Boone farmer W. Samuel Delph, also loved family, church, music
W. Samuel Delph was the fourth generation of his family to farm his home place on Garrison Creek in Boone County, and the example he set has been passed along to members of his family.
Mr. Delph, 84, of Burlington, died Friday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
"He's following in the footsteps of his father, and we hope to keep the farm in the family," Mr. Delph's daughter, Norma D. Hennigen of Hebron, said of her brother, Samuel.
Her father also set an example with his church attendance and love of music, his daughter said.
"He played the guitar and was a great mimic. We all sing in church, and we'll be working a lot of music into the funeral service," said Mrs. Hennigen.
Along with working the small family farm where he was born, Mr. Delph also went to a one-room school, and all his life to church near his home. "He went to the Garrison Elementary School, and he was a member of Bullittsburg Baptist Church," said Mrs. Hennigen.
In his younger days, her father also worked as a sexton at the church Cemetery, where he is to be buried, she said.
Mr. Delph grew up on the farm, and was gone for only a couple of years after his marriage before moving back, said Mrs. Hennigen. Along with farming, he held other jobs, at the Roberts Family Feed Store in Hebron, and as a ramp service agent for Delta Airlines at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
Mr. Delph was a hunter and fisherman, but again, the sports were enjoyed close to home, Mrs. Hennigen said. "He fished in the creek and in the Ohio River. He never wandered far from his home environment," she said.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife, Nettie Mae Hodges Delph; a son, Samuel Delph of Burlington; daughters Margie A. White of Burlington and Rebecca D. Moore of Dayton, Ohio; sisters, Mary Hodges of Burlington and Betty Day of Vevay, Ind.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bullittsburg Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Burial will be in Bullittsburg Baptist Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Bullittsburg Baptist Church, 2616 Bullittsburg Church Road, Burlington, Ky. 41005.
