Covington church day-care teacher, craftswoman Lela M. Pernell, devoted to family

Lela M. Pernell spent about 25 years teaching children in a day-care program at Southside Baptist Church in Covington.

The Covington resident loved helping the program's 5-year-olds make crafts and ceramics. She taught an evening arts-and-crafts class, as well.

"She was always into some kind of project, making things," said a daughter, Connie Roberts of Covington.

"She liked to work with people, and she liked to work with children."

Mrs. Pernell, 63, died at 10:47 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

She was born and raised in Laurel County and was married about 46 years to Archie Pernell, who died in 1994. They had three children. She was a devoted mother, daughter, neighbor and friend, her daughter said.

"Everybody loved her," Ms. Roberts said. "She was just a really good person. She had a lot of friends."

Mrs. Pernell started teaching at Southside Baptist Church, where she was a member, about 25 years ago. She taught a class of about 15 5- year-olds, Ms. Roberts said.

In the summer, she also helped with summer school, leading classes on how to make crafts.

"She was a very special person to everybody," Ms. Roberts said.

Other survivors include daughters, Diana Sutton and Faye Pernell, both of Covington; a brother, Buddy Overbay of Verona; sisters, Margie McKinley, Martha Tomlin and Christine Carter, all of Florence, and Elesa Beach of Walton; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Southside Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington. Don Catchen and Son Funeral home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Elleanore Jeunette Evans, 86, of Dayton, died at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at Arbors at Milford, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Paul Evans, died in 1974.

Survivors include a son, Paul Evans of Dayton.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright, Ky. 41011.

Paul Grunwaldt, 62, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired Internal Revenue Service agent, and a teacher with Kentucky Business College. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Crestview Hills.

Survivors include sons, David Grunwaldt of Lebanon, Mo., and Darren Grunwaldt of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Lori Bryant of Kalamazoo, Mich.; sisters, Nancy DeVries and Carolyn Vestal, both of Kalamazoo; his fiancee, Zona King of Independence; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Memorials are suggested to the church, 2718 Dixie Highway, Crestview Hills, Ky. 41017. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Flora Bell Howell, 87, of Rincon, Ga., formerly of Warsaw, died Sunday at Memorial Medical Center, Savannah, Ga. She was a homemaker and a member of Rincon Baptist Temple. Her husband, Raymond C. Howell, died in 1988.

Survivors include a son, Shirley James Howell of Ellabell, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery. Memorials are suggested Rincon Baptist Temple, P. O. Box 253, Rincon, Ga. 31326; or American Cancer Society, in care of Susan Exley, 1930 Springfield-Egypt Road, Springfield, Ga. 31329.

George Spike Manning, 63, of Covington, died at 4:12 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington.

Loretta McCormick, 73, of Williamstown, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Ruben McCormick; a son, Troy McCormick of Dry Ridge; daughters, Barbara Lentine of Atlanta, Sharon Ipock and Connie Hornsby, both of Dry Ridge, Bonnie Huff of Louisville and Brenda Fields of Williamstown; brothers, Thomas Cornelius of Laurel, Del., and Morris Goins of Wilmington, Del.; a sister, Agnes Souder of Dry Ridge; 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be private. Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

Margaret White Potter, 82, of Dry Ridge, died Monday at her nephew's home in Florence.

She was a homemaker. Her husband, Fred Potter, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Roger Baldwin of Cleveland, Ark.; a sister, Imogene Thomas of Verona; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Clifford T. Ransom, 78, of Loveland, Ohio, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Tuesday at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati.

Mariam Juanita Reinhart, 71, of Bromley, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired waitress at Clyde's Steak House, Kenton County, and a member of First Baptist Church, Ludlow.

Survivors include her husband, Arnold Reinhart; a daughter, Patricia Ross of Ludlow; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel United Church of Christ, 110 Boone St., Bromley, Ky. 41016.

Raymond August Steinmetz, 72, of Covington, died at 3:45 p.m. Friday at Garrard Convalescent Center in Covington. He was a retired machinist with William Powell Valve Co., Cincinnati, a member of American Legion Post No. 203 in Latonia, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Leona Pricilla Steinmetz; sons, Marc Steinmetz and Doug Steinmetz, both of Covington, and Greg Steinmetz of Taftville, Conn.; daughters, Pamela Steinmetz and Sandra Goddette, both of Uncasville, Conn., and Peggy Stagge of Covington; brothers, Frank Steinmetz of Halls Gap, and Nobel Steinmetz of Hamilton, Ohio; sisters, Shirley Dews of Fairfield, Ohio, and Jane Steinmetz of Hamilton, Ohio; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Burial was in Veterans Administration Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.

Rocxie Sumpter, 38, of Cincinnati, died at 12:49 p.m. Monday at Anderson Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Toby Charles Sumpter of Cincinnati; a daughter, Edna Mae Sumpter, at home; her mother, Edna Sumpter of Corinth; a brother, Frankie Sumpter of Corinth; and sisters, Sharon Walls of Kitts Hill, Ohio, and Annette Sumpter of Corinth.

Services were this morning at Mt. Assembly Church of God, Newport. Burial was in Alexandria Cemetery. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
