Mary Virginia Chipps, Florence floral shop owner

Mary Virginia Chipps and her husband shared a long and successful marriage.

After his retirement from the Army, they shared a successful florist shop, Chippers Flowers in Florence.

Mrs. Chipps followed her husband, Gilbert Glen Chipps, to various parts of the country during his military career. She often worked at Sears, Roebuck and Co. in Cincinnati, but she dreamed of opening a floral shop.

In the mid-1980s, Mrs. Chipps achieved her dream, and her husband helped wherever he could.

"She was an angel, and I was her gofer guy," her husband said.

Mrs. Chipps, 67, of Edgewood, died at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice, Covington. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Methodist Church in Doddridge County, W.Va.

The Chipps are from West Virginia but spent most of the past 30 years in Northern Kentucky.

"She was a very happy person. She had a lot of great friends," Mr. Chipps said.

Other survivors include a son, David A. Chipps of Cleveland; daughters, Sue Iha of Austin, Texas , and Carol Willson of Florence; brothers, Forrest Welch, Jimmy Welch and Robert Welch, all of West Virginia, and Dwayne Welch and Johnny Welch, both of North Carolina; a sister, Debbie Gaskins of West Virginia; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Harbert Funeral Home, Salem, W.Va. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. today at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, and from 11 a.m. until time of services Sunday at the funeral home in West Virginia. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery, Salem, W.Va.

Sherry Smith Ashby, 50, of Tempe, Ariz., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Wednesday at University Hospital, Tucson, Ariz. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Bob Ashby, died in 1995. Survivors include a daughter, Sommer Ashby of Phoenix; brothers, Steve Smith of Fort Wright, Scott Smith of Atlanta and Spencer Smith of Oviedo, Fla.; sisters, Saundra Strunk of Fort Mitchell, Sheila Vogelsang of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Sheena Reamer of Kansas City, Kan.

Graveside services and burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere-Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Ava Louellen Losey Bradford, 82, of Butler, died Thursday at River Valley Nursing Home in Butler. She was a retired nurse's aide for the nursing home and a member of Butler Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Garry Losey of Butler; daughters, Donna McLaren of Grants Lick and Gloria Brown of Reading, Ohio; a sister, Grace Dells of North Carolina; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick, with visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.

Fred Brown, 77, of California, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was retired from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Survivors include his wife, Cora Brown; sons, Fred G. Brown of Demossville and John A. Brown of Burlington; daughters, Donna Sue Stiens of Independence, Patricia Morris of California, Pamela Ely of Bennington, Ind., and Debora Holliday of Burlington; sisters, Catherine Redman of Morning View, Mardella Perry of San Diego; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Monday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

James R. Buckner, 57, of Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Falmouth, died Saturday at his home. He was a meat cutter for Sam's Club, Tampa, Fla.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Sue Buckner; a daughter, Laurie Blevins of Independence; a stepdaughter, Lisa Lyon of Falmouth; a stepson, Roger Hammond of Falmouth; a brother, Joseph Buckner of Butler; a sister, Clara Grant of Cincinnati; three grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 30 at Flour Creek Christian Church, Butler. Meadowlawn Funeral Home, New Port Richey, Fla., is handling arrangements.

Helen M. Talbert Cline of Villa Hills died Thursday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Cline; sisters, Rita Pope of Crescent Springs, Vera Weber of Florence and Rose Siemer of Fort Mitchell; a brother, Paul Talbert of Fort Wright.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph School, 2470 Lorraine Court, Crescent Springs, Ky. 41017-1406.

Mary Litha Craddock, 67, of Williamstown, died Wednesday at Grant Manor Health Care Center in Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of Grassy Creek Christian Church, Demossville. Her husband, Robert Craddock, died in 1992.

Survivors include a son, Rick Craddock of Demossville; a brother, Ed Jones Jr. of Florence; a sister, Frances McManama of Florence; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at noon today at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Grassy Creek Christian Church, Highway 17, Demossville, Ky. 41033.

James A. Foust, 46, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. Survivors include his mother, Margaret Foust of Fort Mitchell; a brother, Brian Foust of Lexington; and sisters, Marsha Weaver and Francis Carlin, both of Fort Mitchell, Judy Johnson of Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y., and Marjie Ratliff of Vinton, Va.

N.S. "Nick" Furnish, 79, of Hebron, died at 1:46 p.m. Thursday at his home. He was a retired supervisor for American Airlines and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Bullittsville Christian Church, Burlington, where he was an elder emeritus, deacon and controller. He was treasurer of Hebron Fire District and Hebron Fire Department and a member of Hebron Lions Club and American Airlines Vanguard Society.

Survivors include his wife, Emily Winchester Furnish of Hebron; daughters, Barbara Sanders of Austin, Texas , and Bev Furnish Humphrey of Park Hills; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bullittsville Christian Church, Burlington. Visitation will be 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery. Diane R. Grady, 52, of Florence, died Friday at Hospice of Cincinnati in Blue Ash, Ohio. She was a retired deputy sheriff for the Richland County, Ohio, Sheriff's Department. She was a member of First Church of Christ, Burlington.

Survivors include her husband, William Grady; a son, Shawn Grady of Florence; a stepmother, Pauline Eichelberger of Bucyrus, Ohio; a sister, Marcia Baker of Bucyrus, Ohio; a brother, Larry Eichelberger of Bucyrus, Ohio; a half-sister, Kathleen Dishon of Bucyrus, Ohio.

Edith Lillian Hammons, 59, of Taylor Mill, died Friday at Bethesda North Hospital, Montgomery, Ohio. She was a finisher for Contemporary Cabinets, Cincinnati, and a member of Faith Baptist Church, Latonia.

Hammons; a daughter, Sandra Wagner of Taylor Mill; her mother, Dora Alcorn of Bedford, Ind.; brothers, Buford Alcorn of Bedford, Ind., Darrell Alcorn of Sweetwater, Tenn., and Steve McQueen of Ringo, Ga.; sisters, Helen Gay of Bedford, Ind., Arnold Mae Pearson of Berea and Mary Woodson of Lebanon, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Bertha Uhl Higdon, 91, of Fort Mitchell, died Thursday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, George Higdon, died in 1972. A son, David Higdon, died in 1955. Survivors include daughters, Carol Roberto, Judy Egan, Melanie Boylan and Nancy Stautberg of Cincinnati, and Joan Hegge of Fort Mitchell; 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell, with visitation from 5 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Kimberly Lynn Nunlist, 28, of Bakersfield, Calif., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Aug. 13 at her home from complications of asthma. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Bradford H. Piner; daughters, Jo Ann Shiveley of Williamsburg, Ohio, and Betty Owen of Alexandria; a son, Bradford L. Piner of Missouri City, Texas ; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Loraine L. Rhein, 78, of Bellevue, died at 12:40 p.m. Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert Rhein, died in 1992. A son, James Rhein, died in 1997.

Lawrence John Rohling, 85, of Alexandria, died Thursday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. He was a retired jeweler for Gordon B. Miller Co., Cincinnati, a member of Corpus Christi Church, Newport, and also attended St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. He was a charter member of Kenton Fish and Game Club.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Hall Rohling; sons, James Rohling of Morning View and Richard Rohling of Fort Wright; daughters, Barbara Sayers of Covington and Kathy Cioffi of Crescent Springs; stepsons, James Hull and Daniel Hull of Alexandria and Nicholas Hull of Tennessee; a sister, Ruth Marshall of Taylor Mill; 27 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren.
