Ft. Wright's Robert Steltenkamp, devoted to family, church, service

Robert F. "Bob" Steltenkamp of Ft. Wright was a war hero, a terrific salesman and civic-minded member of his church and other community groups.

But to Mr. Steltenkamp's family, he was first and foremost a husband, father and grandfather.

"He was a family man in the truest sense of the word," said a daughter, Dr. Carol Steltenkamp of Lexington.

"He was very supportive of his children and his grandchildren in whatever they chose to do, and he truly was a devoted husband."

Mr. Steltenkamp died of cancer Monday at his home. He was 75.

He was born in Erlanger and grew up in Ft. Thomas. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, and received a Purple Heart when he was injured landing at Iwo Jima.

Mr. Steltenkamp retired in 1981 after working 20 years for the Whirlpool Corp., selling to wholesalers like Swallen's and Steinberg's.

"It suited his personality," Dr. Steltenkamp said. "He was very gregarious and outgoing. He was also very good at it."

Mr. Steltenkamp was a member of St. Agnes Church in Ft. Wright and a past president of the Lookout Heights Civic Club. "He was always busy. He was well-known and well-loved," said Dr. Steltenkamp.

She said her father liked to play golf, but he loved nothing more than being with his family.

"I just don't think there are enough men like him these days that put his family first," she said. "He truly enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. I don't feel as bad for my loss as I do for my children."

The family thought about skipping a baseball tournament Tuesday involving his 18-year-old grandson, Tom Steltenkamp, a pitcher for Covington Catholic High School.

But they decided the elder Mr. Steltenkamp would have wanted them to go, and that he would have been proud to know his grandson pitched a one-hitter to help lead the team to a 14-0 victory over Holmes High School.

Friday will be another bittersweet day. Services are scheduled on what would have been the 50th wedding anniversary for Mr. Steltenkamp and his wife, Becky Martin Steltenkamp.

Other survivors include a son, Steve Steltenkamp of Ft. Wright; and daughters, Marianne Steltenkamp and Jeanne Steltenkamp, both of Ft. Wright; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Agnes Church in Ft. Wright. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home in Erlanger. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell.
