Ralph Edwards, aided teens

Ralph Edwards of Edgewood devoted his life to family.

But his definition extended far beyond his home. Teens who had no place to go and no one to care for them could find a home at the Edwards' house, said his son, Father Ralph Edwards, of North Carolina.

"He opened up the world for me," Father Edwards said.

The elder Ralph Edwards died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington at age 69.

He had worked hard all his life, usually holding down two or three jobs at a time, his son said. "With seven children, that's what you do."

Mr. Edwards was a Navy veteran and started at Cincinnati Gas & Electric in 1950, working in the boiler room.

He took a personal interest in people. When a teen was having problems at home, he invited him home. Several became unofficial adopted sons, living with the family for years.

"We never thought it was strange to have a new face at the table," Father Edwards said.

He recalled a young man who fell from a car and suffered a brain injury. "My dad worked with him for a long time. Today you wouldn't know he'd had anything wrong," Father Edwards said.

Mr. Edwards was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and spent close to 10 years as a Boy Scout leader.

"He spent his time on his work and his family," his son said. "We were very blessed to have such a wonderful father figure."

Other survivors include his wife, Betty Edwards; daughters, Rebecca Butcher of Latonia, Theresa Lykins of California and Mary Stark of Windsor, Colo.; sons, Robert LeRoy Edwards of Independence, John Edwards of Ludlow and Richard Edwards of Cincinnati; sisters, Marcella Starts of Springfield, Ohio, and Mary Ellen Franklin of Missouri; a stepbrother, Charles McCrossen of Michigan; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45203.
