Vernon Stephens, plumber, electrician

Vernon G. Stephens had an affection for Rabbit Hash, the old store there and similar establishments throughout the rural countryside.

"He liked to ride around the country with his friends. They would talk and stop to talk to people in the little stores. He liked to stop in Rabbit Hash and he knew a lot of people there," said Mr. Stephens' wife, Fay Conner Stephens.

"He didn't do it in the last few years though, because all of his friends were gone," added Mrs. Stephens.

Mr. Stephens, 89, of Union, died Friday in the St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was an independent licensed plumber and electrician, working to a large extent on residential construction. Mr. Stephens worked at his trades until about a decade ago, she said.

Many of his jobs of years back involved electrical service through rural electric cooperatives, Mrs. Stephens said. "They didn't have electrical service in many rural areas in those days, and he worked on bringing it into the homes," she said.

Mr. Stephens was a member of East Bend Baptist Church and Burlington Masonic Lodge No. 264 F&AM. Until recent years Mr. Stephens and his wife made an annual journey to state Masonic meetings in Louisville, she said. After retiring, Mr. Stephens also liked to visit shopping malls and usually found a way to engage other older men in conversations, Mrs. Stephens said.

Along with his trades, Mr. Stephens farmed. "His father farmed, and he farmed too, raising tobacco along with the four children," she said.

Mr. Stephens graduated from high school in Rising Sun, Ind., across from Rabbit Hash, in 1927, his wife said. The couple was married for 65 years.

Other survivors include daughters, Vernice Evans of Verona and Janice Gadd of Union; sons, Dennis Stephens and Philip Stephens, both of Union; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in East Bend Methodist Cemetery, Boone County.

Memorials are suggested to East Bend Methodist Cemetery, in care of Dennis Stephens, 6481 Beaver Road, Union, Ky. 41091.
