Carl Carroll was dedicated to serving Harrison County
Carl Musser Carroll's interest in politics and his reputation in rural Harrison County helped him become a county magistrate and judge in the 1950s.
He served his community by advocating the interests of farmers and working to bring new road projects to the area, said a son, Wayne Carroll of Frankfort.
"I think he just saw it as a challenge," Wayne Carroll said. "He enjoyed working with improving the road system. That was one thing he tried to do."
Mr. Carroll, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at Edgemont Nursing Home in Cynthiana. He was 83.
He was born and raised on a farm with eight brothers and sisters in the Leeslick area of Harrison County.
His father was a livestock trader, which made him - and his family - well-known throughout the small community. Mr. Carroll, his father and siblings all enjoyed politics, Wayne Carroll said.
"They were pretty well-educated, for country folks," he said. "He had sisters who graduated from college and a brother who graduated from business school in Cincinnati. They just took an interest in politics."
Mr. Carroll was married to his high school sweetheart, Stella Casey, for 56 years. She died in 1991. The couple raised their five children on a tobacco farm in Harrison County, where Mr. Carroll was widely known.
In the 1950s, he was appointed county magistrate to fill a vacancy. Not longer after, he became the county judge, a position he held for two terms.
"He was a leader in his community," Wayne Carroll said.
Following his political stint, Mr. Carroll worked off and on for the state and federal departments of agriculture, testing cattle for various diseases, his son said.
He also enjoyed fishing and gardening.
"He loved to fish. He always took it real seriously," Wayne Carroll said. "He didn't let you have a lot of fun, because he was so serious at it, wanting to get up before daylight and fish all night."
Mr. Carroll began working for Frazier Lebus Tobacco Co. in Cynthiana prior to his retirement around the age of 70.
Later in life, he devoted much of his time to growing produce.
"He started out with huge gardens, giving vegetables away," Wayne Carroll said. "Then he finally started selling it. He had a produce stand in Cynthiana until he was about 75 years old."
Mr. Carroll also was a member of Mt. Hope Methodist Church in Harrison County and a former member of White Oak Methodist Church.
He also leaves daughters, Barbara Head Lamm and Marianne Feeback, both of Lexington, and Verna Kendall Parrish of Lawrenceburg; son, Barry Carroll of Wichita, Kan.; a sister, Eleanor Carroll of Cynthiana; brothers, Charles Carroll and Graves Carroll, both of Cynthiana; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 p.m. today at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, with burial in Battlegrove Cemetery
in Cynthiana.
