Pauline Flynn, Walton farmer, quilter
Pauline C. Flynn loved the land, and she farmed it for much of her 84 years.
Miss Flynn, of Walton, died Saturday morning in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
"She had a love for the beauty of the earth and a love for farming and gardening. She was very knowledgeable about planting and raising animals," said her niece, Rosemary Hoffman.
Miss Flynn and her sister, Beatrice Flynn, also of Walton, worked side by side with their father, George, until his death. The family farmed 200 acres outside Walton beginning in 1919, Miss Hoffman said.
"You could see her out there at about anytime, working in the fields, wearing a denim jacket and jeans. They raised tobacco and had a big herd of cattle," said family friend and former Walton Mayor George "Ab" Ryan.
A cousin of Miss Flynn, the late Dick Ryan, raised tobacco for the Flynns for 47 years. "Pau line was the best landlord a tenant could wish for," Miss Hoffman quoted him as saying.
Miss Flynn loved to sew and make quilts, and the quilts were prized by family members and others who acquired them, said Miss Hoffman.
Her aunt was a member of All Saints Church, Walton, for some 80 years, Miss Hoffman said. She was active in church organizations and was a member of the Altar Society.
She was there from the beginning of the parish, after St. Patrick Church in Verona was closed, Ab Ryan said of Miss Flynn.
Miss Flynn continued to be involved in operation of the St. Patrick Cemetery, and assisted people who wished to bury family members there, said Miss Hoffman.
Other survivors include her sister, Mary Agnes Hoffman, of Walton.
