Teen singer Harold Fightmaster, bacteriologist at National Distillers

Harold Lee Fightmaster never became a star, but people across Greater Cincinnati loved to listen to him croon on the radio.

Fightmaster was a regularly featured singer on the old WSAI radio station and others when he was a teen-ager.

"He wasn't a star, but he had a nice voice," said a brother, Jack Fightmaster of Dry Ridge.

"He sang a lot back when they had people live on the radio, singing. He did a lot of religious singing."

Mr. Fightmaster, of Dry Ridge, died at 9:25 p.m. Sunday at Grant Manor nursing home in Williamstown. He was 76.

He grew up in Covington and graduated from Holmes High School, where he was a member of the glee club and a choir.

"People would tune in when they knew he would be on the radio," Jack Fightmaster said.

Mr. Fightmaster fought in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in an anti-aircraft battalion in the Battle of the Bulge.

When he returned from the war, he went to college at the University of Kentucky, where he studied biology.

He suffered an accident while in school that left him paralyzed for about six months. He was diagnosed with a type of sclerosis that affected his motor and language skills for the rest of his life.

"He never sang again, because it seemed to affect his voice, the paralysis," Jack Fightmaster said. "It somehow affected his lung capacity."

Mr. Fightmaster eventually graduated from UK and took a job with National Distilleries in Cincinnati in the early 1950s. He retired as chief bacteriologist after 30 years.

While he was working at National Distilleries, he also held other jobs, including doing medical technology work for Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati.

He lived much of his life in Park Hills and Edgewood.
