Sister Elizabeth Gilbert, served others

In her youth, Sister Elizabeth Gilbert lived on a Louisiana farm so isolated that a priest visited her home once a year to say Mass.

From those beginnings, Sister Elizabeth went on to a lifetime in the convent, performing a number of valuable duties, in Covington, La., and then for the last decade at St. Walburg Monastery, Villa Hills.

Sister Elizabeth, 73, died Friday at St. Walburg.

"She was a wonderful person, a most gracious farm girl. She had physical afflictions, but was never down," said Sister Andrea, the sub-prioress of St. Walburg.

Sister Elizabeth worked in the monastery kitchen, the laundry or the infirmary, wherever she was needed, said Sister Andrea.

"There was no one more thoughtful. She always remembered other sisters' birthdays and special occasions with a card," Sister Andrea said. "Sister Elizabeth Gilbert was a very prayerful person, and a lot of prayers will be coming for us now," said Sister Andrea.

Sister Elizabeth and her brother, James Gilbert, a retired teacher in Memphis, Tenn., were very close, and he visited her several times a year at St. Walburg, Sister Andrea said. He is on a tour of Australia, and so far hasn't been reached, she said.

She is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Bright of Fayette, Miss.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at St. Walburg Monastery. A vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the monastery. Burial will be in St. Walburg Cemetery, Villa Hills. Memorials are suggested to 2500 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky. 41017. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
