James Dornbusch, retired officer
James Dornbusch Sr., a retired captain with the Covington Police Department, often worked two or three jobs to support his wife and five children.
Following his daytime shift for the police department, he'd work as a clerk at a small delicatessen on Scott Street. Sometimes, he also worked nights at a local bar, making sure young people were old enough to enter.
And every spring and summer, he organized adult and children's softball leagues in Covington.
"He always kept himself busy. He was awful good to all of us," said his wife, Frances G. Dornbusch.
Mr. Dornbusch, of Florence, died at 12:35 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was 83.
He was born in Cincinnati and raised in Covington. His mother died when he was young, and he and his brother and two sisters spent three years in an orphanage until his father remarried and reclaimed them.
Growing up during the Depression, Mr. Dornbusch quickly learned the value of working. He held several jobs as a young man, caddying and cutting neighbors' lawns.
In his free time, he enjoyed playing football, baseball and basketball, and he also coached a basketball team, Mrs. Dornbusch said.
He met his wife in 1935, and they married in 1940. The couple had their first of five children 19 months before he went into the U.S. Army during World War II.
As a young father and husband, Mr. Dornbusch supported his family by working as a delivery man for Kahn's, Hostess and a dairy company.
"You couldn't get jobs too well back then," Mrs. Dornbusch said.
Then in 1946, he went to work for the Covington Police Department. He retired as captain in 1977.
"Law and order - that's the way he took care of our house, here. He run everything just so," Mrs. Dornbusch said.
He organized adult and youth softball leagues in Covington for more than 20 years. He also organized Northern Kentucky's first umpire association almost 40 years ago, Mrs. Dornbusch said.
When he retired, he worked for the state Environmental Protection Agency, testing rivers, creeks and streams for contaminants.
Mr. Dornbusch also was a member of St. Augustine Church in Covington, the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the Crusaders Club.
