Engineer Eugene G. Smith devoted skills, love to family

Eugene G. Smith was an aerodynamics engineer whose skilled hands matched a keen intellect.

Mr. Smith could sew. He could fix appliances. He could repair cars. He could even build additions to houses.

"He sewed wedding dresses for three of his four daughters," said a son, Thomas Smith of Wilder.

"He would do anything for his wife and children, even if it meant getting up at 1 a.m."

Eugene Smith, 68, of Ft. Thomas, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a retired aerodynamics engineer with General Electric in Evendale and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Smith was born in Covington and raised his family in Ft. Thomas. His children attended Newport Catholic High School and the Smiths were instrumental in producing the annual Turkey Festival at the school.

The Smiths also entertained many children and neighbors at their home, Thomas Smith said.

"There were a lot of us and we all had friends. Everybody in Campbell County had a party at the pool he built at his house in Ft. Thomas," Thomas Smith said.

Mr. Smith enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

"He took care of his grandchildren during the day," Thomas Smith said. "It was his second chance to raise children."

Other survivors include his wife, Jean Smith; sons, Eugene Smith of Ft. Thomas, Michael Smith of Milford, Ohio, Mark Smith of Berkeley, Calif., and Patrick Smith of Alexandria; daughters, Kathy Stucker and Mary Maudlin, both of Bellevue, Pam Adams of Independence and Patricia Miller of Ft. Thomas; and 18 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Saturday at St. Anthony Church, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Hwy., Suite 250, Ft. Wright, Ky., 41011; American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky., 41042; or Children's Hospital, 3333 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45229. Radel Funeral in Newport is in charge of arrangements.
