptist cemetery. Friends may visit with the Magruder family from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the Glenville Baptist Church.

The Magruder family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Glenville Baptist cemetery Fund, c/o Gene Wilkerson, 10772 Kentucky 81, Utica, KY 42376. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at Musters in Calhoun.

Joyce Leary Howard

FORDSVILLE - Joyce Leary Howard, 32, of Fordsville died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Jason Howard; a daughter, Marie Howard; a stepdaughter, Chelsey Howard; her mother, Joyce Bratcher; and two brothers, Robert Leary and Timmie Leary.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday at Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville. Burial: Fordsville cemetery. Visitation: From 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Joyce Leary Howard Memorial Fund.

Elbert Eugene Young

BOWLING GREEN - Elbert Eugene Young, 71, of Bowling Green died at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at his home. He was born Jan. 20, 1933, in McLean County to the late Jesse Ray Young and Bertha Thompson Young. He retired from Eaton and retired as a CPO with the U.S. Navy in 1972. He was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church and a member of Gideon International and was a volunteer at the Medical Center. He was a Mason and a member of BGAMUG.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sue Young of Bowling Green; two sons, John Mark Young of Washington D.C., and Christopher Young and wife Amy of Alvaton; two daughters, Cindy Jones and husband Barry of Alvaton and Leca Duke and husband Gary of Odenton, Md.; a brother, Alton Young of Calhoun; three sisters, Janice Young of Calhoun, Elizabeth McLaughlin of Calhoun and Mary Jane Towery of Calhoun; and grandchildren, Jonathan and Brie Jones, Amanda Duke, Eli, Becca and Olivia Young.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Bowling Green. Interment will be in Arlington cemetery in Arlington Va., at a later date. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church Christian Life Center, 621 E. Chestnut, Bowling Green, KY 42101 or Gideons International. J.C. Kirby & Son Broadway Chapel in Bowling Green is in charge of arrangements.

Robert E. 'Bob Ed' Kipling

CENTRAL CITY - Robert E. "Bob Ed" Kipling, 77, of 325 South Cherry Hill Road, Central City, died at 1:45 p.m., Sunday, July 24, 2005, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. He was born Feb. 7, 1928, in Muhlenberg County. He retired as a coal miner after 29 years from Gibraltar Coal Mines and was a member of Cherry Hill Baptist Church. He was a Blue Lodge Mason and a member of Hazel Creek Lodge No. 842, Scottish Rite and Rizpah Shriners Temple. He was a Korean War veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Foley Kipling, in 1999; a son, Robert E. Kipling III; and his parents, Robert E. and Pearl Baker Kipling.

Survivors include two sons, Robert E. IV (Robby and Sue) Kipling and Richard L. (Ricky and Mary Jane) Kipling, all of Central City; three grandchildren, Debra Ann Kipling, Adam Kipling and Jordan Kipling, all of Central City; five stepgrandchildren; a brother, Earl C. Kipling of White Plains; three sisters, Merle Barnes, Margaret Christ and Kathleen Robards; and a special friend, Mildred Pannell.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, with the Rev. Gene Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Central City. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. today.

Nathaniel Austin Dunn

Nathaniel Austin Dunn, 49, of Graham died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at 3 p.m. in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. He was born in Muhlenberg County on Dec. 4, 1955, the son of Melvin and Mary Kathryn Dunn. He was a truck driver and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Dunn Steele; two sons, Austin Wayne Dunn and Melvin Ray Dunn; one daughter, Kathryn Marie Dunn; one sister, Pat (Jimmie) Brewer of Greenville; four brothers, Danny (Jean) Dunn, Donald (Anita) Dunn and Tindell Dunn, all of Greenville, and Timmie (Elaine) Dunn of Hopkinsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. from Gary's Funeral Home by the Rev. Danny Mooneyhan. Burial will be in Green's Chapel Church cemetery. Friends may call after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Ellen Stanley Deering
08/28/2005

Mary Ellen Stanley Deering, 59, of Greenville died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Edward Deering and Bryan Deering.

Services are private. Glenn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jeremy Adam Burk

HAWESVILLE - Jeremy Adam Burk, 26, of Hawesville died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Daviess County. He was born in Tell City, Ind., on June 9, 1979, to John and Mary Elaine Morrison Burk. He was employed at Kinder-Morgan in Hawesville and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his mother and her husband, Elaine and William Harding of Tell City; his father, John Burk of Hawesville; half brothers, David and Brett; half sisters, Lucy, Kristin, Patricia and Tawny; his maternal grandmother, Mildred Jean Morrison of Hawesville; and his stepgrandmother, Betty Jene Harding of Tell City.

Services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville with the Rev. Brian Adkins officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary in Hawesville. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 7 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home.
