Don Roberts

Donald U. Roberts, 63, of Owensboro passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on March 22, 1942, in Daviess County to the late Ureary and Flossie Roberts. He was employed at Ken-Tron Manufacturing for 40 years, where he was a board member and senior vice president. He was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church. Don was past president of the Owensboro Transportation Club, a former board member of the chamber of commerce, a former board member of the Cliff Hagan Boys Club and an Army veteran. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his beloved dog, Abby. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Roberts.

He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Janet Mischel Roberts; his children, Jennifer (Brian) Wedding of Henderson, John (Tessa) Alvey of Owensboro, Darryl Roberts of Louisville, Donald Roberts of Owesboro and Robin Roberts of Owensboro; seven grandchildren, Reece Peach, Jackson Wedding, Emily and Jacob Alvey, Jennifer, Andrea and Tiffany Roberts; a brother, Jimmy Roberts of Evansville; two sisters, Diane King and Darlene (Tom) Webb, all of Elizabethtown; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Immaculate Catholic Church. Burial is in Resurrection cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at James H. Davis Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Owensboro Catholic High School, 1524 West Parrish Ave., Owensboro, KY 42301, or Owensboro Humane Society.

Robert Sanders

CLOVERPORT - Robert Sanders, 69, of Cloverport died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at Norton Hospital in Louisville. He worked at TARC as a bus driver.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Sanders; three sons, Mark Sanders, Quincy Sanders and Robert Sanders; two brothers, Larry Sanders and Roy Sanders; and a sister, Shirley Weedman.

Graveside services: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sanders Family cemetery on Hardin Mills Road South. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Burns Funeral Home in Cloverport.

Carrel K. Sumner

BOWLING GREEN - Carrel K. Sumner, 66, of Bowling Green died at 2:05 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at his home. He was born Jan. 25, 1939, and was chief executive officer for Commonwealth Specialty Hospital in Bowling Green. He began his career in healthcare in 1957 as an orderly at Bowling Green-Warren County Hospital and continued to work with Commonwealth Health Corp. and The Medical Center, where he was currently serving as chief executive officer for the Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital. The Greenville native was also a former teacher at Greenville High School. He currently taught the adult Sunday school class at Plano Baptist Church, where he was a member. He was a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and served on various health-related committees at Western Kentucky University, where he was an alumnus. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Florence Sumner.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Sumner of Bowling Green; two daughters, Emily Sumner of Bowling Green and Terri Tyler and husband, Rico, of Franklin; two brothers, Harold E. Sumner and wife, Betty, of Greenville and Bob Cummings and his wife, Patty, of Houston; two grandchildren, Ryan and Robin Tyler of Franklin; a brother-in-law, Buell Snyder and wife, Judy, of Shephardsville; a sister-in-law, Betty Hardison of Bowling Green; his mother-in-law, Jean Snyder of Clarkson; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapels, Inc., Lovers Lane chapel, in Bowling Green. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and after 8 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Michael D. Whitely

HORSE BRANCH - Michael D. Whitely, 46, of Horse Branch died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was a security guard at Peabody Coal Co. and a member of Church of God.

Survivors include his parents, the Rev. Earnest and Ijean Carter Whitely; his wife, Blenda Flener Whitely; three sons, Steven Whitely, Christopher Whitely and Sean Whitely; a daughter, Nicah Duke; a brother, Jonathan Whitely; and a sister, Belenda O'Neal.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial: Sunnyside cemetery in Beaver Dam. Visitation: From 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Paul B. Stovall
09/11/2005

Paul B. Stovall, 81, of 1951 Airport Road, Owensboro, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at his home. The Muhlenberg County native was the son of the late Earl and Eula Mae Vincent Stovall.

The World War II veteran fought on many fronts in the Pacific Theater including the first wave at Iwo Jima as a member of the 4th Marine Division. He was honorably discharged in November 1945 and was a proud member of the Marine Corps League and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He retired from the Life Insurance Co. of Georgia in 1987 after having worked as a sales manager and district manager for 38 years.

He was a faithful member of Owensboro Christian Church for 48 years serving as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, chairman of the deacons and joint board, treasurer, trustee and charter member of the Senior Ambassadors and Senior Choir.

He was a past member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and Odd Fellows and had served on the board of directors of the March of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy Association and Life Underwriters Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie Forgy Stovall, who died in March 2003; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Heady Rush.

Survivors include a daughter, Benita Heady, and her husband, Richard, of Yelvington; two sons, Stephen Stovall and his wife, Teresa, of Bowling Green and Chris Stovall and his wife, Susy, of Atlanta; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Forrest Stovall of Owensboro and Harrell Stovall of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at Owensboro Christian Church with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens Field of Honor. Military honors will be rendered by VFW Post 696. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after noon at Owensboro Christian Church on Monday.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to LifePoint Christian Church, 5000 McGinnis Ferry Road, Alpharetta, GA 30005 or to the Christian Student Fellowship, 1654 Normal St., Bowling Green, KY 42101.

Michael Erben Reeder

Michael Erben Reeder, 64, formerly of Owensboro, passed away at his home in Key West, Fla., Monday, Sept. 5, 2005. He was born June 10, 1941, in Paducah to the late Erben Wesley and Sarah Francis Reeder. He was a retired police officer for Key West and worked for BellSouth in Owensboro for several years. He was a pilot for the sheriff's department in Monroe County, Florida. He served eight years with the U.S. Air Force. He was an avid boater and enjoyed spending time with his dog, Princess.

He will be sadly missed by his three sons, Steve Reeder and his wife, Tammy, of Paducah, Keith Reeder and his wife, Julie, of Turlock, Calif., and Kenneth Reeder of Utica; daughter, Sharon Wallace and her husband, Rick, of Owensboro; and their mother, Dorothy Reeder of Vero Beach, Fla.; his wife, Vicki, and their daughter, Lisa, of Key West; two sisters, Janice Ladd and her husband, Jimmy, of Paducah and Phyllis Marrs of Owensboro; four grandchildren, Travis Reeder of Paducah, Derek Polston of Owensboro and Sarah and Tyler Reeder of Turlock; one great-granddaughter, Jayce Rae Reeder; and one nephew and three nieces.

A private service was held at Dean-Lopez Funeral Home in Key West. A memorial service will be held in his hometown of Paducah.

Joey Goodman

BEAVER DAM - Joey Goodman, 58, of Beaver Dam died Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at his home. He was born in Ohio County to the late Willie Wesley and Susie Bell Goodman. He retired from Young Manufacturing Co. in Beaver Dam after 33 years and was a member of McHenry Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his parents; and three grandchildren, Cortney Lachelle Goodman, Kayla Mae Leach and Baby Leach.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Goodman; sons, Jody and wife Mary Goodman of Horse Branch and Jamie and wife Brandy Goodman of Rochester; a daughter, Brandy Goodman Leach of Beaver Dam; and eight grandchildren, Dakota, Seaira, Montana, Savanna, Olivia and Alyson Goodman and Kelsey and Kara Leach.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam with the Rev. Scott Fleener officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside cemetery in Beaver Dam. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.

Phronia B. Estes

HAWESVILLE - Phronia B. Estes, 94, of Hawesville died Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at 2:15 p.m. at her home. She was born in Lewisport on Oct. 26, 1910, to the late Jim and Lavenia Hurst Cavendar. She was a Christian woman of the Baptist faith. Her hobbies were reading the Bible and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Estes, in 1981; a daughter, Jessie Coultas, in 1993; and a son, David Lee Estes, in 1951.

Survivors include five daughters, Margie Estes Rayman, Sylvia Estes Stinnett, Betty Estes Bennett and Cora Estes Hardin, all of Owensboro, and Lillie Estes Patton of Tulsa, Okla.; four sons, Frankie Estes and Lindy Estes of Hawesville, Arthur Estes of Ingalls, Ind., and John Estes of Owensboro; 34 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville. Burial will be in Lewisport cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 7 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Thurman Henry Ellis

SLAUGHTERS - Thurman Henry Ellis, 77, of Slaughters passed away at 2 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at his home.

He was born in Hopkins County on May 29, 1928, to the late John Henry and Nadine (Austin) Ellis. He was a retired equipment operator at Peabody Coal Company's Gibraltar Mine in Muhlenberg County and a retired farmer. He was also an avid fisherman and was of the General Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Betty (Leath) Ellis; a son, Wade Ellis of Madisonville; five daughters, Debbie Ellis Wilson of Onton, Phyllis Ellis Hodges and Abby Ellis, both of Ashbyburg, Laura Kemp of Jackson, Tenn., and Beth Stutler of Madisonville; a sister, Helen Harbison of Evansville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Tompkins Funeral Home Slaughters-Hanson Chapel. The Rev. Harry Baldwin and the Rev. Alec Hensley will officiate. Burial will be in Onton cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 3 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Gilead General Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
