For James P. Kavanaugh, badge meant helping others

Although James Patrick Kavanaugh spent 39 years in law enforcement and was an excellent marksman, making arrests wasn't the reason he became a police officer.

Instead, Mr. Kavanaugh, who worked for a number of police agencies, prided himself on helping ordinary citizens and training new officers.

"He was very loving and caring of other people," said Mr. Kavanaugh's wife, Della Kavanaugh. "He was a very humble man."

A Covington native, Mr. Kavanaugh was a retired sergeant with the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport Police Department.

He was also a former deputy sheriff with the Kenton County Sheriff's Department, a former investigator with the Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney's office, and a former California Highway Patrolman.

A former Marine, Mr. Kavanaugh moved to California because the pay was better.

"But he got homesick after a year and came back," Mrs. Kavanaugh said.

Mr. Kavanaugh won shooting contests at the airport and took pride in his accuracy, his wife said.

"He was a beautiful person. He really was," Mrs. Kavanaugh said.
