Charles J. "C. J." Rayburn, 76, of Louden, Tenn., formerly of Crittenden, died Wednesday in Knoxville, Tenn. He was a disabled brakeman with B&O Railroad and an Army veteran of World War II. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Bethany Church Cemetery, Holbrook. Elliston- Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, is handling arrangements.

John "Jack" Sapp, 79, of Maysville, died Saturday at his home. He was a salesman with E. A. Robinson Grocery, Maysville, and a past deacon and elder emeritus of First Christian Church, Maysville. He was a volunteer with R.S.V.P. and Mason County Food Bank in Maysville, and drove children to Shriners Hospital. He was a member of Maysville Odd Fellows, Maysville VFW Post, Maysville Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. He was an Army veteran of World War II. A daughter, Patsy Sapp, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Judith Sapp; a son, Jackie Sapp of Tollesboro; daughters, Saundra Adair of Maysville, Debbie Rollings of Georgetown, N.C., an Susan Schantz of Flemingsburg; his stepmother, Victoria Sapp of Maysville; brothers, Tommy Sapp of Maysville, Jimmy Sapp of Lexington, Tony Sapp of Mount Sterling and Harry Sapp of Mays Lick; sisters, Ann Brisley and Frances Bartelt, both of Amarillo, Texas , Eunice Reed of Columbus, Ohio, and Reba Schanz of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Maysville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Brell & Son Funeral Home, Maysville, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mays Lick Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, W. Third St., Maysville, Ky., 41056.

Ann Sears, 90, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Paul G. Shay, 65, of Covington, died at 10:45 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired shift manager with Bonded Oil Co., Covington, a member of First Baptist Church in Cold Spring, and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Usleman Shay; daughters, Robin Shears of Erlanger and Tracy Klette of Covington; a son, Tom W. Shay of Covington; a brother, Carl Shay of Villa Hills; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Chelsea Short, 86, of Alexandria, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Newport. Her husband, Seldon Short, died in 1988.

Survivors include a daughter, Marian Johnson of Alexandria; sons, Seldon Short Jr. of Vancleve and Kenneth Short of Elsmere; a sister, Pearl Hagan of Erlanger; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Church of the Nazarene. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Gabbard Cemetery, Lee County.

Roy B. Smith, 66, of Cincinnati, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired carpenter. His wife, Barbara Smith, died in February. A son, Boyd Smith, died in 1982.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice Barney of Florence; sisters, Hazel Barnett of Mississippi, Judy Terry of Independence, Patsy Smith of Oneida, Tenn., and Peggy Smith of Whitley City; brothers, Brent Smith, Dicky Smith and Teddy Smith, all of Kentucky.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Carrie Updike Sturgeon, 90, of Verona, died Friday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Verona. Her husband, Calvin J. Sturgeon, died in 1990.

Survivors include three grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services were this morning at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Burial was in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to New Bethel Baptist Church, 2022 Verona Mudlick Road, Verona, Ky., 41092.

Harold "Hank" F. Torrey, 61, of Bellevue, died at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a salesman and manager in medical sales and transportation, and a member of the National Rifle Association and Bass Masters. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Wilson Torrey; a daughter, Laurie Brumback of Crestview Hills; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky., 41075; St. John's United Church of Christ Pastoral Care, Park Ave. and Nelson Place, Newport, Ky., 41071; or Grace United Methodist Church, 111 E. Nancy Parker Westwood, 58, of Silver Grove, died at 9:11 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was an office manager with K-mart in Highland Heights.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Westwood of Alexandria; her father, Stanley Parker of Lancaster; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Olivenel Berling, loved animals

Olivenel Berling, better known to her friends as "Pi," had a way with God's creatures.

"She just had an incredible amount of love for everyone and everything," said Ms. Berling's daughter, Laura Crone, of Independence.

"I think she just took the love she had of people and extended that toward the animals."

Ms. Berling, 61, of Independence, died Monday at her home.

When the Campbell County Animal Shelter opened, Ms. Berling jumped at the chance to apply for a job involving animals. She spent the next 12 years carefully tending to the needs of the county's homeless animals.

"She was working as a waitress at the time, and when she heard that they had a position to be filled she told me "I want that job,' " Ms. Crone said. "She grew up on a farm, so she was used to being around animals her whole life. She just loved them."

Ms. Berling's love was even more emphatic for people. At Gathering Place Church in Florence, she spent time teaching Missionettes, which Ms. Crone describes as a "Christian Girl Scouts."

"She helped a lot of families through her work at the church. Every Wednesday, they had family night and she was always there helping out," Ms. Crone said.

Ms. Berling was also a volunteer at the Lighthouse Ministries in Cincinnati, where she helped feed homeless people a couple of days each week.

Other survivors include a son, John Charles Berling of Cincinnati; a brother, Charles Bud Kottmyer of Highland Heights; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Lighthouse Ministries, 1504 Central Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45214.

Leah Hope Applegate, 82, of Kenton, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Tom Applegate of Morning View and Don Applegate of Nicholson; a daughter, Edith Norris of Kenton; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.

William Paul Beiting, 81, of Fort Thomas, died at 1:10 p.m. Sunday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home in Fort Thomas.

He was a retired carpenter with Messer Construction Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Carpenter's Union Local No. 698, Cincinnati. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church Holy Name Society in Newport.

Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Halpin Beiting; a daughter, Marilyn Walz of Wilmette, Ill.; a son, David Beiting of Fort Thomas; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent DePaul Church. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, followed by prayers.

Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Memorials are suggested to Christian Appalachian Project, to the attention of Father Beiting, Louisa, Ky. 41230; or to St. Vincent DePaul Mission Church, 115 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Marguerite Draper, 93, of Latonia, died at 12:10 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was a retired saleswoman with Kroger Co., Covington, and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Covington. Her husband, Allen Earl Draper, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, June Damron of Covington; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

William V. Duvall Sr., 85, of Owenton, died Sunday at Owen County Memorial Hospital in Owenton.

He was a farmer, a former school board member and a member of Dallasburg Baptist Church and Owenton Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Davis Duvall; sons, David Duvall of Walton and William V. Duvall Jr. of Wheatley; a sister, Margaret McCowan of Cleveland; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Wheatley Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Dallasburg Baptist Church, Owenton, Ky. 40359.

Cecil Marie Elkin, 76, of Latonia, died at 3:30 a.m. Monday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Russell Elkin, died in 1988.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Windows of Elsmere and Wanda Williams of Florence; sisters, Audrey Catron of Crittenden and Charlotte Jones of Sun City, Calif.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
