Bellevue's Thomas Routledge, longtime First Baptist chorister

Thomas W. Routledge, a member of the choir at First Baptist Church in Bellevue for more than 50 years, died at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at his home. He was 72.

The devoted husband and father of two considered his church part of his family. He met his wife at First Baptist as a young man and attended regularly until his death.

He served as a deacon for many years and chaired a committee to get the church a new building in Bellevue.

"His faith was very strong. When your faith is that strong, then your faith becomes part of your family, too," said a daughter, Ann Bailey of Richmond, Ky.

Mr. Routledge, a life-long Bellevue resident, graduated from Bellevue High School. He went on to enroll in the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., during World War II, but was discharged from the Navy shortly after he graduated because of an illness.

He married his wife, Eleanor, in 1948, and they had two children. He supported his family as an engineer with Southern Ohio Fabrication, where he designed and installed overhead cranes. He worked for the company for 48 years.

Mrs. Routledge died in 1990. Today would have been the couple's 50th wedding anniversary, Ms. Bailey said.

"We believe that they're together now," she said.

"He was very, very devoted to his church and to his family. His family was everything to him."

Other survivors include daughter Beth West of Highland Heights; a sister, Barbara Stacy of Malvern, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Bellevue, 254 Washington St., Bellevue, Ky. 41073.
