Donald Goetz Sr. ran produce firm

Donald E. Goetz Sr. had two simple credos for operating a business: "Keep it simple" and "Be honest with the customer."

Customers and friends alike knew he was a man to be trusted, said his son, Donald E. Goetz Jr. of Cincinnati:

"To him, a handshake was as good as a piece of paper."

Mr. Goetz, 65, retired president of Fries Brothers Produce in Cincinnati, died at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas.

Mr. Goetz lived in Highland Heights and started working for Fries as a truck driver in 1951. He retired last year as owner and president of the company.

"Anybody who ever met him wasn't likely to forget him," the younger Goetz said. "My dad had a fantastic sense of humor. He liked to make people laugh, and he was good at it."

Mr. Goetz started driving trucks for Fries in 1951, a year before he married Virginia Mary Yates. They raised five children.

In 1958, he took a second job as a Kentucky Post carrier.

"He would get up at 4 a.m. to get to the produce house and make his deliveries. Then he'd pick up the papers at noon and deliver them until 4 or 5 p.m.," his son said.

At Fries, he advanced from truck driver to sales executive. In 1974, Mr. Goetz was one of four employees who bought the company. He became president and eventually the sole owner.

By then, his son, Donald Jr., had been working with him. His son took over the route and also started working at Fries.

"He taught me the produce business from the inside out," his son said. Mr. Goetz retired in 1997, and his son is now the second-generation president of Fries Brothers.

"He was proud of building this company, and he was proud of his family," his son said.

Other survivors include his wife, Virginia Mary Yates Goetz; daughters, Donna "Peachy" McClure and Darlene Linkugel of Florence, and Dianne Ruschman of Alexandria; a son, Dennis Goetz of Cold Spring; sisters, Betty Saner of Ft. Thomas and Edna Knapp of Cold Spring; 12 grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. The family will receive friends in Memorial Hall at the church immediately after Mass.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church, 4011 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076; Bishop Brossart High School, Jefferson and Grove Streets, Alexandria, Ky. 41001; or St. Henry District High School Building Fund, 3837 Dixie Highway, Erlanger, Ky. 41018.
