America Herald Spicer, 69, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Church of Christ at Bowlings Creek in Breathitt County. Her husband, Abe Spicer, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Lena Herald of Breathitt County and Mary Spicer, Anita Cole and Kathy Herald of Newport; sons, Luther Spicer, James Spicer, Edward Spicer, Abe Spicer Jr. and Tommy Spicer of Newport; sisters, Tilda Combs of Newport and Clara Turner of Breathitt County; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Friday at Church of Christ at Bowlings Creek, Breathitt County. Burial was in Turner's Cemetery, Breathitt County. Watts Funeral Home, Jackson, was in charge.

Aileen Tiernan, 85, of Ft. Thomas, died Thursday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Joseph J. Tiernan, died in 1987. Survivors include daughters, Patricia Salem of Cincinnati and Marlene Hipple of Ft. Thomas; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Church, Ft. Thomas, with visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, and prayers at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to charity of choice.

Alexandria's Gene F. Petrie, made mark in sales, Masons

Gene Fred Petrie worked right up to the last day of his life.

Mr. Petrie, 84, of Alexandria, died Sunday at his residence.

On Saturday he had worked as a doorman at the Cooper Funeral Home in Grants Lick, a part-time post he had handled for the past 15 years. "He worked two funerals Saturday and when he came home he said he was tired. When I tried to wake him for church this morning, he was gone," Mr. Petrie's daughter, Jenny Walsh, said Sunday.

A member of a pioneering Campbell County family, Mr. Petrie worked as an automobile salesman for much of his life. He worked for Riverside Ford from the late 1960s until the early 1980s, and before that was with Escue Pontiac and several other dealers, Mrs. Walsh said.

"He just knew so many people. We'd travel to Florida and he knew people along the way," said Mr. Petrie's daughter.

After retirement from Riverside Ford, Mr. Petrie worked as a security guard at the Disabled American Veterans headquarters in Cold Spring, and for much of that time also worked at the funeral home, Mrs. Walsh said.

Mr. Petrie was very active in Masonic organizations over the years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 152, Alexandria, where he was a past master and district deputy grand master, and was also a former past master of the Aspen Grove Lodge in Grants Lick, his daughter said.

Mr. Petrie also belonged to the Alexandria Order of Eastern Star 337, where he was a past worthy patron; the Shriners and the Scottish Rite. He traveled to many Grand Lodge meetings, Mrs. Walsh said, and was director of the youth organization of Job's Daughters.

"He took great pride in the youth," said Mrs. Walsh.

Mr. Petrie liked to fish and play golf, his daughter said, and he was also a member of the Oddfellows and Disabled American Veterans. He was an elder at Alexandria Church of Christ.

His wife, Dot Petrie, preceded him in death.

Mr. Petrie leaves another daughter, Edith Gastright of Stuart, Fla.; sons, Russell Petrie of Crystal River, Fla., and Eugene Petrie of Westport, Ind.; a brother, Kenneth Petrie of Port Orange, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Alexandria Church of Christ. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial will be in Peach Grove Cemetery.

Raymond John Arnzen, 79, of Newport, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a retired bottler after 40 years with the Geo. Wiedemann Brewing Co., Newport.

He was a member of Brewery Workers Union Local 199, and was a semi-professional baseball pitcher in the Buckeye Baseball League. He was also a World War II Army Veteran.

Survivors include a sister, Louise McMahon of Newport; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Corpus Christi Church in Newport. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Wilder. Memorials may be send to the charity of donor's choice.

Wardie M. Bell, 90, of Monroe, Mich., formerly of Falmouth, died Saturday at her residence. She was a retired secretary. Her husband, Halbert Bell, and four children, Jack Bell, Halbert Bell Jr., Allen Bell and Joyce Bell, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include sisters, Florence Daugherty of Lexington and Katherine Holland of Florence; a grandchild, four great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Nettie Burris, 92, of Butler, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.

Gary Lee Bush, 54, of Alexandria, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a former parts manager for Howard Adams Toyota, part owner of In Town Cafe, Covington, and an Army veteran. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and National Sheriff's Association.

Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Nichols Bush of Alexandria; brothers, Charles Bush of Erlanger and Raymond E. Bush of Walton; and sisters, Elizabeth Matteoli and Pat Anderson, both of Independence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Rosa Case Cummins, 79, of Brooksville, died Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. She was a homemaker and a member of Willow Baptist Church, Bracken County. Her husband, Chester Cummins, died in 1996.

Survivors include sons, Steve Cummins of Lexington, Barry Cummins of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Joel Cummins of West Chester, Ohio; a brother, Stanley Case of Lakeland, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery. Edith M. Elliot, 86, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a retired teacher for the Portland, Ore., public schools and was a writer of novels and children's books. She was a member of Sequim United Methodist Church, Sequim, Wash., and Ladies Auxiliary of Elks Lodge 2642, Sequim. Her husband, Wilmer Elliot, died in 1983.

Survivors include sons, Ernest Elliot of Villa Hills, Wesley Elliot of Moberly, Mo., and Wil Elliot of Salt Lake City; a daughter, Mary Elliot of Kissimmee, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Nuuanu Cemetery, Honolulu. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky., 41042. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Jay R. "Jay Bird" Gieske, Sr., 31, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died in an automobile accident Thursday on West McMicken Avenue in Cincinnati. He was a lot attendant for Allright Parking Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Sadie Bobbie Morrow; a son, Jay Gieske Jr. of Newport; a daughter, Amanda Bradford of Covington; his father, Fred J. Gieske of St. Paul, Minn.; his mother and stepfather, Norma J. and James Hurt of Williamstown; his adopted father, Charles A. Robinson of Wilder; a brother, Scott Gieske of Williamstown; a sister, Tammy Warner of Covington; a half-brother, Corbett Hurt of Williamstown; a half-sister, Melissa Hurt of Williamstown; and grandmother, Bertha Robinson of Wilder.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Danny Ray Haney, 46, of Cynthiana, died Friday at University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington. He was self-employed and a member of Cynthiana Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Cunningham Haney; sons, Aaron Joseph Haney and Adam Jarrod Haney, both of Cynthiana; sisters, Joann Wolfe, Ruth Ann Wolfe and Patricia Carper, all of Carter County, Janet Bloomfield of Lewis County, Shirley Rohr of Ashland and Teresa Lewis of Abbeville, S.C.; and brothers, Bill Haney, Jim Haney and Bob Haney, all of Carter County.

Services will be at 8 p.m. today at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, and at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakland Kentucky Christian Church, Carter County. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, and after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Menix Cemetery, Carter County. Donald M. Hatton Sr., 43, of Covington, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday at his residence. He worked as a roofer and was an Army veteran.

Survivors include sons, Donald M. Hatton Jr. of Cincinnati and Michael Hatton of Orient, Ohio; daughters, Barbara Hatton and Donna Hatton, both of Cincinnati; brothers, Clyde Hatton Jr., John Hatton, Ronald Hatton, William Hatton and James Hatton, all of Cincinnati, and Luther Hatton of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters, Donna Hazelwood and Betty Campbell, both of Cincinnati, Dorothy French of Evansville, Ind., and Mary Hatton of Marysville, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Otto A. Neff, 72, of Hebron, died at 8:56 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired purchasing agent for the Queen City Club, Cincinnati. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, Norwood, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Loze Neff; a daughter, Caroline Shirley of Independence; sons, Ott J. Neff of Richmond, Ind., Anthony Neff of Covington and David Neff of Hebron; sisters, Sister Carolyn Louise Neff of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Sister Mary Helen Neff of Terre Haute, Ind., and Bertha Neff of Indianapolis; a brother, Anthony Neff of Denver; and seven grandchildren.

Steven R. Schwierjohann,, 38, of Erlanger, died Friday at his residence. He was a marketing agent for HealthSouth Inc., Edgewood. He was a member of the Cincinnati Recreation Commission Board for the Special Olympics and the founder and director of Northern Kentucky Wheelchair Sports, Erlanger.

Survivors include his wife, Patty Flanagan Schwierjohann of Bellevue; stepdaughters, Elizabeth Ann Peeno of Bellevue and Lydia Mary Peeno of Highland Heights; his mother, Jane Paolucci Schwierjohann of Highland Heights; his father, Raymond Schwierjohann of Richmond; a sister, Debbie Schwierjohann of Highland Heights; and brothers, David Schwierjohann of Southgate and Jeff Schwierjohann of Richmond.

Norma Sylvia Williams Seibert, 77, of Demossville, died Friday at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Wilbert Charles Seibert; sons, Wilbert Jack Seibert of Butler and Gerald Lynn Seibert of Covington; daughters, Dixie Lee Eviston of Newport, Bonnie Jane Sullivan of Demossville, Margaret Irene Williams of Butler and Ruby Ann Hoskins of Ohio; a brother, Jack D. Williams of Erlanger; sisters, Delores Juanita Blackburn of Ohio and Phyllis Eugene Haney of Texas ; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Estill Thomas, 81, of Caddo, died Saturday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Pine Grove Church, Pendleton County, where he was a trustee, and a member of Masonic Lodge 274, Foster.

Survivors include his wife, Euelta Eshman Thomas; sons, Gary Thomas and Steve Thomas, both of Falmouth; a sister, Yuelta Kingery of Norwood, Ohio; half-sisters, Jean Collins of Florida and Elsie Collins of Amelia, Ohio; a half-brother, Lester Thomas of Mt. Washington , Ohio; a stepsister, Artie Light of Amelia, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Hazel Throckmorton, 90, of Sardis, died at 12:45 p.m. Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a retired cook for the Thoroubred Grill, Mays Lick, and a member of the Methodist faith. Her husband, Elsworth Throckmorton, died in 1986.

Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Dugan of Washington , Ky.; sons, Gordon Throckmorton of Maysville and Kenneth Throckmorton of Mays Lick; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery, Mason County.

Family was first for Wayne Huff Sr.

Wayne A. Huff Sr. of Edgewood was a dedicated family man.

"His family came first," said his wife, Vickie Huff of Edgewood. "He was the best father. He loved being with his children and grandchildren."

Mr. Huff, 51, died at 11:32 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a meat cutter for Winn Dixie, Florence, and an Air Force veteran of the Vietname War.

Mr. Huff also was a member of Cherry Grove United Methodist Church, Taylor Mill Moose Lodge and Ralph Fulton VFW Post.

He enjoyed traveling and reading.

Other survivors include his wife; sons, Wayne Huff Jr. of Douglasville, Ga., and Brian Huff of Edgewood; daughters, Christine Gentry of Temple, Ga., Tammy Crawford of Florence and Jennifer Huff and Melinda Huff, both of Edgewood; a sister, Sandra Adkins of Latonia; a brother, Joseph Huff of Cincinnati; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.
