Sherry Smith Ashby, 50, of Tempe, Ariz., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Wednesday at University Hospital, Tucson, Ariz. She was a paramedic. A son, Brian Ashby, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Sommer Ashby of Phoenix; her mother, Eleanor Smith of St. Louis; brothers, Steve Smith of Fort Wright, Scott Smith of Atlanta and Spencer Smith of Oviedo, Fla.; sisters, Saundra Strunk of Fort Mitchell, Sheila Vogelsang of Fort Wright and Sheena Reamer of Kansas City, Mo.; and her fiancee, Col. Nelson Seagren, of Germany.

Graveside services were Monday at Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, handled arrangements.

William E. Black, 72, of Walton, died June 10 at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a sister, Sarah Petri of Batavia, Ohio.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Newtown, Ohio, Cemetery. Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.

Winnifred Blackburn, 86, of Worthville, died Monday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton. She was a homemaker and a member of Perry Park Methodist Church. Her husband, Charles Blackburn, and a son, Norman Blackburn, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Wanda Arnold of Owenton and Janice Craig of Carrollton; sisters, Louise Jones of Louisville, Frances Jackson of Covington and Joyce Perkins of Owenton; six granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street location, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Port Royal Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Residents Council Fund, Owen County Memorial Hospital, 330 Roland Ave., Owenton, Ky. 40359.

Hallie Mae Castleman, 82, of Cincinnati, formerly of Falmouth, died Sunday at Christian Care Nursing Home in Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church, Covington.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Taylor of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Crescent Hills Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Paul L. Gerde, 68, of Covington, died at 9:45 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was a retired electrician with Cooper Industries and an Army veteran.

Survivors include brothers, Bernard Gerde of Covington and Richard Gerde of Cincinnati; and sisters, Marilyn Moss of Erlanger and Ruth Stottlebower of Covington.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Augustine Church, Covington. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Erlanger. Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Edna Judd, 90, of Florence, died at 7:36 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Sister Delores Jane Kinnett, O.S.B., 69, of Villa Hills, died Monday at St. Walburg Monastery Infirmary in Villa Hills. Sister Kinnett took her final vows in 1958, and has served the internal needs of the monastery.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 5 p.m. Friday at St. Walburg Monastery Chapel in Villa Hills. A vigil service will be there at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Walburg Cemetery, Villa Hills. Memorials are suggested to the monastery, 2500 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky. 41017.

Edna Koch, 82, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday in Naples, Fla. She was the owner of Edna's Beauty Shop in Fort Thomas, and was a beautician since 1936. Her husband, Robert C. Koch Sr., died in 1992.

Survivors include sons, Robert C. Koch Jr. and Nicholas W. Koch, both of Naples, Fla.; sisters, Marcella Kelly of Fort Thomas, Ruby Bentle, Wanda Harper, Bonnie Kavanaugh and Sue Browning, all of Falmouth; a brother, Berry "Sonny" Wilson Jr. of Dry Ridge; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church of Naples, 1789 Mandarin Road, Naples, Fla. 34102.

Earl Robinson Jr., 69, of Jeffersonville, Ind., formerly of Worthville, died Monday at his home. He was a retired self-employed landscaper and an Army and Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Nancy Robinson, died in 1993.

Survivors include sons, Darrel Robinson and David Robinson, both of Jeffersonville, Ind.; stepsons, James E. Scudder of Berry and Thomas H. Scudder of Florence; stepdaughters, Patricia L. DelRio and Carol A. Scudder, both of Berry, Charlotte R. Martin of Covington and Sharon S. Phelps of Florence; a brother, Jerry L. Robinson of Union; sisters, Mary Deitsch of Union, Barbara Harrell and Carol Harmon, both of Florence, and Lena Kinman of Covington; 29 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Worthville Cemetery.

Glenn O. "Pee Wee" Stroop Sr., 70, of Petersburg, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Survivors include sons, Glenn O. Stroop Jr. of Lynchburg, Ohio, and Bobby Stroop of Hillsboro, Ohio; a daughter, Sue Thompson of Hillsboro; a brother, Jim Stroop of Hillsboro; nine grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren.

William Lee Tobergte, 55, of Florence, died Tuesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was owner of WLT Heating and Cooling, and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Eilers Tobergte; a daughter, Kerstina Hume of Florence; a son, Kevin Tobergte of Independence; his mother, Mabel Daniel of Ludlow; sisters, Diane Daniel of Newport, Ella Mae Gray of West Covington and Anne Marie McCallister of Cincinnati; brothers, Frank Tobergte of Ludlow, Lawrence Tobergte of Crittenden, Richard Tobergte of Cincinnati and Robert Tobergte of Erlanger; and four grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Church. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Mary J. Tupman, 81, of Somerville, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Sunday at Woodland Country Manor in Somerville.

Elmer Wirth, loved family, dancing, VFW

Elmer M. Wirth, a long-time Ludlow resident and father of 10, died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday at his residence. He was 79.

Mr. Wirth grew up in Cincinnati and went to Western Hills High School. When he was 23, he went into the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific.

He spent about three years in the service and received two bronze stars.

After he returned from the war, Mr. Wirth married his wife, Florence Niemer Wirth.

"He was very friendly and sociable," said a daughter, Margaret Huff of Hebron. "Everyone knew and liked him.

"He was a master euchre player. He loved swing music, and he was a great dancer."

Mr. Wirth raised his large family in Ludlow, supporting his wife and 10 children as a truck driver for City Haul Trucking Co. in Cincinnati for about 30 years.

He retired when he was 62. His wife died several years later, in 1986.

After retirement, Mr. Wirth moved to Panorama Apartments, a retirement community in Covington.

There he met Betty Bodkin, a dear friend and companion for the last 10 years of his life.

Together, they went to horse races and were active in senior-citizens groups and organizations. He died content and happy at his residence, his daughter said.

"He lived and died the way we all would like to," she said. "He lived a good life and was a nice man, and he died with dignity."

Mr. Wirth was a member of Ludlow World War II Veterans, Bromley World War II Veterans, Kelly Furnish VFW Post No. 7099 in Covington and Ludlow Senior Citizens.

Other survivors include sons, Stevan Wirth of Burlington, Marty Wirth of Florence, Gary Wirth of Latonia, Thomas Wirth of Union, Michael Wirth of Erlanger, and James Wirth and Vincent Wirth, both of Ludlow; daughters, Rita Gorley of Bradenton, Fla., and Mary Clark of Covington; a sister, Deloras Wirth of Cincinnati; 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with veterans' memorial services at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Bessie Bartel, 83, of Fort Mitchell, died Saturday at Cedar Village nursing home in Mason, Ohio. She was a retired cashier. Her husband, Jake Bartel, died in 1995. Survivors include a son, Bruce Bartel of Roselle, Ill.; a sister, Mollie Nunlist of Shafter, Calif.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services were held Monday at Golf Manor Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042. Weil Funeral Home, Cincinnati, handled arrangements.

Harold Lee Beckham, 73, of Williamstown, died at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
