Florence's Brenda Marshall, music teacher

Brenda Reeves Marshall's life was filled with music.

The Florence woman's talent bloomed early on; as a seventh-grader she played piano in the Boone County High School chorus.

She gave private music lessons for about 25 years - during which time she also went back to school to study music and played in her church orchestra.

Mrs. Marshall died Sunday at her home. She was 47 years old.

She was born and reared in the Hebron area, and began taking piano lessons from her aunt as a child.

"She kind of grew up with it," said her husband, John J. Marshall Jr.

Mrs. Marshall was a 1969 graduate of Boone County High School, where she was a member of the chorus from the seventh grade to the 12th grade.

She married in 1972 and moved with her husband to Lima, Ohio. During the 11 years the couple lived in Lima, they had two sons: John L. Marshall and Joseph E. Marshall.

She also began giving private piano lessons to children and adults, a career that continued when the family returned to Kentucky in 1983.

Mrs. Marshall enrolled in 1987 at Northern Kentucky University, where she "took classes for her own edification," according to her husband.

In 1992 she became one of the first students to earn a piano teacher certificate in a new program at NKU. She graduated with a bachelor of arts in music in December 1995.

"It took her a little over eight years to do it, but she was doing it part-time and we had a couple boys," Marshall said. "So it took a little bit

of time to do it, but she accomplished it.

"She felt that by getting this extra education she would be able to serve her students better."

Mrs. Marshall was a member of the Northern Kentucky, Kentucky and National Music Teachers associations.

She also was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Latonia and especially enjoyed the Berean Class, a Sunday school class for women. At one time, the entire Marshall family played in the church orchestra.

"We were a musical family," John Marshall Jr. said.

He and his younger son Joseph E. Marshall played trumpet, elder son John L. Marshall played saxophone and Mrs. Marshall played a keyboard designed to simulate the sound of a strings section.

Joseph is a senior at Beechwood High School who hopes to make a career of music. John is studying economics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Other survivors include her parents, Louis E. and Gertrude Reeves of Hebron; a sister, Judy Chapman of Hebron; and half-brothers, Carroll McGlasson of Falmouth and Gerald Carringer of Lima, Ohio.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home in Hebron. Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Calvary Baptist Church, W. Southern Ave. and Tibbatts, Latonia, Ky. 41015; or Constance Church of the Brethren, in care of Shirley Peeno, Treasurer, 432 Petersburg Road, Hebron, Ky. 41048.
