Ft. Mitchell's Mark Riesenberg, devoted to family, people in need

In tough times, people could always count on Mark Thomas Riesenberg being there to help.

The 40-year-old Ft. Mitchell man always made sure people knew they had a friend in him, said his wife of nearly 20 years, Beth Wolnitzek Riesenberg.

"He cared for everybody, and was always there for them," she said. "He just touched so many people."

Mr. Riesenberg died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood after a short battle with cancer.

He was born in Latonia and raised in Edgewood. A 1975 graduate of Covington Catholic High School, he was a talented athlete who played football and ran track.

Mr. Riesenberg graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a degree in business management in 1979. He began work with the Kroger Co. in the late '70s and worked with Kroger for 20 years. He was an account manager in the Grocery Product Group in Cincinnati at his death.

A son, Joseph, and a daughter, Dorothy, both preceded him in death.

"It was just part of Mark's personality to volunteer, but also, after our two children died, that's when he really became active," Mrs. Riesenberg said.

"So many people reached out to us, it was extremely overwhelming - overwhelming in a good way. He realized how important it was to have a friend, especially when there's a hard time, and he always wanted to be there for everybody. He never thought of himself."

Mr. Riesenberg was actively involved with the Covington Catholic Boosters, and volunteered at the Soup Kitchen in Covington, and for Appalachian Outreach, Muscular Dystrophy and the United Way.

He also coached various sports teams for his children and was an avid golfer.

"Mark was a great humanitarian, devoted to his family and a friend to many people," Mrs. Riesenberg said.

"He loved life and lived each day to the fullest."

Other survivors include a daughter, Rachelle, and a son, Ryan, both at home; his parents, Stephen and Arlene Riesenberg of Edgewood; brothers, Paul Riesenberg of Dunedin, Fla., and John Riesenberg of Edgewood; and sisters, Julie Parton of Knoxville, Tenn., Mary Riesenberg Keller of Edgewood, and Jenny Riesenberg of Ft. Wright.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church, Ft. Wright. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. A reception will follow the Mass in the church undercroft. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the Mark Riesenberg Memorial Fund, in care of Marc Menne, Peoples Bank, 111 Lookout Farm Drive, Crestview Hills, Ky. 41017. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
